TERLINGUA MOON
Vol 26.  No. 39
September 29, 2015

The night flows back, the mighty stillness embraces and includes me; I can see the stars again and the world of starlight. I am twenty miles or more from the nearest fellow human, but instead of loneliness I feel loveliness. Loveliness and a quiet exultation.

Becoming Fine Art and Mechanic Shop: Auto technicians do not relish telling their customers that they need expensive repair work, …especially if it is due to lack of proper maintenance. What they do enjoy are customers that get their regularly-scheduled maintenance done, i.e. oil changes, tune-ups, EFI cleanings, etc. These services add years to your car’s life, often result in better gas mileage, and give your tech the opportunity on a consistent basis to look your car over for any fluid leaks or other "first tells" of more serious issues.  Call 371-2694 or stop by. The Gallery is open and we have new stuff.

Brewster County, TX, September 21, 2015 – The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office and the Brewster County Office of Emergency Management recently resumed the use of the CodeRED community and emergency notification system.  This system will be used to provide information to the residents of Brewster County about road closures, emergencies, and other information.

The CodeRED community and emergency notification system is used by the City of Alpine and Brewster County to provide emergency information to the public through several different means, such as a recorded voice message, text message, and email.  When residents sign up for CodeRED they can choose several different ways to receive these notifications.  Residents are highly encouraged to sign up for this free service at www.brewstercountytx.com/code-red.  For residents that do not have internet access there will be copies of the signup form available at the Alpine Police Department, Terlingua Fire & EMS station, and the Marathon Public Library.

Additionally, a CodeRED Mobile Alert app is available for Apple and Android smart phones.  This app is free and utilizes a smart phone’s GPS receiver to alert the phone’s owner when there is a CodeRED alert issued nearby.

Big Bend National Park Welcomes 4th Grade Students Through “Every Kid In a Park” Initiative. Big Bend National Park invites all 4th grade students to visit the park for free as part of the White House’s new Every Kid in a Park program.  Starting September 1, 4th grade students can now go to www.everykidinapark.gov to complete an activity and obtain a free annual entry pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks. "We’re offering a special invitation to fourth graders and their families to discover not only Big Bend National Park, but all our national parks.  During the National Park Service’s 2016 Centennial celebration, we want everyone to get out and explore these national treasures,” said Superintendent Cindy Ott-Jones.  “We hope these free passes will introduce 4th graders, their classes, and families to places where they can explore, play, and learn.”
To receive their free pass for national parks, fourth graders can visit the Every Kid in a Park website and play a game to access their special Every Kid in a Park pass.  Fourth graders and their families can then use this pass for free entry to national parks and other federal public lands and waters across the country from September 1, 2015, through August 31, 2016.

Mark your calendars for National Public Lands Day Saturday, September 26th, 2015, at Big Bend National Park.  National Public Lands Day is a chance to join with others to support public lands, and to volunteer on a park improvement project.  All volunteers receive free entrance to the national park, camaraderie, and a fun-filled day!
Big Bend National Park staff will host a volunteer project on September 26th cutting brush in the Chisos Basin.  This is part of an ongoing fuel reduction project that helps protect park facilities in the event of a wildfire.  The brush that is cut during National Public Lands Day will be transported to a site in the northern part of the park, where it will be used to help control erosion and re-establish grasses in historically heavily impacted areas.  The project is free and open to the public.  Volunteers and park staff will meet in the Chisos Basin parking lot (CCC Pavilion) at 8:30 am.  The park will provide volunteers with tools, work shirts, gloves and water.  Please call Daphne Sewing at 432-477-1110 (Daphne_Sewing@nps.gov) for more information.

Vaporized!  NPS Director Jonathan Jarvis issued a policy memorandum Monday prohibiting the use of electronic smoking devices in all places where tobacco smoking is prohibited in national parks. The policy is effective immediately. “Protecting the health and safety of our visitors and employees is one of the most critical duties of the National Park Service. We are therefore extending the restrictions currently in place protecting visitors and employees from exposure to tobacco smoke to include exposure to vapor from electronic smoking devices”

ROSS Needs a Home!!  ROSS was pulled from a shelter to avoid being euthanized and is in foster care in Ft. Davis. For many, many months he has been dreaming of the day that he can go home to his permanent family. One benefit of adopting from a foster arrangement is the opportunity for lots of info... ROSS is very good-natured, happy for outdoor activity and then to be a couch potato, loves people and gets along well with some dogs. He has shared a home with lots of other fosters dogs who have found their families, but will also be a great only dog. ROSS is great walking on a leash, riding in the car, splashing in his doggy pool, chasing after tennis balls (returning said balls, not so much), taking hikes and rolling on his back for belly rubs. He has an eager, impish personality that inspires big smiles. ROSS can travel to meet interested/approved adopters. ROSS is about 5 years old, neutered, microchipped, up to date on all his shots and hoping to meet you soon! For more info email mmwesttx@yahoo.com

MOOOON XTRA!!!!!!!!!

Not in Our Big Bend
As of 9:00am, Wednesday, September 2, 2015, we have a total of 132 impactful, substantive comments that have been filed in the Environmental Assessment (EA) Scoping Comment period for FERC Docket CP15-500, the proposed Presidio Crossing Project, associated with the proposed Trans-Pecos Pipeline.

In total, there are now 450 comments filed on the docket, including those submitted in the initial public comment period, and those submitted during the EA Scoping period.

We know there are more coming, based on the “in-flight” strategy.

For those of you, especially if you are a Big Bend Conservation Alliance member, who have not yet commented, the deadline is Friday, September 4, 2015 at 4:00pm Central Time. We encourage you to submit your comment ahead of this deadline, as the FERC Online system can get busy and behave unpredictably near a deadline.

In this EA Scoping comment period, FERC is addressing environmental inputs (species-specific concerns, threatened & endangered species, protected species, including plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, soil disturbance, habitat fragmentation, etc.), cultural and historical impacts (archeological sites, historical sites, culturally significant sites), and socioeconomic issues (threats to tourism, ranching economy, disparate impacts on population, etc.).

Here are links to the comment resources, tutorials, and process:

Big Bend Library Presentation
Monthly presentations at The Big Bend Library will resume on Thursday September 24th at 6:00 p.m.
Please join us at the library for a program led by Jeff Leach entitled: Chasing Our Ancestral Microbiome.
We are not alone. And that’s a good thing. After 3.5 billion years of dominating life on earth, microbes are finally having their day. Until recently, it was not known that more than 99.9% of the genes that make up the human body are in fact microbial in origin. This important little piece of information means we are more microbe than mammal. Advances in next generation DNA sequencing and computational tools has begun to shed light on the role of microbes in common disease such as obesity, irritable bowel disease, autism, kidney stones, celiac disease, a vast array of autoimmune disease – and the list goes on. But these are early days and a lot of work needs to be done. One important area of interest is trying to understand what a balanced and healthy microbiome actually looks like at various stages in life. Increasing evidence suggest that populations in the western world have lost a third or more of the microbial diversity we once enjoyed at this simple reduction in ecological diversity may be in the base of what ails us in a modern world. In this presentation we will discuss our attempt to recapture our ancient microbiome through our work with one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer groups in Africa.
Big Bend Library is located on the campus of Terlingua Common School District.
Programs are free, open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
If you would like to help with refreshments or make a donation, please contact Glenda Luttrell @ 371-2552.
We look forward to seeing you there for this interesting and informative program!
