All Energies Tip of the Week: Properly grounding your home can reduce the chance of damage from lightning, and will increase your personal safety. Even if lightning doesn’t strike your home directly, nearby lightning can cause a static electric charge to build up on the metal of electrical items such as refrigerators, microwaves and solar panels (just to name a few). The metal frames of electrical items are connected to ground, and the static charge can be drained off through an earth ground.  Most earth grounds are copper-clad ground rod(s) or copper plates buried in the dirt. Unfortunately, dry dirt makes for poor grounding, a common issue in here in Far West Texas. A very good grounding technique for dry areas is an Ufer Ground. You can create and Ufer Ground by connecting a wire to the network of rebar in a concrete slab. If you need help making your solar system work better, email casey@allenergies.net or call/text 432-242-1874

Thank you, Terlingua for another spectacular GREEN SCENE Festival! We had a wonderful weekend full of demonstrations, face painting, art, music, food, and fun! Thank you, Lisa and Bill Ivey, the Starlight Crew, and Far Out Booking for your unwavering support of the Community Garden and the GREEN SCENE. We couldn't do this without you! Thank you, David and Kay Crum for your continued support. Thank you, demonstrators for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Robert, Timmy, Casey, Kelon, Tonia, Ross, and Leralee -- all of your demos were AWESOME and I'm so glad you volunteered! Thank you Big Bend Ranch State Park for the enLIGHTening information on dark skies, light pollution, sustainability and so much more. Thank you Big Bend National Park and Ranger Tracy Coe for your constellation tour of the stars over the Ghost Town. Thank you Steve McAllister, for sharing your amazing telescope with us. Thank you BBRSP Ambassador Chelsey Borris, and Annalise Reichert from the TPWD Sustainability Branch. Thank you JD Newsome, from Big Bend Conservation Alliance. Thank you, Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Council for your help to promote our 11th annual Festival of Sustainability and Creativity. Thank you donors, who provided so many great items for our charity auction and raffle. Thank you, Paul for auctioneering for us! The funds we raised this weekend will help carry the Community Garden through another year of planting, projects, and educational programs. And I would like to personally thank the amazing volunteers who help turn an IDEA into a REALITY: Zoey, Casey, Amber, Tim G, Tonia, Ross, Joselyn, Robert K, Jeff M, Jenny, Molly, and Arick. I hope I'm not forgetting anyone but if I am, please forgive me! Thank you all so much for all your hard work over the past several months! 💚💚💚💚💚-Sara

All Energies Tip of the Week: The correct wire gauge will make your solar system work better and safer. A good analogy for an electrical circuit is comparing it to water. Voltage is similar to water pressure and amperage is similar to gallons per minute.  The right size wire, is easily calculated on the web using services such as; calculator.net voltage drop calculator. Higher currents or amps require thicker wire, you want 5% or less voltage drop at full current. Battery interconnects and inverter to battery bank wires tend to be between 1/0 and 4/0 multi strand copper wire. Charge controller to battery bank wires are anywhere from 12 AWG and to 2 AWG copper wire.  If you need help making your solar system work better, email casey@allenergies.net or call/text 432-242-1874.

History of U.S. Public Lands presentation October 30th, Red Patillo Community Center 5:00
This is an excellent program about the history of America’s public lands.
If you want to learn how it came to be that the U.S. has substantial public lands in some states and not in others...then you will learn a lot from this non-political presentation.

She, along with her sister, Felicity Rose, and their mama, Janey Lake, will be gathering with friends and family to lay a stone for Fromholz on Saturday, November 9th in the Terlingua Cemetery, probably around 4 pm. There will be a second-line to follow, some light libations and such as well.
Additionally, performing at the Starlight that night will be Dan McCrimmon, dad’s partner in Frummox, as well as Craig Hillis of the Lost Austin band, as well as others TBA. More information will be provided as the date nears, so mark your calendar.

All Energies Tip of the Week
Proper battery watering will help your bank last longer and produce less mess. Most of the batteries in the Big Bend are the flooded lead acid type, which means they require maintenance. These batteries contain Sulfuric Acid, often referred to as electrolyte which is about 30% acid and 70% water. The water in the electrolyte is lost over time and needs to be replenished. Check the electrolyte approximately every 30 days. Batteries will consume more water in warmer months and older batteries need the electrolyte checked more often. ALWAYS wear safety glasses and gloves when adding distilled water! NEVER have an open flame, spark, or lit cigarette around your batteries. Use a flashlight with a narrow beam to look at the liquid level in the cell. The electrolyte level in the battery needs to be above the plates and below the recessed well. Don’t worry about spilling distilled water on top of the batteries, since pure water is a poor electrical conductor. Bring the electrolyte level to about one-quarter inch below the bottom of the cell well, or about 1.25” below the top of the battery, do not overfill. If you need help making your solar system work better, email casey@allenergies.net or call/text 432-242-1874.

Earth and Fire Gallery
Opening Party for this month’s Guest Artist, Linda Walker, Saturday at 5:30 PM.
“When we travel we sometimes get lucky and find those local artists whose works are not only unique, but exceptional. Particularly in emerging nations many of these artists are unable to bring their talents and products to a larger audience. My husband and I traveled to Guatemala this summer on a medical mission/vacation that morphed into a buying trip for unique art and stupendous textiles.  Know that a fair price was paid for all this work - we believe in supporting these artists in the small studios and homes where they create these pieces. we hope you will enjoy both the artwork/textile and knowing you were helping to keep their dreams alive” — Linda Walker
