BOB AND BARBARA WALES lived in Terlingua for a number of years. She was librarian at the school, and he was active in civic affairs. From his daughter Cecy Wales:
RIP Bob Wales August 24, 1940-January 17, 2017 (January 18 in Japan)
It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to my wonderful father. He was a kind, loving, fun man, always there to support his family and loved ones. He enjoyed his early career as a top disc jockey at KSBK/JORO Radio on Okinawa, and then his later career as an attorney in El Paso, Texas. He enjoyed life and making people laugh, loved his wife Barbara and his kids and family, loved American football and the Dallas Cowboys, and loved Hawaii. I am so grateful that Martin and I had precious time together with him and Barbara this past Christmas and New Year. After having a rough couple of years with various health issues, he is now at peace and with God. We will love and miss him forever. Thank you for being my wonderful daddy.

TEAM 11720
The Big Bend High School Purobots traveled to El Paso, TX, for a First Robotics Competition.  The Purobots are proud to announce that they earned a 4th place finish out of 17 teams, setting the tone for a new year.  In February, the Purobots will be attending the championship competition at UTEP. Team 11720 would like to thank their sponsors: Cottonwood Store, Rio Bravo, Sullivan Construction, Terlingua Ranch, the Jordan and Casey Reed family, and Lajitas Golf Resort for helping us reach our goals.
A free “YOUR HEART, YOUR LIFE” community health education series is being hosted by the Big Bend Valley Volunteer Fire Department (BBVVFD) at 5:00pm every Wednesday from January 11th through March 22nd 2017. The BBVVFD Fire Hall is located just east of Jackass Flats off Texas Highway 118 at 321 Legion Road.  For more information email info@bigbendvalleyvfd.org, logon to http://bbvvfd.us, or call Ember at 432-371-2080.

BEAR
Is a two year old lab/border collie mix with a gorgeous coat and plumey tail. He needs to be desensitized to a leash. He is approaching his 3rd month in the shelter and is looking for a special someone who will help him learn that he doesn’t need to be so scared. Leash-phobia aside, Bear is a friendly, fun-loving dog who loves to run, play and be with other dogs. He weighs ~40 pounds and appears housebroken. He was surrendered to the shelter as an outside dog. He either has had bad leash experiences or simply was never taken on a proper walk. Bear’s adoption fee includes consultation with a trainer about positive desensitization technique. For more information about Bear, or any dog in the Alpine Animal Shelter, please email heatherthemule@gmail.com

Please share with anyone you think may want to come who may not have access to the Moon.

Come one, come all to the 3rd Annual Eyeball Student Art Show and Competition! A reception will be held on Thursday, February 2 from 4 - 5:30 pm at the Big Bend Library at the Terlingua School.  Feast your eyes on the creativity of our local youth, and share some tasty refreshments as well. ATTENTION COMMUNITY!!! Obviously the population is back and we're experiencing high traffic at the Terlingua Recycling Center (just behind Terlingua EMS). We appreciate all the effort going to recycling - it's why we're here in the first place!  However, please make sure that the Recycling Center guidelines are followed as far as what we can take, where it needs to be placed, etc. Please crush (by foot if need be) any large plastic containers to allow for more space. A reminder that we can't accept any form of styrofoam (even if it says recyclable on the back i.e. meat packaging, etc.). The cardboard is a bit overwhelming so we've brought another trailer that will hold cardboard only. There will, however, be a few bags in the front of the new cardboard trailer for overfill of cans.  We try to do a good job of going by there regularly to tidy up and sort what we can in advance but if you ever notice that things need attention, please send us a message here.  Info out soon about our next drive into the BBNP's Recycling Center to sort and clear our bins. Please pass this along and thank you GREEN TEAM!

The Terlingua Common School District will hold a public hearing and a regular Board Meeting at the Big Bend High School Meeting Room in Terlingua, TX on January 25, 2017 at 6:00PM. The purpose of the hearing is to discuss the school district’s Texas Academic Performance Report for the 2015-2016 school year. Public participation in the discussion is invited. The report can be accessed on the TEA website at:  https://rptsvr1.tea.texas.gov/perfreport/tapr/index.html

Congratulations to the teachers, administrators, and staff of the Terlingua Common School District.   A check of the State's web site 2015-16 Texas Academic Performance Report shows the TCSD "met requirements" for the accountability rating and "meets requirements" for the Special Education Determination Status.  A review of the details in the report shows that the district exceeded the state and district averages on most criteria.  Kudos to the teachers and staff that worked so hard to make this happen.  Terlingua - be proud! - Paul Glaves

Silence, meditation and an ancient teaching will be the order of the day on Saturday, 21, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at St. James Episcopal Church. All are welcome. The day begins with a continental breakfast followed by a teaching and practice of lectio divina. Lectio divina is an ancient way of reading the scriptures (or any other sacred text) and taking it in through the heart rather than the mind. There will also be two periods of Centering Prayer (a Christian method of meditation), as well as personal time for silence and solitude.
There is no fee, but donations are welcome. St. James is located at 510 N. 6th St at Ave A in Alpine. For more information, contact Pam Cook at 432-386-5988 or pscook.herenow@gmail.com

Word on the street is that the Big Bend Chamber of Commerce is in need of new leadership.  Seasoned web marketing technologist and Terlingua newcomer Tim Shirley says he has the background and bandwidth to build a better chamber, and that he's willing and able to shoulder the responsibility.  He can be reached at 432-360-4144, email bdaddy@wlweb.us or online at http://WLWeb.US."

Dodge is still at the shelter! He is a 4-year-old gorgeous german shepherd/pit bull mix who came into the shelter on 9/9/16. He comes when called (to his given name of “Dog” which we thought needed an upgrade) and really loves human affection. Dodge was surrendered due to a family crisis and likely was an only dog who lived in a yard. Dodge is friendly with all people and with some other dogs, but we recommend that he be an only dog - we think he’d prefer it and he has shown some selective behavior. Dodge walks well on a leash, appears housebroken, and longs for a permanent human connection.  He is a medium energy dog and weighs about 70 pounds. He’s desperate to be out of the shelter! For more information about Dodge, or any dog in the Alpine Animal Shelter, please email heatherthemule@gmail.com

FULL WOLF MOON POT LUCK JAN 12     6:00 PM @ Terrymar Pavilion Jackass Flats. Please join us for great food, Music, Visiting and Fun!!! Weather permitting our own neighborhood Peter Hostella will be bringing us tunes for listening and dancing through the evening. Traditionally, the January Moon is also known as the Old Moon.  To some Native American tribes, this was the Snow Moon, but most applied that name to the next Full Moon, in February. Also this month, you’ll be able to see Venus shining brightly in Aquarius, high in the west at nightfall. ENJOY!!

TERLINGUA MOON
Vol 28.  No. 1
January 3 , 2017

Those are the same stars, and that is the same moon, that look down upon your brothers and sisters,

- Sojourner Truth

Truth is powerful and it prevails.  - Sojourner Truth

This week´s issue by    Terlingua Thinking Team! (That´s what I thought!)

27th Annual Black-eyed Pea Off! The new year dawned with a gorgeous day for the Pea Off!!!  There was a record 41 entrees this year. 3rd place went to the three Ivey Brothers; 2nd place went to Johnny Holland and his cooking mate Renate; 1st place and trophy went to a man who has now won the event five times, Robert Hill.  He promises his mantel can hold no more trophies, and will help us judge next year (he obviously knows good peas!) A huge thank you to Mike Marks and friends (the Rafters) for an afternoon of rocking music.

And the CAKES!  Thank you India Wilson, Cindy Burns, Maria Blosser for helping with that. The other play, a comedy, is Bridges…Are When You Cross
Them by Melvin Shaffer. “We will soon be announcing the casts for the two shows,” says Director Miller. “We are still working things out, and some things may change,” he says. Last Minute Low Budget Productions is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) community theater group that began putting on plays in the Terlingua area in 1989. The all-volunteer cast and crew hail from the area. All tax-exempt donations are much appreciated. Contact: Sarah Bourbon 432-386- 3178.

The calendar re-order is here and you can still get your copy at venues around town: The Cottonwood, Earth & Fire Gallery, Chile Pepper and Quilts, Etc. There may be a few left at other venues. When these fine specimens of local art are gone, that's it until 2018. Happy New Year from Terlingua Visual Arts!

CHAI NEEDS YOUR LOVE! Take one look into those eyes and prepare to fall in love! Chai was picked up as a stray on November 14th. She was a small dog all alone on Alpine’s streets. It only takes a few minutes to love her for who she is. Chai is a three-year old, female Chihuahua mix. She likes other dogs, cuddles and to wear her sweaters. Chai is more than ready to fall into a cushy life, and will thrive in a loving home. For more information about Chai, or any dog at the Alpine Animal Shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com
