SADIE MAE is a 6-year-old lab/hound mix who is as chill and affectionate as they come.  Nothing makes her happier than spending time with people and other dogs. SADIE doesn’t have the energy for rowdy games of play, but she’s delighted to mill around and wag her tail when it’s happening around her.  She has a knack for the tennis ball and appreciates games of fetch. She is great at returning affection by leaning against you. Whether she was lost or abandoned, SADIE is a dog who misses home life and a devoted owner. She hopes that she can start 2016 with a new family that loves her forever. SADIE is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all shots. The answers, if they can be found anywhere, lie in the weird communal fabric of Terlingua, where solitude is not solitary and the shared struggle for survival achieves the motley grace of a desert parade.

GORDY is a 72-pound lap dog.  This super-sweet, giant-headed male brindle pit bull is 3 years old and gets along great with dogs of all ages and sizes, and every person he meets, too.  He can run and play with the best of them, but he can also lean against you wagging his tail, or preferably sit on your lap, definitely not realizing his size.  Probably if you laid down on his dog bed he’d spoon with you immediately.  Everyone at the shelter loves this big guy and he will happily fit into a household where he’s involved in everyone’s activities.  GORDY is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all shots. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road.

RAYDAR was in the Moon back in the beginning of September and this special little guy is still at the Shelter…. He is currently Alpine’s longest-sheltered dog resident, and has been waiting for his happy home since July. Even though there are younger and perhaps cuter dogs in the shelter, there’s no other dog like RAYDAR. RAYDAR is a little terrier mix with an immediately endearing personality. He’s friendly with everyone (people and dogs), listens well and barely barks. He’s 8 years old and 28 lbs, and loves to walk and prance around with his toys. Despite his age, he’s spry and spunky. RAYDAR is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all shots. Nine times out of ten, he is standing on top of his doghouse when you pass by, which says a lot about his personality. He’s social with dogs and other people, loves to run around and keep an eye on everything and feels entitled to get involved wherever you are. THE DUDE is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all shots. He weighs 17 pounds and is full-grown. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. Wise Words
Kindness begets kindness. It’s contagious. It multiplies exponentially when shared. It is free - and while you are paying it forward kindness is paying back dividends to you. With changed attitudes towards our fellow man, perhaps, just maybe, positive interactions become contagious and we can tip the balance. Although a simple concept, the trick is going to be in the spreading of the word. I challenge you, my friends, to be kind to one another, volunteer, smile to a stranger, lend a hand when and where you can. In short, be nice. Be kind. It is possible to change this world for the better, one act of kindness at a time. Kindness immediately makes changes for you and those around you. With the rush to the end of the year, the demands of our daily lives, and the heart-breaking news events we can forget the power of kindness to create joy, ease anxiety and depression, increase happiness and promote peace.” ~Lorelei Maria Freiler

UPDATE/POSTPONEMENT: Terlingua Public Library's next presentation with Marlys Hersey, founder of Far Out Hooping in Alpine, an evening of fun with hoops, originally scheduled for Thu. Nov. 19 at 6 pm, has been postponed because Marlys will be having surgery next week and needs to recover fully before she can get her hoop on and whoop it up with y'all at the library. Please join us to Thursday, January 21 @ 6 pm for an evening of hoopiness. Improve your health and well being; join us in using the hoop to take us through a full range of motion, loosening our spines, stretching and strengthening our muscles, improving our balance, and increasing our joy with this portable and inexpensive toy. Have a hoop? Bring it. Or borrow one of Marlys'. Male, female, young, not so young, tall, short, thin, or wanting to slim down a bit: this is a program for everyone. That toy you enjoyed as a child can be a great means to fitness, community-building, and a daily movement practice. Marlys Hersey is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Hoop Love Coach, and Hoola-Fit Instructor. Terlingua Public Library is located on the campus of Terlingua Common School District. All programs are free and open to the public.

Young, healthy and highly athletic, this happy dog will make a wonderful family pet or companion for an active person willing to take their dog everywhere. SPECKLES loves to play ball and is good with other dogs (but is truly man's or woman's best friend material)! TERLINGUA MOON

Vol 26. No. 46

November 10, 2015

“In the desert I had found a freedom unattainable in civilization; a life unhampered by possessions, since everything that was not a necessity was an encumbrance. I had found too, a comradeship inherent in the circumstances, and the belief that tranquility was to be found there.”

― Wilfred Thesiger

Tipsy was a rescue puppy. She was born in Feb. 2014. My son lives in California with his father and needs much more support at this time in his life than I can provide so far away. I need the ability to go back and forth between here and California and when gone be away for longer periods of time. My husband is over committed with multiple and varied obligations and can not possibly add her care to his already overextended schedule. She is very sweet. Two different vets have said that she looks quite a bit like a greyhound. Her behavior is that of a sight hound (which means she is quick to chase things that move) so she needs to be walked and/or somewhere there is a fence. (She will run off.) She also needs to be in a home where someone can spend time with her (even exercise her) as she still has some puppy in her. She is use to living with another dog. She has not had any exposure to cats. She has been spayed and is up to date on all her shots. She does sleep in a crate at night but is just as happy to sleep out on the floor. If you (or someone you know) might be able to provide her a good temporary home (all food and vet costs will be paid for) please call me at (432) 371-2263 or email seagullcaller@mac.com. If fostering does not become available by mid-December, I will explore permanent placement.

SKY is a beautiful Husky who was rescued from the streets and is hoping someone will give him a chance to be a proper pet. He has a few things still to learn and is slowly rebuilding trust after what was clearly a tough time for him while he was on his own. SKY has had some experience with dogs and cats and loves water. He is about 60 pounds and not quite yet two years old. Come pay this striking guy a visit! SKY is housebroken, neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all shots. His adoption fee is $100. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. All AAS animals are online at https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=TX1202 For more info email heatherthemule@gmail.com
