“We have agreed not to drive our automobiles into cathedrals, concert halls, art museums, legislative assemblies, private bedrooms and the other sanctums of our culture.  We should treat our national parks with the same deference, for they, too, are holy places.” – Edward Abbey

SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET – June 6, Set-up Donation Waived!
May just blew right by.  June is already here, with this week being the first Saturday of June, so no set-up fee for vendors this week, June 6.  While the mobile library is taking the summer off, the Saturday Community Market is staying open for the summer as we've got it made in the shade down the little hill in the Community Garden, a nice spot to visit in the Ghost Town and to set up and sell your stuff!

Come see us at the Saturday Community Market, open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  Located in the Ghost Town, down in the Community Garden, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, sourdough bread, all natural lip balms and skin care products, all natural essential oil fragrances, beard oil and massage oils, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more ‑‑ you never know just what or who you'll find here.

Flea market items are also welcome.  After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green.  We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.

We welcome new vendors.  To make it easy for new vendors to try our market and to show our appreciation to our regular vendors, we waive set-up fees on the first Saturday of the month, offering free set-up on that day.

For more information, text or call 432.213.1863 or pop in at the market for a chat.  Prepared food vendors must display current food handling license.  (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

KEEP BIG BEND WILD
The letter from almost all of the former BBNP superintendents urging the DHS Secretary not to waive any laws inside the National Park, organized by KEEP BIG BEND WILD and the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks (protectnps.org), has been widely circulated on Capitol Hill.  The letter and the issue it raised received immediate attention – as we hoped -- by Politico Pro, which is read by almost everyone in the government in DC.  Unfortunately, that article is behind a firewall, making it difficult for the rest of us to read it.  But Sam Karas of our own Big Bend Sentinel gave it outstanding coverage last week (Former National Park superintendents ask DHS not to waive laws for border wall construction).  We are very grateful for the great reporting that the Sentinel and Marfa Public Radio do for our community.

We need to keep up the pressure and urge Secretary Mullin to follow existing law and process – which are working here – and not waive all the federal laws in the national park which would hold them accountable to protect the nationally-significant resources and values of our national park, “Texas’ Gift to the Nation.”

That pressure has been working, at least to some degree.  It appears increasingly unlikely that an actual 30-foot steel wall will be constructed within the national park and the Colorado Canyon portion of the state park.  We also learned last week from Rep. Lloyd Doggett’s office that CBP is saying they have no intention of lighting any security infrastructure inside either park.

Yet it is also apparent that CBP feels the need to do something significant in our parks, needed or not, wanted or not.  After all, they have a $1.7 billion contract to expend.  We remain very concerned about a possible new patrol road parallel to the river and south of the existing River Road in the national park, and will continue to fight that.

Please learn more at keepbigbendwild.org, and consider supporting Keep Big Bend Wild.  There's no more important time.  Donations are welcome (we're financially sponsored by the El Paso Community Foundation, a 501c3), but we need you to allow us to list you as a supporter even more – no need to donate.  Local business supporters are especially appreciated.

We're also looking for additional people to join our core team (ie the board), especially from the Big Bend area.  Contact bob.krumenaker@keepbigbendwild.org to discuss.

ALL YOU NEED TO ATTEND AN AA MEETING IS A DESIRE TO QUITIf you have, or think you might have, a drinking problem, we meet at 6:30 PM on Thursday at the Big Bend Church, just north of the post office.

BIG BEND EPISCOPAL MISSION-OTRA VEZ THRIFT SHOP ‑‑ The Otra Vez Thrift Shop is now closed for the summer. Thank you community members for your donations and support. Please do not drop off any donations. We do not have a trash service and do not want donations being ruined by weather or littered across our beautiful desert. We will open back up in September and can accept donations at that time.
