The Terlingua Moon
 May 29, 2018 -- Vol. 29, #22
by Ghostwriters on the Sly

Next MOON: MaeWestern

It's HOT out there!  May and June are typically the hottest and driest months of the year in Big Bend, with daytime temperatures often reaching 100 and heat indices near 120 degrees Fahrenheit! Protect yourself from deadly heat stroke by following some simple guidelines: hike early and be off the trail before noon, wear sun protective clothing and a hat, drink at least 1 quart/hour of water (1 gallon/day or more), eat salty snacks, and seek shade.  Drinking water alone will not keep you cool!  Here in Big Bend, even the mountain trails can  reach the high 90's in the shade in the summer.  Take care of yourself and your hiking buddies so you can hike another day.

IT'S A FLOWER MOON ...;) SEE YU THERE ...
Depending on the tribe, May’s Full Moon was called the Full Flower Moon as well as Mother’s Moon, Milk Moon, and Corn Planting Moon. The May Moon marked a time of increasing fertility, with temperatures warm enough for safely bearing young, a near end to late frosts, and plants in bloom.

There will be a SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BREWSTER COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT MAY 30 AT THE RED PATILLO COMMUNITY CENTER. (Anyone who signs up can have up to 5 minutes for a public comment before the Court.)  Please come to this public meeting at 10AM on Wednesday, May 30 at the Red Pattillo community center. [Editor’s Comment: Hopefully, there will be discussion about the recycling issue.  This editor will be out of town or I would attend and comment.]

On June 12, 2018, communities across the state of Texas will be gathering in recognition of Women Veterans
Day, to recognize the role of women in the military forces and commemorate the sacrifices of and valor displayed by Texas women veterans. On June 12, 1948, President Harry Truman signed into law the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to serve as permanent, regular members of the armed forces. Last year, Senate Bill 805 established June 12th as Women Veterans Day in Texas. As home to more women veterans than any other state, Texas is in a unique position to take the lead on many women veterans’ issues. For ideas on how you can help recognize women veterans in your community, and for a listing of already scheduled events, visit www.tvc.texas.gov/women-veterans/womenvetsday/

Some people saw it and let me know. It was gone when I went to look for it. I’m sure someone is keeping it safe and hoping to find the owner. I would love to get it back. Thank you all!  ~Marc Utter

Hey there, it's me Grizzly! I am a well behaved, 3 year old mixed breed and I am not one to brag, but I am "kind of a big deal." My manners, sweetness and overall amazing attitude make me a remarkable dog! Although I have been in the shelter for quite some time, I am patiently waiting for my forever home and I am not losing hope! I love catching raindrops on my tongue, making new dog friends and I get along with every dog I meet. I am wonderful with all humans too; I don't pull on the leash and am fully house trained. All I need is a loving home and belly rubs - and I will be so grateful! C'mon, come visit me at the shelter. I can't wait to meet you! I am micro chipped and fully vaccinated. MORE ON MESQUITE BEANS:
Many people have been asking about bean picking and it sounds like there will be several "pickin parties" going on when the time comes. For now it’s time to start taste testing.
The taste test is really important because you can have one tree that is sweet and one tree right beside it that is bitter and disgusting. We don't want bitter, disgusting flour, we want SWEET! So, when the beans on the tree begin to turn RED (some trees on Terlingua Creek are at this stage now) taste the bean and if it's good, mark the tree so you can come back to it later. Might be a good idea to pick up some flagging tape at Bee Mountain Hardware.
Remember that this first year we will be driving the beans to Tucson for milling into flour for a travelling hammermill so that we can mill our own beans in the future.

THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED SATURDAY FOR RANGE CLEAN UP DAY
There were 17 who raked brass & shot gun shells, built target frames and pulled a few weeds. Joel and Sylvia have put the finishing touches on Pistol Range #2 with the completion of the seats and tables. It is awesome. Thanks so much members. The range is now ready for the Women on Target Shooting Clinic on Saturday, May 26, 2018.
Since we are now "clean", please as you use the range, make an effort to pick up your brass and shotgun shells and clays. There will be barrels to put the brass in set up within the next week or so. The brass will be given to the boy scouts as a fund raiser. We will have a WOT volunteers orientation meeting at 6:00 pm Thursday 5/24/2018 on the Rifle Range. If you are wanting to help and cannot make that meeting, please just give Donnie Newberry 294-0272 or Linda Murray 915-204-1472 a call.
Again a special thanks to: Sylvia Nelson, Monica McBride, Joel Nelson, Don Cadden, Monty Kimball, Jim Wilson, Dennis Yancy, Nick Harrison, Jim Westerman, Thomas Adair, Denis Foley, Kurt Stropoli, James Blair, Isabelle Blair, Linda Murray, Sky Lambert (made it toward the end-he had yard sale going on).

TERLINGUA COMMUNITY GARDEN
It´s almost time for the Mesquite Bean Harvest and Terlingua Community Garden needs YOU to help gather clean, dry, ripe and good tasting beans for milling into flour. Later on this summer we will be driving a truckload of beans to Tuscon for milling and then for Green Scene '18, we will be featuring many different edibles made with mesquite bean flour for folks to taste and enjoy. This is a combined effort between the Terlingua, Alpine, Marfa and Presidio communities to raise funds for a traveling hammermill so that anyone can mill their own beans in their own community and take advantage of this local, yummy and FREE food resource.
Visit www.desertharvesters.org/harvesting-processing/ for information on picking the right beans. They are the best resource for learning all about harvesting and cooking with mesquite bean flour. Drop your harvested beans off at Terlingua Community Garden in the ghost town. We need a lot, like a vanload.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS
If you are in the area, I will be conducting a short night sky photography class through Big Bend Ranch State Park the evenings of Friday June 15th and Saturday June 16th. Probably a couple of hours. Same class both nights. The exact timing is still to be determined. But those should be firm dates. Please contact BBRSP soon for info. Or contact me. It’s a free class. #bigbend #bigbendranchstatepark #genesisworkshops #nightsky    Robert Miller

Pedestrians will be able to access the port between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Friday through Monday. This is a change from the current days of operation, which are Wednesday through Sunday. This change in days reflects visitation patterns, which are reduced during the extreme heat of the summer.

I hope some of you will stop by and sit for a portrait.
I’m happy to email your portrait to you in a few weeks (once I’m home and have gone through them all) if you ‘ll just remember to give me your email address after the photos are made.
I don’t have any plans for the photographs I’ll make just yet, other than to add them to my portfolio. You can see some of my portrait work on my website, if you’d like to get a feel for what I do."         Tasha Thomas        http://tashathomasphotography.com/people/

Big Bend National Park is seeking input to update the 1995 Backcountry Management Plan. This document directs park management on wilderness and backcountry use topics, including backpacking, primitive car camping, backcountry use limits, and other considerations. Public meetings will be held at the Brewster County Multi-Purpose Facility in Study Butte on May
8, and at the Sul Ross State University Morgan Conference Center in Alpine on May 9. During these meetings, members of the public and stakeholders can learn more about the plan, ask questions of park staff, and make written suggestions and comments. Both meetings will begin at 6 pm and last one hour. The park encourages individuals, partners, and organizations to add their perspective and input to assist park management with their planning decisions.

BIG BEND RANCH STATE PARK
Barton Warnock Visitor Center, Lajitas, Texas   Saturday May 5, 2018    8:00 PM

John Cassidy of the Texas Section of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA Texas). John Cassidy is an amateur astronomer, secretary of the Austin Astronomical Society, and treasurer of the Texas Section of the International Dark-Sky Association.  Cindy will present an informative talk about the effects of artificial light on living things, including ourselves, and how we can reduce the negative effect of our lights followed by a star party led by John.
