Please respond to john Waters at the Gazette at publisher@bigbendgazette.com by Saturday, July 30 9:00 am. BURN BAN IN EFFECT -- Brewster County Commissioners Court voted this morning to put the burn ban in effect for Brewster County.  This burn ban prohibits the outdoor burning of trash, debris, and brush in the unincorporated area of the county for 90 days.  Currently, there is a large amount of grasses and other light fuels that are drying out in the area.  The Keetch-Byram Drought Index puts the county at an average rating of 505 out of 800, high means dry. http://bigbendgazette.com/2016/07/26/brewster-county-burn-ban-in-effect

!!! VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE  !!!
SB Water Corp. says that one of the wells/pumps has gone out and they are running on one SMALL well.  Please strongly advise the local public to use water extremely conservatively until further notice.

UPDATE:  Study Butte Water - Update - just spoke to Paula at the water company. She said to please share the following. The motor on the pump (on the larger well) is dead and will have to be replaced, and according to the people working on the well, it could take several weeks to a month to get a new one in. They are asking people to conserve water as the currently operating well only pumps about 1/3 the volume of the larger one. So - no car washing, turn off the water to soap up while showering, no long showers, don't let the water run while brushing your teeth or washing dishes, etc., etc. They have put up notices at the various restaurants, stores, and the post office and she said they will begin calling customers tomorrow. For people who buy water to haul, they will probably be limiting the amount that you can get.

Terlingua has lost a long-time resident, friend and beautiful soul: Mozelle Jeffrey died this week on Saturday morning, July 22, 2016, in North Carolina, due to heart-related health issues. Please join us in our condolences to her family and all her friends, and let us share in our grieving with memories of her presence in our community. Mozelle donated her body to scientific research. There will be a memorial planned for this fall in Terlingua, and more information will be available later.

Marfa Live Arts will bring back Pachanga, a community talent show, On Sat. AUG 27th, emceed by Junie Villarreal, at the Marfa Visitor Center USO hall at 7:30pm. All ages are welcome. All Marfa Live Arts; programming is free and open to the community. Musicians, actors, performance artists, comedians, singers, contortionists, dancers, or rappers: if you’ve got an act up your sleeve, come on out. Please send an email with your name, contact info and type of act to ccschrim@marfalivearts.org for submission.

Ronald Steinmann needs a live-in house sitter for Sept.3 -Sept 10th to take care of the house, greenhouse, 2 outside vegetable gardens and some small fruit trees along with 20 laying chickens. Misters and sprinklers set up for gardens need to be turned on and off morning and evening. There is a room A.C. in the main bedroom and central air. Eggs and all veggies available for an individual(s) during this time period and as added incentive an upright Kenmore freezer which runs good, is clean with no rust and I haven't been using, for a RESPONSIBLE individual willing to make sure that I don't come back to dead chickens and gardens. If interested call 371-2328 or email steinmannronald@gmail.com for directions to the property on upper Ross Drive. P.S. I can't offer any money since I use the gardens and chicken eggs to augment a meager S.S. check!

Terlingua Recycles! This Thursday, July 21, it's our monthly recycling run from Terlingua to the Recycling Station in Big Bend National Park. Jim and Barbara Hines will once again be pulling the recycling trailer into the Park and we could still use a few other volunteers to help us unload at the station and give a couple of hours back to Park in their efforts toward recycling. The recycling trailer is located behind the EMS station on 170 (between Terlingua and Study Butte). We'll pull out of there shortly after 8 and should be back around 1. You're welcome to ride with one of the other volunteers or drive yourself. The recycling station is located near Panther Junction (if you drive yourself and need to head back earlier than the rest of the crew, no problem. Every little bit helps)!  We'd like to thank everyone who's jumped on this wagon and helped with the recycling efforts - using the correct bins, rinsing items before putting them into the bins, sorting, getting the word out and more. If you'd like more information, email Jeff at draftexllc@gmail.com or send a message via Terlingua Recycles Facebook page.

Your TANK(s) are on the way.  Call our home # 2506 so we can get and give you specifics about when, where and how. The cell # isn't reliable for messages, but the home phone is or email elcentro432@gmail.com

Big Bend Episcopal Mission will have Holy Eucharist at 4:00 pm on Saturday, July 17 at the Chapel of Saints Mary and Joseph in Lajitas. All are welcome.

SPAMALOT  This weekend and next are the last two weekends for "Monty Python's Spamalot" at the Kokernot Outdoor Theatre in Alpine. The musical production, based on the movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," will be performed July 17-19 and 24-26 starting at 8:15pm for all performances. The summer production marks the 50th anniversary of the Theatre of the Big Bend. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. Bring a chair and maybe a light sweater; Alpine has cooler evenings than we do!

The truckload of Wylie Rainwater Catchment Tanks  (the gold and guaranteed standard) has stalled just short of a full, freight-free load.  You may have already missed several hundreds of gallons of precious water.  Newer locals might not be aware that severe droughts here have been known to go on for months and even years. Water wells DO go dry and will again. Call us for specs and prices 371-2506 or email elcentro432@gmail.com (our cell phone (512)#  is not reliable at this time).

Tobuscus aka Toby is a mellow, medium energy, extremely friendly mastiff-pit bull mix. He loves the tennis ball. He fetches, catches, and retrieves! Toby came in with two other dogs and seems to get along with everyone. He may have had some training as he does some very cute things hoping for treats or affection. He’d think he was in heaven to have a giant chew toy with a treat inside. Toby is housebroken, sweet as can be, and would be a great family pet. He will be neutered and available for adoption on 7/19. He is micro chipped, up to date on all shots, and about two years old. All Alpine shelter animals are online at https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=TX1202 and for more info about any of them:heatherthemule@gmail.com  See Toby’s PIC.

When the 22nd annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America  visited Terlingua and Lajitas earlier this spring, the local community revved up to support the cause! With their help, the Ride raised more than $1 million, continuing its position as the top cumulative donor to Victory Junction.
Led by former NASCAR driver and NBC Analyst Kyle Petty, the Ride took 200 bikers on a 2,150-mile route to raise funds and awareness for Victory Junction – a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. As a result of this year’s Ride alone, 100 children will attend camp at no cost to their families.
Since 1995, more than 7,950 riders have logged more than 11.6 million cumulative motorcycle miles and raised $17.5 million for Victory Junction and other children’s charities.

"Do each of these things for a half-hour at least once a day and you're sure to have a healthy, happy life. Get the blood really pumping. Let the sun shine directly on your skin. Express yourself to someone. Be creative. Stretch. Close your eyes and breathe deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth while letting your mind rest. Think of the good things in your life. Turn off the cellphone and close the computer. Go for a walk. Write something down...anything.” Mark “Eyeball” Kneeskern
