Terlingua Moon
August 28, 2018
Volume 29 - #35

"... we would become nothing without deep and pressing country, places we can never name or possess. Our insides would weaken if we did not have such things. Our minds would become bitter and self-absorbed. I had many times tried to invent a valid argument for the preservation of wilderness and could never find it within the bounds of my language. But I knew that without these far places we were risking ourselves as a species. We need these anchors in the land. . . If we didn't have a place like this, we'd die without ever knowing we were dead. We'd just keep building things that make our lives better, letting us live longer, but dead the whole time."Craig Childs

Reduce, reuse, RECYCLING is where it’s at, you have SO MANY OPTIONS!
1) Our county leaders heard us loud and clear when we said we didn’t want to pay to fill up the Alpine landfill. Hal Flanders recycling center is officially open to all county residents, all you have to do is sign in which includes putting the date, a name, checking whether you live in the city or county and checking what you brought that day.
2) If you don’t make it to Alpine and use the trailer in Study Butte, Robert Krull is THE guy to figure out how to transfer all that stuff and NEEDS helpers when it gets to the national park. When? The first Thursday of every month (that’s next week!), meet at the trailer at 8am or the maintenance building behind Panther Junction an hour or so later. I heard a rumor that CC makes muffins for the occasion, YUM!
3) If neither option flips your lid there is a paid pickup service and I have been told that it is THE most convenient option AND some folks have been able to shrink the size of their dumpster, AND there are brand new recyclers on the block including the Barton Warnock Visitor’s Center of Big Bend Ranch State Park.
So seriously, it's time. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. #lessthan20tons

Jo Jo Villarreal Sadly, we lost another of our unique locals August 8th, 2018. Joe Villarreal (Jo Jo) died at home after a brief illness.
Jo Jo and his wife Carol met in Lajitas around 25 or so years ago. He was a character in the classic South County sense of the word.
Jo Jo's sense of humor was extremely keen and he could hit you with a punchline with a completely straight face. Jo Jo was an expert
dancer - and that's no joke.  He had been a professional dance instructor earlier in his life and many locals took lessons from him. It was
a treat to watch some of his students perform very complicated Tango moves at their informal recitals.  Jo Jo was also a Veteran; U.S. Army.
Our love and hearts go out to Carol. She asked that we give a smile and a laugh to each other in memory of JoJo. There will be a Memorial
Celebration of Life at a  future date, to be held a the Rock House on the Rio in Lajitas, a place very special to JoJo. Rest in Peace our friend.

Espresso ... y poco mas! Summer is over!  Happy Labor Day!   On Saturday we return to our regular hours:  7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our special this week will be a migas plate with beans, avocado and tortillas - $10.  Come see us for the best coffee in town and great cooked to order food.  Breakfast and lunch, fresh squeezed orange juice and fantastic sandwiches.  Sit in the shade, enjoy the wifi and meet old and new friends.

Veterans History Project. If you are a veteran, and would like to share your Veteran Story for The Veterans History project, please contact Ashley Estep at 210.921.3130.  The Veterans History Project is about recording all veterans’ stories (raw and uncut)… it goes back to when a person is listening to his or her uncle, aunt, sister, brother, cousin, grandparent telling a military story at a BBQ. Someone had the idea that every military member has one of these stories and they are not being captured and recorded. So they came up with the Veterans History Project with the goal to collect, preserve and make accessible the personal accounts of America’s wartime veterans so that the future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand their selfless service. These stories have also helped in many research projects throughout our Nation.

These recordings or materials (photographs, journals etc.) will be archived at the Library of Congress. So any student that participates and interviews a veteran, will have their name associated with that interview at the Library of Congress forever. The Project will begin the first week of September and we would like to gather all stories by the last week of October. Once all stories are captured via CD or thumb drive, the stories will be taken to the Library of Congress. The stories of many veterans in our area can be archived for future generations to come.

Car Repair. With the average age of vehicles currently on the road reaching an all-time high of 10.8 years , cost-conscious consumers are choosing to keep their existing cars and trucks running rather than trade them in for new models. that also means many drivers are postponing needed repairs or maintenance as a money-saving measure. Unfortunately, delaying service not only represents false economy, it can compromise a car’s safety. call to schedule in your car repairs.

===============
“So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.” John McCain

Regular Meeting of the Brewster County Commissioners Court
Wednesday, August 22 at 9 AM
Courthouse at 6th and Avenue E, Alpine, Texas

The Big Bend Library will be open for public use on the campus of Big Bend High School on the first day of school August 27th.  The library is open from 8:00-12:00 and 1:00 - 4:00.  New this year, all visitors to the campus please stop at the BBHS office to get a visitor's badge.

Welcome Robert “Bob” Krumenaker, a veteran National Park Service (NPS) superintendent experienced in natural resource management, who has been named superintendent of Big Bend National Park by NPS Intermountain Region Director Sue Masica. Krumenaker, superintendent of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in northern Wisconsin since 2002, will assume his new duties on Sept. 17. The promotion marks his return to Texas, where Krumenaker held his first permanent NPS job at Big Thicket National Preserve in the early 1980s. His 41-year Park Service career has taken him from half a dozen seasonal jobs in several western parks and monuments to resource and leadership roles in NPS Washington headquarters, in two regional offices and at major national parks from Zion in Utah to Shenandoah in Virginia and the Everglades in Florida.
“Bob’s combination of strong leadership experience and resource management know-how equip him well for the challenges and opportunities at one of our most iconic parks,” Masica said. “His ability to cultivate and lead partnerships will be a special asset for both the park and the entire Big Bend community.”
At Apostle Islands, Krumenaker has forged key partner alliances. He helped complete a landmark treaty-rights agreement with 11 Chippewa tribes, and he helped build a highly successful local partnership to handle tens of thousands of winter visitors when extended deep freezes opened access to spectacular ice caves along miles of frozen Lake Superior.
“Big Bend is one of the world's special places, and it is an honor to be among its protectors,” Krumenaker said. “I couldn't be more excited to join the park’s team of passionate NPS employees, partners, and neighbors who call it home.”
Krumenaker began his NPS career in 1977 as a full-time volunteer at Canyonlands National Park. He has worked in more than 10 national parks in a variety of positions, from field ranger to superintendent. He also served in leadership roles in two different NPS regional offices.
A Senior Executive Fellows graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Krumenaker earned his bachelor’s degree in science at Brown University and his master’s in forest science at Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He is also a graduate of the Department of the Interior Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program.
Krumenaker enjoys woodworking and furniture craft, history and good fiction, hiking and other outdoor pursuits

TWO NEW TOWERS PROPOSED
In regards to the two new towers planned.. From what I recall reading a while back.. The tower near 118 on Terlingua Ranch Rd -- BBT agreed to lower the brightness but the lights will stay on even though it's under the requisite height that lights must be on. I just wonder if the new towers were scheduled for 200' based on need, or was it to avoid the argument and have lights regardless? Is it a "just what they have in stock" kind of thing? And are they even aware of the lighting ordinance? I'd like to know if the county commissioner responsible for the district has placed a call? Lots of questions and thoughts need answers. Ones that I think are best asked by full time residents, local media and Representatives of Brewster County.  -- Questions about the new cell towers posed by Marty Lehde.

MORE ON THE TOWERS FROM COUNTY COMMISSIONER GARRETT:
Dark Skies: Hugh Garrett, Brewster County Precinct 2 Commissioner
Brewster County Commissioners Court amended the Order Regulating Outdoor Lighting in Brewster County on June 13, 2018 to include new communication towers. The Order prohibits aviation safety lighting on towers <200' that do not require aviation safety lighting. The Order also requires that operators of towers >200' use the FAA required aviation safety lighting that minimizes the impact on our dark skies. Big Bend National Park and Big Bend State Park are certified IDA International Dark Sky Parks and Brewster County is working with our parks to maintain the dark skies.
Alta Towers, LLC published two public notices in the Big Bend Gazette August 2018 issue. The notices advised interested parties to submit comments regarding environmental concerns on the installation of two 270' towers in South Brewster County. Interested parties may also file a Request for Environmental Review of the two towers. Last month I contacted the project manager for these proposed towers and requested modification of the project to use <200' towers. I also contacted the FCC to propose that light pollution be included as part of Environmental Reviews for areas committed to dark skies. Are you an interested party!

SCOUT THE DOG
Scout's good looks caught your attention, didn't they?! Scout is a 1 year old mix who has a lot of energy but is happy to exhaust herself in play group with other dogs. She loves water, toys, and if you can catch her tuckered enough for snuggles, it's a precious thing! Scout has a lot of energy and will need keepers willing to continue her training, but what she needs most is out of the shelter. If you're looking for someone to keep you on your toes and reaching for the next horizon, Scout is your gal! For more information about Scout or any pet in the Alpine Shelter, email admin@alpinehumanesociety.org
