Boss is a one-year-old male pit bull mix who wandered up to a home in Marathon as a stray.  The homeowners loved him but had plenty of dogs already, so he's at the Alpine animal shelter waiting for a loving adopter who does have room for him in their life.  He is a sweet and playful dog, and while he's sometimes a little nervous about meeting new dogs, his favorite dog playmates seem to be littler than him....  Boss has shown respect for cats when walked through the cat area on a leash.  Most of all though, Boss ADORES human company and comes running when called.  For more information about Boss or any animal in the Alpine animal shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com

TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE
March 2, 2017 5:30 PM
Come celebrate the 181 anniversary of state
Texas Independence from Mexico with the annual impromptu parade between the High Sierra and The Porch celebrating the sacrifices of those who won our freedom that has been so easily forgotten by native Texans and unknown by the naturalized and visitors. The parade is scheduled to begin around 5:30 P.M. (but is notoriously late) at Herman’s Garage of Classic Cars. The route will leave for the porch, circle around to the High Sierra, then turn around back to Herman’s. Gathering for the parade will be at any time necessary for the preparation of your “float” to make the 5:30 start. For the first time, this year there will be a trophy awarded for the best float by High Sierra and ONE F*R*E*E B*E*E*R donated by Penni & Rush Warren. Woohoo! Please try to attend with a float, or just as a spectator. What the hell, what else do you have to do?

*On the subject of water and rain harvesting, below are some commonly asked questions regarding rain catchment and the law:
Are there any tax incentives for installing a rainwater harvesting system?

Under Texas Constitution, Article 8, §1-m, the Texas Legislature may authorize a taxing unit to grant an exemption from property tax for property on which a water conservation initiative has been implemented. In Texas Tax Code §11.32, the Texas Legislature allows governmental taxing units the option to exempt from taxation part or all of the assessed value of property on which water conservation initiatives are made. The taxing entity designates by ordinance or law the eligible water conservation initiatives, which may include rainwater harvesting systems. Individuals planning to install rainwater harvesting systems should check with their respective county appraisal districts for guidance on exemption from county property taxes.

In addition, Texas Tax Code §151.355 exempts rainwater harvesting equipment and supplies from state sales tax.

It is a fallacy that there is an over-abundance of water available for our use in the state. The population of Texas is expected to double over the next 50 years and existing surface water and groundwater resources are being depleted. Already, there are places in Texas that are experiencing shortages because demands are greater than available supplies. Rainwater harvesting provides us an opportunity to conserve and extend our existing resources.

Sec. 365.012. ILLEGAL DUMPING

Did you know?
If you dump your trash in a dumpster you don’t pay for, it may me illegal.  Dumping in a private dumpster that is contracted to a residence, a business or is shared by payers   5- 500 lbs is a Class B misdemeanor.

Littering is against the law and you can be fined up to $500 for trash weighing more than 5 pounds or amounting to 5 gallons and less than 500 pounds.  You may have to also serve jail time not more than 30 days.  In certain situations, if you have been previously convicted for illegal dumping, your vehicle might be confiscated, as well.
Penal Code 31.04 HSC 365.012 The unauthorized use of another persons dumpster, including the unauthorized use of a business dumpster is a crime.

 However: Repeat the offense, and you could face a fine of up to $2,000 and 180 days in jail.

It gets worse.
In Texas, failing to cover your pickup-truck load is against the law and carries a fine of up to $200 for the first offense and $500 for repeat offenders.

Any law enforcement officer in Texas can enforce these laws.

Any person who without authorization dumps garbage or trash, or assists in the unauthorized dumping of garbage or trash, in a dumpster or other solid waste container which is located on the property of another person and leased or otherwise owned or maintained by another

And, then there is this:

If you have lived in South County less than five years you might not know that extreme heat, electrical outages, water, rain scarcity and dirt roads are part of the norm here. Some folks adapt as best they can and stay for decades.

However; fast drivers on our dirt and gravel roads cause a preventable hardship for us all.  Besides driving 30 mph or more is not legal on County unimproved roads and the danger of head-on collisions at even lower speeds is an ever present danger.  When you encounter near impassible washboard roads, honestly ask yourself if YOU are contributing to the problem. Plowing through on a mud road after a rain is the worst.  Please consider that not everyone can afford to have their vehicle beaten to bits by thoughtless, fast drivers. And please consider the almost impossible job the County and Ranch maintenance workers have to deal with.

The 7th annual Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest hosted over 500 riders and led dozens of guided rides, all to benefit the Big Bend Trails Alliance. 95 riders tackled the 60 mile IMBA epic in one day. Many thanks to Desert Sports, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Big Bend National Park and Lajitas Resort for their coordinated efforts to make this event a giant success!  Big Bend Valley Volunteer Fire Department (BBVVFD) volunteers Michael “Tanner” Adamson and Tim “BDaddy” Shirley completed their basic training as wildland firefighters at the 19th annual Fort Davis Mile-High Wildfire Academy sponsored by the Texas A&M Forest Service (TFS) and hosted by the Fort Davis Volunteer Fire Department last week.
Officially entitled “S-130/190 L180 ICS 100 Basic Wildland”, the course ran from Thursday February 9th through Sunday February 12th.  It encompassed both S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior and S-130 Firefighter Training and included classroom education with written examinations as well as field exercises with full personal protective equipment (PPE) such as firefighting equipment orientation, fireline construction and fire shelter deployment.
The Wildfire Academy was orchestrated by TFS Regional Fire Coordinator Robert Poenisch.  Lead instructors for the course were TFS Assistant Chief Regional Fire Coordinator Jeff Meiner and TFS Task Force Coordinator Terry Jones, supported by TFS Resource Specialist Kevin Daly and other members of the TFS Trans-Pecos Task Force.  Training facilities and participant meals were provided by the 32-member Fort Davis Volunteer Fire Department.
The Big Bend Valley Volunteer Fire Department was founded by Hampton “Lee” Penland, who serves as its Fire Chief.  The BBVVFD Fire Hall is located just off Texas Highway 118 at Jackass Flats, about 60 miles south of Alpine and 20 miles north of Terlingua/Study Butte, south of the Cowboy Mining Company, north of Terlingua Ranch Lodge, east of American Legion Post 653 and west of WLWeb.US at 321 Legion Road.
The Big Bend Valley Volunteer Fire Department is funded solely by donations and welcomes any and all contributions.  The BBVVFD is also recruiting volunteers and invites all those interested in protecting the people and property of the Big Bend Valley region to attend their regularly scheduled meetings held on the second Wednesday of every month at 5:00pm CDT.  Learn more by logging onto their website at https://BigBendValleyVFD.org or http://BBVVFD.US.

Dory is a 10-month old jack russell terrier mix. She arrived at the shelter on Feb 4 very fearful and timid. We think she may have had some kind of trauma, and she requires an adopter who understands the patient but rewarding work required to help fearful dogs live a normal life. Dory looks forward to a second chance at a life in which she's much loved and treated like a queen. Shelter animal adoption fees include spay/neuter, all vaccines, and a microchip. Best of all, adopting from the shelter rescues a homeless pet from our community and provides them the family that they need! How dare the rest of the United States of America expect Texas to give up access for cattle, irrigation, wildlife and or recreational use of the Rio Grande river.  Building a WALL down that border would cut Texans off from a much needed water source.  And landowners will give up use of a lot of land (that they pay taxes on) in order to build the WALL out of the flood plain. Name one WALL throughout the history of mankind that worked for more than a very short period of time.  Even WALLS where people were shot at (is this where we are headed?) for trying to cross, were breached regularly.  Saying a WALL will cut off 99.9% of all traffic is a bold face lie, Mr. President...(the Emperor has no clothes!)   And what about the Canadian border???  Talk about porous...1 in 36 people in Canada are Muslims...over 1 million.  You can not say that about Mexico.  Isn't it truly a case of "Mexiphobia"?  Don't people realize Mexico won't pay for this, we the consumer will pay for the construction, whether it's higher priced food (tomatoes, avocados,etc.), or cars, or whatever, the added tax will be passed on to we the people, the majority of whom don't wish to see this WALL to begin with. The billions of wasted dollars (not pesos) spent on a "band-aid"" for the problem, could and should be spent on education, on all levels and on both sides of the border.  Congress needs to step up and pass a comprehensive work program for much needed laborers, and safe passage from country to country.
  The bottom line, the terrorist's acts that have taken place here in America have been caused by people in our country legally or where folks from right here in the USA.  Now balance that with the cost of the WALL...
   Remember, those Saudi Arabians on 9/11 flew out of Boston, not San Antonio or El Paso...let's stop this madness!   Please contact your elected officials and make your voice heard.  For an area whose only industry is tourism, this eyesore will hurt business, affecting everyone.

We will march down hwy 67 toward the international bridge (on the sidewalks) and then march up O'Reilly street to Presidio City Hall, where we will join together as a community and in peace and friendship to show solidarity against the immigrant ban and the proposed wall in the Big Bend !  Editor’s Note: Realizing it is Valentine’s week and considered, by some, to be solely a commercial endeavor . . . a few notes. Valentine’s Day was commemorated as far back as the Middle Ages although the first known written valentines weren’t sent until the 1400s. There are myriad stories about Valentine’s Day and its origin and history.com (search for Valentine’s Day) has some interesting information. All of that aside, let’s remember – in the words of Butch Hancock – to love everybody, every day, no exceptions.

Alpine Animal Shelter. Goose is a 1.5-year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. He has that very distinct reverse-ridge of hair along his back. He is a lovely and sweet large dog of 55 pounds and is wonderful with both kids and cats. He has been a family pet for most of his life already, but had to be surrendered when the family moved into housing without any yard space for him. Goose loves to run and play with other dogs, and is very easy going with people too. He will become Pet of the Week on Thursday, with a reduced adoption fee. West Texas Water Protectors update
The fundraiser for the West Texas Water Protectors that was going to be on Sunday, February 26 at La Kiva has been postponed. I appreciate so much the many offers to help play and support this event. Do you like to go to national parks?
The cost to enter Big Bend NP is currently $12/person or $25/vehicle. But if you’re 62 or older and a US citizen or Permanent Resident, you qualify to purchase a lifetime Senior Pass that is good for all US national parks. At this time, the Senior Pass costs $10 in person at a park or $20 if processing by mail. After June, this price will increase to $80 for the lifetime senior pass and $20 for an annual pass, under the National Park Service Centennial Act recently passed by Congress. Buy your senior pass today.

Chocolate, Wine, and Coffee: A Love Story, a tasting fund-raiser benefiting Alpine Public Library on Valentine’s Day, February 14, from 6 PM until 7 PM in the AEP Foundation Multipurpose Room. The tasting will include exotic chocolates paired with complementing wine for a mouth-watering experience. Samples of coffee from a variety of roasters will follow. Taste a chocolate you like? Bars will be auctioned off at the end of the evening. Tickets are $10 per person for Friends of the Alpine Public Library and $12.50 per person for nonmembers. Terlingua Community Garden
This past Wednesday, Terlingua Community Garden hosted the very first Taste Our Local Flavor, locally sourced dinner of chicken tortilla soup with a side of deviled eggs, quiches and biscuits with jam.  To create the full meal, 20+ people provided over 25 different ingredients that were grown or raised here in Terlingua. 4 things were sourced from the greater Texas and New Mexico region and just a couple (like salt) were from outside sources. It was a wonderful celebration of what the community can do when we put our individual resources together.  The next dinner will be in May and we would love to encourage more folks to participate. Get your creative juices flowing now! Think cabrito with a root veggie bake, prickly pear wine and peach cobbler, or quail sausage on a bed of steamed greens, squash cassarole, honey mesquite cookies and homebrewed beer.  Together we can make it happen.

Thanks to the community for their continued recycling effort. Just a reminder that if you bring your recyclables in plastic bags please empty the plastic bags and take them with you. We can’t recycle plastic bags. With the addition of the new trailer to haul cardboard, we’ve been able to open an additional bin for aluminum. So we now have bins for: cardboard, tin, plastic, paper products, and aluminum. Glass is in the works!! If you have any questions or want more info about volunteering, call 830.739.6986.

Historic Terlingua Buildings Tour
Last Minute Low Budget Productions is planning our first tour of historic Terlingua buildings.  On Saturday, February 11, we will be touring the Perry Mansion, overlooking the Ghostown, that Bill Ivey is turning into a rustic but modern guest house.  We will also be going to the Villa de la Mina to see Blair Pittman’s cabin and look around the old mine site.  Transportation and guides will be provided, and there will be a social hour with refreshments afterward.  We plan to do one tour at 1 p.m. and a second at 3 p.m.  To register, please use bourbon@bigbend.net or call 432-386-3178 with the number in your party and a contact phone number.  Cost will be $20 per person.  More information will be forthcoming, and some details may change.  Please let us know ASAP of your interest in joining this tour.

Memorial Gathering for Zuzu Verk

Meet BUBBA
Bubba is a two-year-old male Australian shepherd mix who looks bigger than his 41 pounds. Bubba is quite new to the shelter and seems very easy-going. It takes him a little time to join in play with the other dogs but he gets along with everyone. He passes the cat test too! Bubba seems largely content to do his own thing perhaps because as a stray he may have been doing his own thing for quite a while. We’re hoping someone will make him theirs!! A free “Your Heart, Your Life” community health education series is being hosted by the Big Bend Valley Volunteer Fire Department (BBVVFD) at 5:00pm every Wednesday from January 11th through March 22nd 2017. This slower paced, hour-long class is done mostly in chairs and is designed for everyBODY. There is an emphasis on breathing, gentle movement and body awareness. This class is excellent for those of us with mobility, balance or breathing issues!

Are When You Cross Them by Melvin Shaffer will be presented at the Cinnabar Theater at 8:00 PM on Friday and Saturday, February 3rd &4th, with a closing matinee on Sunday, February 5th at 2:00 PM. 

We are Terlingua Proud of our newest and youngest actors!!  Don't miss seeing Grace Sullivan, Amos Duffy, and Luna Hood make the Cinnabar stage their own.   Ollie Young and Scott Watkins have great "parental chemistry" while Pablo Menudo and Chris Lee help to round things out.  We are delighted to have the Lowe Sisters, Brittany & Sierra, back on stage after a too-long absence and Billy Miller does double-duty as both actor & director.

Terlingua Recycles and we appreciate you! We made the largest delivery yet into the recycling center in Big Bend National Park this past week. It took Jim & Barbara Hines pulling the bins themselves plus another trailer pulled by a volunteer and two full pickup beds. It's great that the community continues to help this program grow while making our footprint smaller. 

A few little tricks will help a lot! Be sure to break down cardboard as compactly as you can. Please step on milk cartons to crush them as much as possible. Remember than tin is not the same as aluminum; there's a bin for each. We really appreciate everyone doing such a good job in cleaning/ rinsing out recyclables. Sure makes the job that much easier for the volunteers at sorting time. 

We try to do a good job of keeping things in order at The Terlingua Recycling station (located behind the Terlingua EMS) but if you ever notice something out of line, drop us a Facebook message and we'll get on it as soon as possible. As this endeavor continues to grow and gain momentum, we could use some more volunteers to help us keep up. Send us a FB message or email draftexllc@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Doodle arrived at the shelter on 1/18 as a stray dog. What kind of dog is she? We’re taking suggestions! Bernese mountain and husky mix is maybe right. What we DO know is that Doodle is about a year old, sweet as pie, and a lover of all dogs and people She enjoys play group exactly as much as she loves pets and attention. She is spayed, vaccinated and up to date on all her shots. Less than two weeks now until Slim Fest tWo! February 9 - 12 at The Starlight Theatre. The Open Mic on the 9th is now a "controlled burn" to help make sure all those who wanted to play have a slot.  Thursday night at The Starlight remains free of charge and the restaurant and bar are open as usual. Slim Richey was a world-class musician and fellow Terlingua resident who died all too soon in 2015. Slim Fest tWo is a celebration of what would have been his 79th birthday and the line-up of musicians who will be playing the festival is out of this world in true Slim fashion. Grammy-nominated Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum, Wood & Wire, Greezy Wheels, Katie Shore (of Asleep at the Wheel); Doug Moreland & The Flying Armadillos; Country Fool's Gold, The Paper Moonshiners and, of course, Slim's own Jitterbug Vipers. We've had people buy tickets from California, New Mexico, Colorado, Michigan and, of course, all across Texas to catch these great musicians as we honor Slim's legacy and party under the stars!

The Starlight will be exclusive to Slim Fest on Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th and tickets are available at www.faroutbooking.com (click on Viva Slim) - $75 for the entire weekend or $40 per night.  Sunday will feature an Open Mic/ Gospel Brunch and The Starlight will again be open to all - no charge for the music.

Brewster County Commissioners Court will have a called meeting on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 10:00am in the Red Patillo Community Center. Please come!  Also, on Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 9:00am-3:00pm the county will host a Clean-Up Day at the county yard on River Road. SOUTH BREWSTER COUNTY—This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will see the last performances of One Room, Two Stories, two one-act plays that comprise Last Minute Low Budget Productions’ first offering of 2017.  Despite a cold wind that accompanied the January 27 Opening Gala, the almost full house had a wonderful time, with lots of laughs, some of them intentional.

The two dramas take place in the same San Francisco hotel room but at different times.  Billy Miller directs and also stars with his wife, Brittany, as his wife, in Room on Floor One by Belle E. London, a suspense story.  Scott Watkins, LMLB’s president, heads a family group on vacation in Bridges …Are When You Cross Them by Melvin Shaffer, a comedy.

The dramatis personae also include Sierra Lowe, Chris Lee, Pablo Menudo, and first-time LMLB actors Ollie Young, Grace Sullivan, Amos Duffy, and Luna Hood.

Curtain time is 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.  There will be an intermission of about 20 minutes between the two plays, a time when the concession stand usually does a lively business.

Last Minute Low Budget Productions is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) community theater group that began putting on plays in the Terlingua area in 1989.  The all-volunteer cast and crew hail from the area.   All tax-exempt donations are much appreciated.
