Constructed in 1964, the main Chisos    Mountains Lodge building is an important part of the park’s history and visitor infrastructure. Over many years, instability of the soils beneath the building has led to significant damage to the foundation, walls, and building systems. In addition, burgeoning Big Bend visitation has also surpassed the kitchen and dining service capabilities of the facility. In 2019, park staff began the process to evaluate solutions for a lodge facility to serve the next generation of Big Bend visitors.

Since then, the NPS and Architectural Resources Group (ARG) have been busy developing the plans for a brighter future for the Chisos Basin. The new facility will fit the landscape, be highly energy and water efficient, and serve the visitors of today and into the future. Construction is expected to begin late Spring 2025 and continue for two years.

Attendees at the public meetings will have a chance to view artist renderings of the future facility and participate in discussions regarding visitor access to the popular Chisos Basin area during the construction project. Replacement of the Lodge will necessitate the closure of the area around the Lodge, camper store, main parking lot, and Chisos Basin Visitor Center, but it is expected that there will still be limited visitor access to other parts of the Basin.

“Our goal is to provide as much access to the Chisos Basin to as many user groups as can be safely accommodated,” said acting Superintendent Tinney. “It is also important
that we share with and ask for input from those who love this special place.”

Regular updates on the Chisos Basin Lodge replacement project will be shared on the park’s social media streams as well as on the Big Bend National Park website at:
go.nps.gov/chisosbasinfuture

There will be a
Facebook Livestream of the 3/25 Terlingua meeting on the Brewster County Commissioner Facebook page:

MARCH 5 IS PRIMARY ELECTION DAY
PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE . . . the primary elections are here.  Early voting for Precincts 5, 6 & 7 has been dismal!  Less than 1% have voted in this election.  Get out there and vote Texans! Don't let a small percentage of people make big decisions that impact all of us. Primary Election Day is Tuesday, March 5th.

The primaries are important because this is your chance to decide what candidates from your party will be on the ballot in November.  Sample ballots for both parties are available from the Brewster County Elections Information website: http://www.brewstercountytx.com/vote/.  Information on candidates is available from a number of locations including https://www.vote411.org/ballot.  Remember, you cannot use your cell phone while voting but you can write down your choices and take that with you to the booth.

COME HEAR THE GAUCHO STORIES
For any interested parties, This Thursday evening (March 7) at 6:00pm at the Cinnabar Theatre, I (Farmer) will be hosting a Recap/Q and A/Slideshow of her recent adventure racing horses in the Gaucho Derby in Patagonia last month. The outpouring of love and support from this community before, during, and after the race was very special to me and I can't thank you all enough. Come see me on Thursday and I'll tell you all about time-traveling and the wild shenangians had in the land of the Gauchos. BYOB and BYOQ (bring questions!). And as always, don't be afraid to come in your finest wigs and hats or your other favorite costume pieces or other esteemed outfits collecting dust in your closet. We're aiming to have a good time <3 (If you can’t make it, it will (hopefully) be recorded).

EARTH & FIRE GALLERY
For the month of March we welcome guest artist Lori Griffin. Come on down and check out her beautiful artwork! Reception will be March 16 from 5p-8p.

COMMUNITY GARDEN
Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00.  Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're there every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.

Fresh eggs, local art, handcrafted textile goods, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms and skin care products, essential oil perfumes, Zoey's leather goods, handcrafted, creative jewelry, including Kim's, many made with local stones, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel, Sandy's super cute pop-up shop, Val's pastry cart and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here. Indeed, lately, chess players have been meeting up for a game or two or three or...

We welcome new vendors. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com or pop in to the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

THANK YOU
Looks like the word has gotten out. I don't go to the post office often, but I was there today. The bookshelves for the free book swap sure look great! Just books on shelves, no boxes lining the wall. Thanks, friends and neighbors, for doing your part!
(I posted a while back about the mess in the lobby after a chat with Lisa. She was ready to chuck it all.)
