TERLINGUA MOON
April 24, 2018 ~ Volume  29 ~ #17
By Million sMiles

From Terry Tempest Williams' book, The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America’s National Parks:
"Big Bend is no place for cynics. There is too much at stake. A bedrock pragmatism refutes sentimentality through the beauty of the unexpected. What we mistake as sentimental is in fact a generosity, a willingness to stay open and acknowledge the miraculous.
Cynicism flourishes in air-conditioned rooms. Like any true place, the desert is a risk. Back into a barrel cactus and you may get hurt. But touch its yellow flowers with petals like wax and the pain from its needles lessens. Our fear of being touched removes us from a sensate world. The distant self becomes the detached self who no longer believes in anything. Awe is the moment when ego surrenders to wonder. This is our inheritance — the beauty before us. We cry. We cry out. There is nothing sentimental about facing the desert bare. It is a terrifying beauty."

Big Bend National Park Implements Fire Prevention Measures
Due to prolonged extreme fire danger, Big Bend National Park is implementing a ban on smoking in the Chisos Basin Campground. The park already prohibits smoking on all Chisos Mountains trails, including popular day hikes such as the Lost Mine and Window Trails. Smoking will only be allowed at designated smoking areas (areas with outside cigarette/ash receptacles).
Additionally, all types of fires are now also prohibited along the Rio Grande corridor within the park. A ban on charcoal fires was implemented in the park last month.
These measures will remain in effect until fire danger abates significantly.
Since January, precipitation has been well below normal, and the park is continuing to experience dry
conditions with no foreseeable change. These factors result in extremely dry vegetation that is highly
susceptible to even the smallest spark. A fire would spread rapidly, be difficult to suppress, and pose
extreme risks to park visitors and staff.
Visitors can help Big Bend prevent fires by using pull-outs along roadways rather than parking on
vegetation, using extreme caution while handling any type of flame (camp stoves, lighters, etc.), and
properly disposing of cigarette butts where smoking is allowed.
Smoking will only be allowed at designated smoking areas (buildings with ash tray) for these two areas.

Artists .... time for a fun installation, "Wots in the Box?".  First time ever!! ... A daring way for a patron of the arts to get a new piece of art. Artists put art in a  box.  Artwork is described by artist, however the work is purchased unseen. The art is purchased for either 25, 50, or 100 dollars. Original works ... so this is a great way for Patrons to begin or continue to collect art. We will have several pieces from local artists that are debuting  in this installation.  This is the perfect opportunity to move inventory, an odd piece, or try something new. No, the art does not need to be recycled art! However, the installation will be in the window at Gallery on the Square during the R3 show.  Call of art with details are can be found on facebook at:https://www.facebook.com/events/366183217198912/  or simply send an email request to thebackroomgroup@gmail.com. Important Dates:
Entries due:        April 22-24
Show Dates:       April 26 ~ June 19
Reception:          Friday, May 4-   5pm to 7pm
Gallery On The Square, 115 West Holland Ave, Alpine

Life on the US-Mexico border is fluid for many wildlife species
By: Zach Fitzner on 04.10.2018
https://www.earth.com/news/us-mexico-border-wildlife/
Big Bend National Park in Texas shares a border with Mexico for 118 miles says the National Park Service website.  On the same website, under the heading of ‘Safety Advice’ is a recommendation:

“People in distress may ask for food, water, or other assistance. It is recommended that you do not make contact with them, but note the location, and immediately notify park rangers. Lack of water is a life-threatening emergency in the desert.”
It’s clear from the context that this refers to illegal immigrants from Mexico.  Elsewhere on the website, the subject of border merchants is broached. On the U.S. side of the border, tourist items such as walking sticks and bracelets are left for sale by Mexican merchants.  The website says buying these items encourages illegal crossing of the river which may lead to incarceration.

According to NPR, The Big Bend Sector of the border has had the lowest apprehension rate of illegal crossers annually for the last 44 years.  The inhospitable terrain might be the reason why. Unlike in the Sonoran desert, the terrain of Big Bend might keep many from even trying to cross into the US, outside of border merchants.

In Big Bend, the Rio Grande River which already forms a natural border between US and Mexico is also of supreme importance to wildlife.  A potential border wall could kill animals searching for a drink in the arid Chihuahuan Desert. Black Bears, Mountain Lions, Big Horn Sheep, Coyotes, and Coati all live in the park.  Wildlife doesn’t respect borders and needs freedom to move for survival, especially in demanding desert regions.

Bordering Big Bend National Park on the Mexico side are Cañón de Santa Elena Flora and Fauna Protection Area and Maderas Del Carmen Biosphere Reserve, both of which are sister parks to Big Bend.  As sister parks, the managing agencies of the parks in the US and Mexico work together on things such as wildlife monitoring on both sides of the border. All together, the two Mexican protected areas and the one in the US make up The Big Bend Conservation Corridor Initiative, protecting more than 3 million acres, an area Wikipedia notes, as large as the US state of Connecticut.  As the name corridor implies, the area has been set aside partially to enable migration of wildlife north to south through the border region.

At the turn of the last century, Black Bears were said to be common in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park.  Ranchers, hunters and federal predator control agents put an end to Black Bears in the Big Bend region. By 1944 when Big Bend National Park was established, there were virtually no Black Bears at all.

In the 1980s bears made a comeback in Big Bend, journeying across the deserts of Mexico, swimming the Rio Grande a female from Sierra Del Carmen crossed even more desert in Texas to re-establish her species in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend once again.  Without the corridor left intact between the US and Mexico, Black Bears could never have come back to Big Bend.

So far, the president and his cabinet have said that Big Bend won’t be a place where an actual border wall will be built.

All along the border, parks and preserves in the US partner with those in Mexico to protect the land and wildlife common to both.  Chiricahua National Monument, Saguaro National Park, Coronado National Memorial all in Arizona have sister Parks in Mexico. White Sands National Monument in New Mexico partners with Cuatrocienagas Biosphere Reserve to develop shared inventory and monitoring programs.  Besides Big Bend in Texas, Padre Island National Seashore also partners with a Biosphere Reserve and a National Park in Mexico.......

POATRI WEBSITE:
We are working diligently to getting the well back up to full operation. In the interim we have initiated some water management steps so we can continue to service our ranch owners. We are issuing water management cards to everyone who comes to the office to buy water. Each household is allowed 300 gallons per week. We are limiting sales to 1700 gallons per day. First come first serve.
WYLIE WATER TANK LOAD
Folks!  IT WILL RAIN. The Wylie water-catchment, tank order is about 1/2 filled.
They are freight-free if we order a full load of at least 8 tanks. Cost per gallon ratio, these are the best bang for the buck, plus, they are State sales tax free.  Wylie, a Texas based company since the 1930s, is the gold standard of heavy-duty, warrantied, agricultural products.  Call the Burrs to reserve yours 371-2506 or leave contact info on our answering machine and we'll get back to you.
