First Saturday of November means free set up for vendors, as a welcome to new vendors and a thank you to our regular vendors. Come see us at the Saturday Community Market, open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Located in the Ghost Town, down in the Community Garden, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, sour dough bread, jelly, pickles, all natural lip balms and skin care products, all natural essential oil fragrances, beard oil and massage oils, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.
We welcome new vendors. To make it easy for new vendors to try our market and to show our appreciation to our regular vendors, we waive set-up fees on the first Saturday of the month, offering free set-up on that day. For more information, text or call 432.213.1863 or pop in at the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

MILKY WAY TREATS Saturday morning bakery cart will be open this Saturday, November 7, 10am-12pm. We’ll have cinnamon rolls, kolaches, Gluten free chocolate cake, apple fritters and more! As you’ve probably noticed, I’ve scaled back on my pastry carts, doing them one time a month. But what I’m realizing is my work schedule is still very full. So, the pastry cart on Saturday, December 5, will be my very last pastry cart. It’s sad in one way to realize you have to cut back on your work because you just can’t do it all, but it’s a great feeling to know that you freed up some time in your life to enjoy why you’re really here. This was not an easy decision to make, because I love doing this for my community. Thank you for the past 5 years of supporting ‘the cart’. The ice cream trailer will be open this weekend as well, Saturday – Monday, 4 to 9 PM. I hope to see your smiling faces soon! Gracias, Terlingua.
31st ANNUAL KEN & JOEE BARNES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER - Join us November 14th at the Ghostown Horseshoe pits. We are changing it up this year! Instead of horseshoes - we are having a CORN HOLE tournament and CRIBBAGE of course (sign up at 9), BBQ (noonish) and silent auction (10 to 2 pm). 31st Annual Fundraiser for Terlingua High School graduate scholarships. We lost Joee May Barnes at the age of 16 after a tragic accident. The community opened their hearts and rallied to raise funds for our family, but it wasn’t needed for its intended purpose. We decided to return the money thru a Scholarship and my father, Ken Barnes, kept the scholarship fund going by honoring Joee’s memory with a Memorial Fundraiser every year. My husband, Jared, and I have kept the tradition going after Ken’s passing and the fundraiser now honors both their memories.

The Alpine Library conducts a yearly fundraiser over ArtWalk weekend. They solicit donations from the community and conduct a silent auction. Not sure of the location for the auction as yet but we usually put the word out as an appeal for donations.
The Alpine Public Library will be accepting donations for their silent auction until November 16. You can drop off your donated items to the Library and fill out a form for those items.
As I understand it, we may have donation forms at the Big Bend Gallery soon. The best option, though, would be to take items to the Library itself…..
This is an important yearly fundraiser for the Library and we all usually contribute as we can. The auction is also very fun to browse and bid!! Thanks!
KEEP Big Bend Wild!
As we nervously await news of whether or not the Supreme Court will uphold the preliminary injunction, and the results of the midterm elections, this is a good time to write about WHAT WE ARE FOR, not just what we oppose.
Keep Big Bend Wild’s expertise and credibility is centered on Big Bend National Park and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River, the lands and waters that are part of the National Park System.
We are for CBP taking the longstanding and still-valid Memorandum of Understanding with federal land management agencies seriously, which says that both the homeland security and conservation/public use missions are national priorities, and that the agencies are to work in partnership at the lowest possible level to achieve both missions without harming either through unilateral actions. (www.umt.edu/media/wilderness/NWPS/documents/Border Patrol MOU.pdf).
KBBW therefore is for cancellation of the contracts, and a recission of the waivers that allow CBP to build whatever border-related infrastructure they choose inside these ostensibly-federally protected areas. We are for the return to “normal” federal law which requires transparency, meaningful public involvement, and evaluation and mitigation of impacts to natural and cultural resources by federal agencies that are responsible to the citizens they serve.
KBBW supports a secure border, and we are for full staffing of border patrol agents in the park utilizing the housing and infrastructure that already exists, which can support 8 agents.
We are for continuous improvements to the wireless sensor system that is already in place in the park and surrounding areas. We support enhancements on the ground (and in the HIGH altitude above the park) provided they are wireless, unobtrusive, low impact, flexible – and necessary to improve security and do not further militarize the borderlands.
We are for the continued use by the border patrol of existing roads in the park, as they have done for years, and if necessary, minor improvements to River Road that improve its ability to withstand washouts but stop far short of paving, significant widening, the installation of buried or above-ground communication or power lines, or the installation of any sensors on towers or poles.
We are for unobstructed public use of the Rio Grande without barriers or gates.
We are for the permanent protection of the undeveloped lands of Big Bend National Park with an overlay designation of “wilderness,” which would prohibit any future development more intrusive than trails in the areas between existing NPS roads, and have no impact on any existing uses or users anywhere in the national park, including the Rio Grande.
We are for a federal legislation package that would inscribe into law the cancellation of the contracts, the recission of the waivers, the wilderness designation, and the requirement that any future plans for border infrastructure have to be explicitly authorized by a future congress and the prohibition of any legal waiver in the future.
And – importantly – we are for all of these border-related provisions to apply to the entire greater Big Bend region, from Fort Quitman to Amistad Dam. We are for as much local input as possible into security decisions that affect the livelihoods, economy, and quality of life of those who call this area home (as Let Texans Do Texas has proposed), while recognizing that border security and federal land management are ultimately national responsibilities.
Lastly, we are for a federal government that respects its citizens.
We think all of these are possible if we elect the right people this week, and we, the people, make it clear what we want the people we elect to actually do. VOTE!
Appreciation to everyone, especially local businesses, that have added your names to the Keep Big Bend Wild supporter list at keepbigbendwild.org/become-a-supporter.
