THE TERLINGUA MOON

VOL. 32, NO. 13    March 30, 2021     By MaeWestern

“We’re all down in the gutter, but some of us are looking up at the stars.”   Oscar Wilde

All Texas adults are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine as of Monday, March 29th. Anyone who received their first dose of COVID vaccine at the Red Pattillo community center on March 3rd should return to receive their second dose on April 1st. Same time, same place! Please make a plan to be there. If you have questions or need help, please call Sara Colando at 432-371-2902. We’re working to arrange another 1st dose clinic in Terlingua/Study Butte, but don’t have any firm plans yet.

CORRECTION!  I've just been told that the National Guard will be administering 2nd Doses of Moderna's Coronavirus Vaccine on March 31st, NOT on April 1st.

This 2nd Dose Vaccination Clinic is for anyone who received their 1st dose at the previous clinic on March 3rd.

If you were administered the 1st Dose on March 3rd at the Red Pattillo Community Center, your vaccination card will state that you should receive your second dose on or after April 1st. THIS IS NOT CORRECT.

Your dose will be ready and waiting for you on MARCH 31 AT THE EMERGENCY RESPONSE CENTER ON FM 170.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD THAT THE DATE AND LOCATION HAS BEEN CHANGED!

~ Commissioner Sara Allen Colando

The Brewster County Courthouse will be closed on Friday, April 2, 2021, in observance of Good Friday.

Check your plant’s vitals: Desert landscape question of the week: "Is this plant alive or dead?" Well with some things we just don't know yet and have to wait and see. If it is native it is likely fine. The less cold hardy varieties are the ones to watch. The oleander, bougainvillea, mexican petunia, palms and eucalyptus, just to name a few. Oh the eucalyptus! I have been watching all over town leaves turn from green to crispy grey. The freeze in 2011 killed every single one above ground. The trunks you see today are the ones that grew back from the roots as most of them did. THIS freeze was not as bad as that one, but we have extra chainsaw chains just in case. “I moved here in 1988 to dedicate my life to the Big Bend and its people. I don’t shoot pictures and leave and make a book. This work is a slow accumulation of years of being here. The mountains are familiar friends and the people my heroes. I am one of them.”

— James Evans

Boquillas del Carmen Covid Relief 2021

Boquillas del Carmen is a village of 250 souls across the Rio Grande from Big Bend National Park, Texas.  Its economy is dependent on visitors from Big Bend.  Due to Covid-19, "non-essential traffic"  is restricted between the US and Mexico. The Port of Entry was closed March 21, 2020.  The federal order has been extended one month at a time since that date. The current order runs through March 21, 2021. It is likely the closure will be extended beyond that date. The months of March and April are the most popular to visit and therefore the people of Boquillas receive a large part of their annual income during those months.  We are redoubling our efforts to assist our friends in need.

We coordinate our efforts with the municipal government of Ocampo, a 12,000 square mile jurisdiction, equivalent to a county in the US, that includes Boquillas and more than 40 other remote villages in northern Coahuila. They purchase the supplies at government warehouses at the best prices and deliver the goods at no expense to the fund.  We understand that there are many needs during these trying times and hope you will be able to donate to this cause. Thank you for your generosity.

Sustainable Terlingua LLC

Desert landscape question of the week: "Is this plant alive or dead?" Well with some things we just don't know yet and have to wait and see. Jenny is headed to the outside world this weekend to stock up on some cold hardy alternatives like Juniper, Mesquite, Oak, Sumac, Mountain Laurel, and Desert Willow. If you want native plants that will survive these cold spells, contact us right away to place an order. Sustainable Terlingua, schooleriscooler@gmail.com 371-2501
