26 December 2016

“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He expresses himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest as a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” Albert Einstein

Alpine Animal Shelter. Whistler is an awesome 3-year-old schnauzer who was picked up on 12/9 as a stray, and he was a matted, dirty mess, indicating that he'd been out on his own, lost, for quite a while. But he cleaned up beautifully and was so happy for a bath and a grooming that he did a happy schnauzer dance. Despite having fallen on tough times, Whistler is a friendly, happy guy who loves attention and plays well with other dogs. He will be ready to go to a loving adopter as soon as he is neutered, and applications are being accepted now. For more information about Whistler, or any dog at the Alpine Animal Shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com.

Terlingua School District – Track UpdateWe have just finished repairing and surfacing the track. The sealant needs to cure until January 9, 2016. We are required to keep all foot traffic off the track until then.  Another crew will be out to complete the striping. Thank you for your patience with this whole project. We are very excited about creating and maintaining this new addition to our school. The maintenance requires that no wheeled vehicles including bicycles are allowed on the track. This will ensure the longevity of the track. We will have a grand opening when the striping is complete, and look forward to our students, staff, and community utilizing the track for fitness. The Big Bend Education Corporation has been responsible for providing the vast majority of the funding for the track. Special thanks to:  Anne Roberts, Marcos Paredes, Tommye Linan, and all past members of BBEC.

GRAND OPENING OF FOSSIL DISCOVERY EXHIBIT.  On January 14th, 2017, Big Bend Conservancy and Big Bend National Park will host a grand opening ceremony for the Fossil Discovery Exhibit. Replacing the previous Fossil Bone Exhibit, the Fossil Discovery Exhibit is a multi-room building where visitors can learn more about the 130 million years of geologic time represented in the park.  Specimens from Big Bend’s remarkable fossil record and full-color artwork help illustrate the fascinating story of Big Bend’s ancient life and changes to the ecosystems from ancient sea beds to volcanic savannahs. The Fossil Discovery Exhibit is the most significant addition to Big Bend National Park’s exhibits in the past 50 years.  The grand opening of this facility will include a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:00 AM, as well as games and giveaways for children.  Parking at the facility is limited, and visitors are asked to use a shuttle system that will be set up from the Chisos Basin.  Details regarding this free shuttle service will be posted on www.facebook.com/groups/bigbendfriends/, and www.nps.gov/bibe.

NEW GRANTS FOR WORK IN BIG BEND NATIONAL PARKOn December 15, 2016, Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell announced more than $350,000 in funding to engage youth and veterans in hands-on conservation projects in public lands.  The Texas Conservation Corps will receive $39,000 of these funds to work within Big Bend National Park. Over the summer of 2017, Big Bend National Park’s trail crew will partner with the Texas Conservation Corps to work on part of the maintenance backlog along the popular Window Trail within the Chisos Mountains.  Specifically, they aim to replace many of the cross-trail structures to improve tread and reduce erosion, making the trail more sustainable. The Window Trail was built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps.  Over a five-mile round-trip distance, it brings visitors down to a canyon, sculpted as rains have slowly drained along this path.  This remains one of the most popular trails for its scenery and opportunity to see wildlife.

Meet Marley!
Marley is a slender, young adult black lab mix who was surrendered to the shelter. He is mild-mannered and gets along with everyone - big or little, male or female, confident or submissive. Marley walks very well on a leash though you can tell it’s new to him. He likes to put his paws in the doggie pool and may discover he’s a full-fledged water dog. Marley is quiet and well-behaved in his kennel. He appears to be totally housebroken. In the security of a loving home, Marley will continue to shine! For more information about Marley, or any dog at the Alpine Animal Shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com.
