Terlingua Moon
Volume 32, No. 30
July 27, 2021 by FreeBird

        "Beam me up, Scotty!"
 – Capt. James T. Kirk

Did you know – there are three species of Agave in Big Bend?  The Agave havardiana, (often called a Century Plant) pictured above is the off-spring of a plant rescued from the yard of someone who wanted it to be removed nearly 30 years ago.  The parent plant bloomed July, 2013.  Life often moves slowly in the desert.  The second species of Agave is the indicator plant of our Chihuahuan Desert, the Agave lecheguilla, commonly referred to as lechuguilla.  The third species is actually a hybrid of the first two species, the Agave gracilipes.  It looks like a large lechuguilla or a small century plant.  I don’t know how old this Scott’s Oriole is, but I know he loves to sit high on this Agave and sing his beautiful song.

Dear Board Members:

My name is Dave Byrne and I am a resident of BJ's RV Park for almost four years.  I am 75 years old and seriously handicapped walking only by using a walker.  There are other full time residents of this park as well, including children and infants.

Recently, a pressure reducer was not reinstalled as it should have been causing RV hookup sites to have water leaks.  These leaks were not discovered until after some time had passed because there are no guests here during the summer months.

I feel that the leaks were the fault of the work crews for Study Butte Water and that the company bares responsibility for them and that BJ's is not negligent with regard to the leaks.  I feel that the Water Company and BJ's should work towards a reasonable solution that would keep the water on as it would be a serious detriment to my life as it would be to others if water was not available.

Thank you for your consideration,

Dave Byrne"

NON-PROFIT FUNDING
As you know, we await the publication of the EDA NOFO for the funds allocated to EDA under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARP). We have had many individual and Zoom calls on the opportunity, but I send this to offer to attend a webinar on EDA programs for economic adjustment and the application process as well as a “walk-through” of the process of finding the NOFO on the EDA website and finding the appropriate application forms.

Our rural EDA representative, Robert Peche, has offered to make a presentation to our communities at the two times below.  Hoping one of these options will be convenient and that the information will be helpful.

Big Bend National Park

The Texas National Guard will return to Big Bend National Park to offer another round of Covid-19 vaccines and tests. The Guard will be at Panther Junction Visitor Center on Saturday, July 10 from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. If you got your first of either of the two dose vaccines here a month ago, this is your opportunity for your second dose. If you want a Covid or antibody test they will also have those available.

They will be offering the same services at the Terlingua Fire & EMS  building on July 11.

Even if you don't need a vaccine or a test, stop by and thank the guardsmen. It took quite an effort to bring them out to our rural, isolated area. We are very grateful to the team and their captain for their efforts to keep us all safe.
