CANDLES TO REMEMBER THOSE WE HAVE LOST
With The Day of the Dead, right around the corner, Big Bend Literary Magazine would like to offer a free service for those who have lost loved ones and would like a candle lit in their memory. Candles will be lighted and placed in the Terlingua Ghost Town. To participate, please leave a memorial for your loved one on our Day of the Dead memorial page, found at the bottom of our exclusive online feature by Jennifer Pittinger and Markus Manstroma. Memorials will be read as candles are lit. Our team plans on recording this project and sharing it for posterity.

Please consider leaving a tip in our Tip Jar to help with this project and others! The Tip Jar is found at the bottom of every page of our website and digital issue. ??

https://www.bigbendliterary.com/issues/issue-one/day-of-the-dead

For those concerned about littering, rest assured, we WILL clean up after ourselves. We also are committed to preserving the local people's sacred holiday and will treat the area and people with respect. We hope this project will allow those who can no longer attend to still participate in this ritual.

CELL TOWER ISSUES
Finally!  Verizon and piggyback carriers apparently are starting to recognise that service issues are caused by the Terlingua cell tower. The last few months, mobile/cell users have experienced continuous problems with calling out, receiving messages, and other untimely feature failures. Verizon says they are now working to correct the tower problem causing these issues (the timing suggests a possibly related to ATT's service enhancements).  There's no time commitment to restore full services yet; only a general promise within the next few weeks. Consider contacting your carrier with requests for credit for your paying for services not rendered, e.g., calling, texting, voicemail & hotspot. Good luck! from local South Brewster County Advocates.

Terlingua Moon
Volume 32, No. 42
October 19, 2021 by FreeBird

If I had to choose, I would rather have birds than aeroplanes.  ‑‑ Charles Lindbergh

Are you a birder?  Do you share your sightings only on Facebook?  While Facebook has lots of birding groups, the sightings shared there, stop there.  eBird, managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, is a collaborative enterprise with hundreds of partner organizations, thousands of regional experts and hundreds of thousands of users, worldwide.  eBird data, archived daily and freely accessible to anyone has been used in conservation decisions, peer-reviewed papers, student projects, and helps inform bird research worldwide.  It is used to track bird populations and how they change through time.  So, while it’s great to share your sightings with your FB friends, don’t forget to also share on eBird and contribute to the growing database of bird populations.  And, if you aren’t a birder (but I bet you are . . . it’s just a matter of degree) and you notice a strange bird that you’ve never seen before, let one of your birding friends know.  We are in migration season and it may be something rare.  Happy Birding!!

Ken & Joee May Barnes Memorial Scholarship ‑‑The Ken & Joee May Barnes Memorial scholarship fundraiser will take place on Saturday, November 13 at the Terlingua Ghost Town horseshoe pits!  Horseshoe and cribbage tournaments start at 9:30 AM (arrive by 9 to sign up).  BBQ lunch plates served at noonish, followed by a charity auction.  All proceeds support the Big Bend Education Corporation for Terlingua School graduates!

Big Bend Literary Magazine ‑‑ seeks poignant, breathtaking submissions written or created by those deeply affected by the nature, beauty, and culture of the Big Bend region. Big Bend has long inspired and harbored creators.

Submissions are currently open for the Winter 2021 issue, themed "Bright Lights.”  We want bright lights, the light reflected from snow, playing with lights, festive lights, things that light up the soul, eerie lights, beacons and blazes, all those things that kindle the heart and ignite the spirit. Submissions will close on November 30th. Issue II is set to publish January 1.  Submit at: bigbendliterary.com/submit.

Bite Me Chili Cook-off ‑‑ happening Oct. 31, 2021.  Raffle items are requested to help raise money for Terlingua School, Big Bend Family Crisis Center, Terlingua EMS and law enforcement.  If you'd like to donate an item to be raffled, please contact me at Big Bend Resort and Adventures. Raoul Albino and Jennifer A. Hansen.  Thank you!!!

Lots of Halloween Candy ‑‑ for everyone.  Sisters on the Fly (50 women on a traveling mission) will be set up at site #71 Maverick Ranch RV Park at 7 PM on Halloween dressed up and ready for trick or treaters.

Trunk or Treat ‑‑ Hello all! On October 30th at 6 PM, we will be hosting a Trunk or Treat for all the kids/teenagers in the area on Terlingua Ranch Road.  It’s exactly one mile off 118 in front of the Quonset hut where the creepy clown/tin man is.  Everyone (adults included) is encouraged to dress up for Halloween and come and get some candy and have some spooky fun! If anyone would like to volunteer their trunk and decorate it and join in to hand out candy just let us know, the more the merrier for the kids.  Hope to see you all there!!

Terlingua Preservation Society‑‑ If you wondered why all the Mustangs were in Big Bend this last weekend, you’ll want to learn more about them.  They love the Big Bend as much as we all do.  As a group , they’ve donated a total of $297,000 starting in 2009!  This past weekend, through kids at a car wash and a really special auction, they raised money for two full $4K BBHS graduating senior scholarships plus about $6K each to BBHS, TFEMS, and the Crisis Center of the Big Bend, plus about $3K to local domestic animal rescue coordinator Lori Benavidez.  And, they’re already planning for next year.

The Terlingua Preservation Society is a 501c3 non-profit corporation headed up by a group of friends who share a love for Carroll Shelby-designed vehicles, the Carroll Shelby legacy, and in particular, the very special part of the world he would go for R&R in his heyday: the Texas Big Bend country.

Mission Statement: “The Terlingua Preservation Society is dedicated to raising funds in support of the Terlingua, Texas, community, while sharing the Carroll Shelby tradition of automotive excellence.  It does this by operating a safe and exciting annual event in the Big Bend region for cars designed by Carroll Shelby.  Event highlights include speed and handling events, car shows, and scenic drives.”

Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA ‑‑ meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  We wear masks during the meeting, and observe distancing.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.  If you are ill, we respectfully ask that you stay home and call for a "telephone meeting" instead, 432-371-2073.  Leave a message and we'll get back to you.

Poets Laureate ‑‑ to Visit Big Bend Area

The Brewster County Tourism Council and Visit Big Bend welcomes Texas Poets Laureate Karla K. Morton and Alan Birkelbach with singer-songwriter Lisa Carver, as they present two programs in our area October 27-28 in celebration of the poets’ award-winning, historic book: “The National Parks:  A Century of Grace.”

Karla K. Morton was named Texas Poet Laureate in 2010 and is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters. With 15 poetry collections, Morton is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Western Heritage Award, Eric Hoffer Award, Betsy Colquitt Award and Indie Book Award.

Alan Birkelbach, with 12 poetry collections, was named the Texas Poet Laureate in 2005.  He is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters, the Academy of American Poets and the National Park Foundation.  He is a winner of the Western Writers of America Spur Award and a two-time international Indie Book Award finalist.

Both poets traveled to all 62 National Parks across 4 years to create the poetry and photos in their book, published by TCU Press in December 2020.  Along with bringing an awareness to help preserve our country’s National Parks, the co-authors are donating a percentage of all book proceeds back to the Park System.

During the events, Morton and Birkelbach will perform poetry readings and discuss their 4-year National Parks tour and their one-of-a-kind book.  Award-winning singer-songwriter Lisa Carver will also perform.  Carver spent years in Nashville writing songs for artists including Jewel, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and others.  She relocated to the high desert of northern New Mexico in 2015 and has been inspired by the similar landscape of Big Bend in her songwriting to accompany the poetry.

Performances will take place over two nights in the Big Bend area and will be free to the public. The first performance will be held at the 12 Gage Restaurant in Marathon, Texas on October 27th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. If that is too pricey, please just give what you can.

All of what you give will go towards permament pasture lands for these sweet ferral burros via Jackassflats.

Wouldn't you like to see this happen for these sweet creatures, rather than the alternative, extraction and euthanizing them?

No, they aren't native, but they have been here quite a long time, holdovers from Mexican Peoples crossing fhe border many years ago and, to them, this is now Home.

Come get Fit & Flexible for a Good Cause!
