TERLINGUA MOON

Vol. 33 No. 30     July 18, 2022

Big Bend NP Closes Window Trail

Effective immediately, the Window Trail in the Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park is closed to public use until further notice. This emergency closure is due to significantly increased bear activity in the narrow trail corridor, and the safety of both the bears and the public is paramount. We ask for your cooperation during this time and apologize for the inconvenience. Both the upper and lower Window Trail trailheads are closed, and signs have been posted.

Big Bend Superintendent Bob Krumenaker said, “National Park biologists aremonitoring the bear activity and we will open the trail as soon as the bear activity in this area declines to normal levels. Our goal is to protect both the bears and park visitors. It’s their home – we’re the guests.”

The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage.

The Mexican Black Bears in Big Bend National Park are one of our success stories. When the park was established in 1944, bear sightings were very rare and infrequent. In the mid 1980's, visitors began reporting more and more bear sightings in the Chisos Mountains. Over the years through migrations from

Mexico, the bears have re-established themselves in Big Bend with a stable population without human intervention, which is also a rare event.

In the interest of protecting our precious wild natural resources, as well as for your own safety, park visitors are asked to please adhere to the Window Trail closure. Entering this closed area would be a violation of Chapter 36, section 1.5 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

Doug Crow

Heartfelt greetings to you all from James B. Balz, brother.

It is with sadness that I inform you of Doug's passing today while hospitalized here in Olympia. He and I had had a wonderful and exuberant conversation prior to  visiting hours...reminiscing about past adventures, wonderful relatives, and precious friends...He then underwent his usual therapy and had returned to his room for lunch. Shortly thereafter, his heart declared almost verbally: "I am tired, and wish to take a very needed rest.." Our wonderful "No Toe Crow" passed on to greener pastures and more plentiful forests, led by butterflies which had hatched from their larvae, now being able to fly, by hummingbirds who remember each flower they visit along a 10 to 15 thousand mile travel adventure, and by the spirits of all who preceded him as they made the transition from earth to the heavens not even conceivable in the minds we humans were given... Tonight we toast to cousin, brother, and uncle Doug. Please do not hesitate to call anytime you wish. We send love and hugs to you all as we experience our loss together.
