POSTED ON FRIENDS OF BIG BEND FACEBOOK PAGE – 3/16/2020
“Effective Tuesday March 17, 2020 until further notice:
-All Big Bend visitor centers will be closed including Big Bend Natural History Association bookstores
-Entrance stations will be closed
-All formal interpretive programming and special events scheduled for the next 60 days will be cancelled
-The Boquillas Port of Entry will be closed effective March 18, 2020
-Camping permits will be impacted - group campsites will be closed when current parties vacate
-Backcountry camping will be restricted to those sites available for advance reservation onrecreation.gov
-All activities will be restricted to the CDC's guidelines of 10 persons or less including guides
-The hotel will remain open, the bar will be closed, the salad bar will be closed. The restaurant will attempt to maximize takeout meals
-Restaurant and patio capacity will be restricted and tables spread out to maximize distance between diners, patio dining will continue through April unless there are negative trash or animal impacts.
-The RV campground at Rio Grande Village will remain open.
Please note that park staff realize these are significant changes to daily operations and will negatively impact the business of many park partners, concessioners and area businesses. Park staff feel strongly that these restrictions are in line with CDC's guidance. They will work to keep the park open so that visitors can enjoy the open, solitary spaces. But they will keep both visitor and employee safety at top of mind.
Full details will be released by Big Bend National Park staff tomorrow[Ed. Note: 3/17/2020], this briefer has been shared with the permission of the superintendent. We will post any information from the park here as soon as it is received. Thank you for your patience as we all work through these challenging times.”

While you are out enjoying the beauty of @bigbendnps and @bigbendranchsp please remember to make sure and bring everything that comes into the parks with you also leaves the parks with you. Remember one of the Park Service’s most important rules, “pack it in, pack it out.” Keep it pristine for future generations to come and experience!

To date, the West Texas VA Health Care System has not encountered anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19. The facility is following CDC guidelines for intake precautions. One aspect of those precautions is social distancing. As part of our efforts to keep our Veterans, staff and community healthy, we will be conducting meetings via teleconference where ever possible. Background: While the Centers for Disease Control still considers COVID-19 to be a low threat to the general American public, the West Texas VA Health Care System is paying special attention to it. As part of this process, everyone who enters the campus will be pre-screened. This may lengthen entry times, so patients are advised to allow for that when arriving for their appointments.
The screening consists of three questions:
Do you have a fever or worsening cough or shortness of breath or flu-like symptoms?
Have you or a close contact traveled to an area with widespread or sustained community transmission of COVID-19 within 14 days of symptom onset?
Have you been in close contact with someone, including health care workers, confirmed to have COVID-19?
Per CDC guidance and VA protocols, individuals known to be at risk for a COVID-19 infection are immediately isolated to prevent potential spread to others.
· Veterans and staff are encouraged to take everyday preventive actions to avoid being exposed to the virus:
· Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
· Stay home if you are sick or becoming sick.
· Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
· If you have symptoms or have been exposed to someone with symptoms, call the VA before going to the facility.
More information for Veterans is here: https://www.blogs.va.gov/VAntage/72615/vas-recommendations-help-slow-covid-19-virus/ For more information about the Coronavirus, please visit: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.
