Terlingua Word–Off 2022

We are sad to announce that the in-person 2022 Word-Off has once again been put on hold.

We will however, throughout February, be hosting a month-long, online Facebook page for folks to post recorded contributions, new and old.

To honor and remember our friend, Pablo Menudo, the theme for this year’s contributions is

 “Elephant Dreams”.

As always, this is a jumping off point for tall tales, poetry and other original contributions. If you have something you want to contribute that is inspired by, kinda comes close or has absolutely nothing to do with the theme, we would love for you to post it on our Terlingua Word-Off 2022 Facebook page which will be officially open on Groundhog Day, that’s the 2nd of February.

Terlingua MOON

January 18, 2022

Vol.33   No. 3

by Million sMiles

“It is a pity indeed to travel and not get this essential sense of landscape values. You do not need a sixth sense for it. It is there if you just close your eyes and breathe softly through your nose; you will hear the whispered message, for all landscapes ask the same question in the same whisper. 'I am watching you -- are you watching yourself in me?' Most travelers hurry too much...the great thing is to try and travel with the eyes of the spirit wide open, and not too much factual information. To tune in, without reverence, idly -- but with real inward attention. It is to be had for the feeling...you can extract the essence of a place once you know how. If you just get as still as a needle, you'll be there.”

Lawrence Durrell, Spirit of Place: Mediterranean Writings edited by A.G.Thomas

Editor Note – the beautiful Verdin photographed in my hands was the victim of flying into glass.  Unfortunately, when you build a house with a lot of glass, birds will invariably fly into it.  When I heard that heart-breaking thump of bird hitting glass, I went out and found this little creature unconscious on the ground.  After a couple of minutes in my hands, it re-oriented, flew up on my head, then off to a perch on the porch before flying away.  Happy ending!
