Caroline Gore

Caroline Gore, a desert soul to the core, passed recently from this one to next. More than thirty years in the Terlingua neighborhood, she always had one foot, and her spirit, on both sides of the border. Born on Cinco de Mayo in 1937 in Frederick, OK, she spent several solo years in San Miguel de Allende, MX after raising her family, before adopting the Big Bend and embarking on painstakingly building her traditional adobe house “El Capricho” in the early 90’s. She could be found at most any social and benefit function, as her love for the neighborhood and its denizens was boundless. She did though escape for a bit every summer to Gunnison, CO, to delight in the mix of ages (and temperatures) at the family compound there. Her fierce independence was balanced by a self deprecating perspective, her love of place and of people, particularly the less privileged, are examples to us all. Lives are more than touched by those that inspire. Thank you for sharing yours. May your tanks be eternally full.

A spreading of ashes by family and whomever wishes to attend will occur sometime in April. In the meantime, thoughts and reminiscences are being collected for the family. We all know how few of our family and friends understand the call of a place like this, and just how much of it is in the people who it calls. Consider tossing a few words to toddbureau@gmail.com, and we’ll let her family know to what degree that’s the case for a very special case.
