EARLY VOTING—ONLY ONE AFTERNOON IN SOUTH BREWSTER COUNTY!

The County Clerk’s Office said that turnout in South Brewster was not high enough to warrant two days of Early Voting….. When asked if she had actually been following the election, she replied, “Oh, yes, ma’m….”

Big Bend Chamber of Commerce Children's Halloween Party October 29 from 2 to 6 pm in the Big Bend Motor Inn Conference Room. Games! Prizes! Treats, refreshments. Come in Costume.

Early voting in the Terlingua school board election will be going on this week and next at the J.W. "Red" Pattillo community center. Early voting hours are 3 pm to 6 pm Monday-Wednesday and Friday and 3 pm to 7 pm Thursday both weeks. There are three candidates for two positions: Travis Jenks, Sharon Hansen Clark, and Scott Watkins. At an election at which more than one board member position is to be filled, all positions that are to be filled at the election shall be voted on as one race by all voters of a district.  Each voter is entitled to cast the number of votes equal to the number of positions to be filled at the election. A voter may cast one or more of the specified number of votes for any one or more candidates in any combination.  Only whole votes may be cast and counted.  If a voter casts more than the number of votes to which the voter is entitled in the election, none of the voter’s votes may be counted in that election.  If a voter casts fewer votes than entitled, all of the voter’s votes are counted in that election. The candidates who are elected are those receiving the highest number of votes.

Sailing Away
Derek Ammons passed away on October 20 in Marion SC of kidney cancer. He had just turned 56, born 9/13/60. He was with his family and long time friend June Rapp. Though he relocated to South Carolina to live on his sail boat he still visited and loved the Big Bend. Derek was a river guide for Far Flung Adventures both in the Big Bend and Salt River Canyon Arizona. He was a Wildland Firefighter for the NPS and US Forest Service and was among the first crew members to work with the now famous Diablos. He was one of the founding members of the secret society in Terlingua known as the Deep Fat Club, but most of all he was a man of a big heart, the kind of man who wades into a flooding river to save a kitten in a tree and be a secret Santa to needy children. Derek will always be loved and his memory cherished. There will be a memorial service next year when his family comes to visit but in the meantime condolences may be sent to his family via his mother Jerrie Ammons, 310 Northside Ave. Marion SC, 29571

The Terlingua Moon
October 18, 2016 ~ VOL. 27 #41
terlinguamoon@gmail.com

“When the last tree is cut, the last fish is caught, and the last river is polluted; when to breathe the air is sickening, you will realize, too late, that wealth is not in bank accounts and that you can’t eat money.” ~ Alanis Obomsawin

by Patchouli Gulch Gal

LET’S GIVE BLAIR A SELL OUT CROWD
The memorial service for Blair Pittman will be at 10:30 Sat. A.M., Oct. 22. There will be a Eucharist for any and all; old-favorite hymns (Amazing Grace, etc.) a light lunch following, in the church hall; time for short eulogies and reminiscences until no later than 1:30 p.m. at

ADIOS JIMMY
Sadly, another Terlingua icon has departed us. This past week, Jimmy Holbrook of Passing Wind Ranch took his journey across the Great Divide after a long battle with cancer.  For many of us, Jimmy is perhaps best known as a decorated U.S. Marine who served with great distinction in the Vietnam War. For some, he was a constant fixture at the watering holes of Terlingua, goofing on his pals, and just being a happy-go-lucky guy.  Others sat with him in deep contemplation at the Catholic Church in Presidio where he dutifully went every Sunday to set himself straight with God.  Jimmy was always willing to lend a helping hand or a kind word.  He loved a good party, a stiff drink, and a funny story. Jimmy helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Terlingua Fire and EMS during his annual "rocket fuel" parties - named in honor of a cocktail he invented during his bartending days on Fire Island, New York.  No matter how you may have come to know him...if so, you were very lucky.  He was always a true friend.  Vaya con Dios, amigo....
Donations in memoriam can be made to Terlingua Fire and EMS.

TERLINGUA RECYCLES
Big week for Terlingua Recycles!!! This Thursday, October 20th, we take the recycling bins into the Panther Junction recycling center. Could use all the good hands we can get to join us as we drive into the park and sort our Community's recyclables. Meet at Terlingua's recycling center (behind the Terlingua EMS building on 170) and we'll leave at 8 a.m. and be back around 1. Don't worry if you don't have a ride to BBNP - one of the other volunteers will be happy to give you a lift. If you have any questions, please call 830-739-6986.
Thanks for helping us to keep Terlingua and the Big Bend/ South Brewster County GREEN!

LOST MINE TRAIL CLOSURE
Big Bend National Park has temporarily closed the popular Lost Mine Trail in the park’s Chisos Mountains area due to “increased bear activity.”
The park said in a press release the closure would begin Friday evening (October 14), and continue “until further notice.”
According to the park, recent rains have led to more abundant pine and oak nuts in parts of the Chisos Mountains, attracting bears to the area as they feed in preparation for their winter “denning” period. The central higher elevations of the park are already home to what the park calls a “healthy bear population.”
“During this period of heightened bear activity, we want to assure the safety of both park visitors and the bears,” Superintendent Cindy-Ott Jones said in a statement.
The temporary closure does not affect any other trails or areas of the park, though the park is advising visitors more broadly to “be bear aware”, and to secure all food in bear boxes available at campsites or inside vehicles.

Our Community Mourns One of Our Own

. Blair Pittman passed away this morning. Blair was a famous and infamous photographer from Houston paper in the old days, came out to Big Bend regularly and ultimately settled out here. He was married to Jeanne Northsworthy in the 80s and was around Lajitas and involved with us all during the Mischer days and with the local old-timers..like Ross Maxwell.
He and Jean Hardy-Pittman fell in love and have been married for quite a while now and we have enjoyed them both often in the Ghostown. She has been his angel and he knew it. He shot our Big Bend so wonderfully and he loved it deeply. May he RIP….and we will miss him a lot. I loved him.
Memorial service to be decided later.

"My companions were elated to be back in the desert. I was overwhelmed. My skin cracked, needles stuck me, and the sun forced me into shadows at noon. I thought it was inconceivable for someone to really love that hard country, unaware that it had already gotten through my tender hide and had quietly seized my heart." ---- Photographer Jim Bones, Jr., on his first real trip to West Texas

You play like you practice, so practice like you play. It was in that spirit that medics from TFEMS, Big Bend National Park, Amistad National Recreation Area, and Border Patrol participated in four days of advanced life support training this week. The goal - to always be ready to give their best for their patients.

The Terlingua recycling program is full steam ahead - thanks for the support from the community. We could use your help with ensuring recycling items get in the correct bins (and that containers are well cleaned). We've had a lot of folks through town recently and while it's great folks are recycling, it's quite a bit of work to have to move things to the right bins before taking the containers into the recycling station. Anything you can do to help along those lines would be great.

Don't forget the Green Scene - October 22. They are doing a world of good for this area and we all need to support them any way we can. Remember - recycling takes little effort on our part, but makes a big difference to our world. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.Check out the Terlingua Recycles Facebook page.
