 THE TERLINGUA MOON

Vol. 32 No. 34      August 24, 2021       By MaeWestern

"It ain't the heat, it's the humility." -- Yogi Berra

Bud Strandlund

Bud Strandlund, a 30 year resident of Terlingua, passed away on August 9th, after suffering a heart attack. He was 88 years old. Bud was from Minnesota and first visited Big Bend in the early 1960’s. He moved to Terlingua permanently in 1991 after retiring from his own refrigeration company and to escape Minnesota winters.  He worked for Sul Ross for 5 years in their maintenance division, and traveled to work in Saudi Arabia and Russia. Bud was an active member of the local Baptist Church and did years of mission work in Mexico with them. He was the kind of person who would help anyone, anytime. He once drove a mother and child from Terlingua to Iowa to be reunited with her family, even though he’d never met her before! He will be missed by all his family and friends. According to his wishes there will not be a memorial, but please feel free to visit the bench in the cemetery he built for his long time Terlingua partner Mozelle, and wish them both Travelin’ Mercies.

Yoga at the Cactus Farm for the Burros!

Come yoga for a good cause and help the burros! Introducing Kate Healy who has been jumping around and calling it Yoga for 42 years. She started out watching “Yoga with Lilias” on Channel 12 and ended up traveling the world to study with some of the world’s most revered teachers. It’s been one kickass ride, when all you really hoped for was to wear the red leotard and look as good as Lilias.

No Instagram star, yet a daredevil at heart, Kate knows enough moves to help you spread your yoga wings. She has also been a massage therapist for 27 years and knows her way around things that hurt. It brings her a lot of joy to see you start kickin around again, feeling happy in your body, high on the good stuff that deep breathing gives.

Join Kate Healy Dykes for some lively down-home Yyoga @ the Cactus Farm. Expand your aura, shrink your girth, have fun laughing with yourself. Do it for the wild burros who deserve some land of their own.

Terlingua Recycles

Well, here it is August of 2021. For the past three months I have been working at the park mainly in the recycle center as they are very shorthanded. We were discussing starting to reopen the trailer in Terlingua. Since I’m working at the center now they will allow us to start coming back in the near future.

What I’m hoping is to start back on a limited basis in October. This depends on getting more help. Dave Byrne has offered to come back but we need a bit more help.

One condition on coming back is that we have to continue the sorting of the product like we started a few years ago. So only clean products go there and no sorting is required. Sorting is a time consuming and tedious job. And can be quite dirty at times.

Alpine Art Show!

Former Terlingua resident Mary Diesel is the featured artist at Gallery on the Square through August. Her window display, titled "Un Poco de Todo en Gouache," is a collection of 20 small paintings she created using only three primary gouache colors: cyan, magenta and yellow, plus black and white. Diesel is a regular member of the gallery, which is the retail outlet for the Big Bend Arts Council. Works in the display may also be viewed and purchased through her website: www.marydiesel.com

MORE ART at Earth and Fire Gallery!
Earth and Fire Gallery in the Ghostown of Terlingua, Texas is a most magical space.  Nestled into a stacked rock structure located between the Starlight Theater and Y Poco Mas Coffee Shop, this unique space is home to artists who capture and share the essence of what both sides of the Big Bend are all about.  Featuring mixed media, pointilism, photography, metal work, pottery and more - by local artists - you will find exactly the piece you want to take home with you. Constantly changing, repeat visits are a must!
