Study Butte Water Continues To Haul Water While Awaiting Pump Installation

Study Butte residents may get some relief today with the arrival and installation of the pump that will boost water production for the system. On Thursday, Big Bend Resorts and Adventures provided water to SBWSC residents who have been affected by the outage.  Trucks from TX Forest Service, Pecos County, Big Bend National Park, and Terlingua Fire and EMS have transported water to the Study Butte storage tank during this outage.  More residents are slowly getting water as efforts continue to restore the system to normal. The extreme hot temperatures have contributed to increased demand by residents during this  an emergency situation.  The SBWSC system customers include all of Terlingua Ghostown and Study Butte.   Water to the Terlingua side of the system was restored June 23 while supply to Study Butte has been restricted due to insufficient water production.

A lightening strike 10 days ago damaged the pump motor to the main water well which was capable of producing up to 150 gallons per minute. The SBWSC is currently producing less than 50 gpm which is insufficient to provide the system pressure and volume needed for the community.

The new motor which was built to withstand high temperatures was supplied by Franklin Electric in Oklahoma is expected to be installed today.  SBWSC will begin pressurizing the system when the pump and motor have been installed by Skinner Well Service out of Alpine, Texas.

All residents are advised to continue water conservation while the system is being repaired.  Level 4 Water Conservation Emergency measures remains in effect and the Boil Water notice is still in effect. This means water may be used for normal household use while watering lawns, gardens, washing vehicles is prohibited.  Any water used for consumption should be boiled prior to use (see www.studybuttewater.com for details).

Bottled drinking water has been donated by numerous organizations and is available to those in need at the Brewster County Emergency Services Center in Terlingua. Drinking water remains available to those in need at the Terlingua EMS building from daily 10am to 2pm.

WATER WATER WATER ---Consider adding rain catchment to your home.
'For every 1,000 sq. ft. of roof 550 gallons of collection are possible'

This is for all who wonder about roof catchment.  [This editor has four relatively small buildings with roof catchment amounting to around 1800-2000sq ft. with tanks allowing around 12,000 gallons of roof catchment.  Mostly half to ¾ full most of the time. We sometimes have water running into our tanks in fog or heavy dew…. 10 inches (+or-) rain every year and a careful frugal life style].

Update from Lajitas:  During this time of need, Lajitas is happy to supply non-potable water to SBWSC customers. Please contact Bob Farley at 408-505-3776 in advance to make arrangements. Also, Bottled Drinking water is available at the General Store. Please bring a copy of your water bill and your own container to fill. Hours of availability are 8am-5pm daily and will be distributed based on demand so please be sure to call in advance. Shower facilities at Maverick Ranch RV park are available to SBWSC customers during this time as well-please contact the Maverick Ranch RV park at 432-424-5180 for more information.

Study Butte Residents Continue to Struggle Without Water
Water hauling efforts will continue today to provide Study Butte residents who have been without water for 10 days. Lajitas Resorts is providing water to SBWSC residents who have been affected by the outage. The SBWSC system customers include all of Terlingua Ghostown and Study Butte. Water to the Terlingua side of the system was restored June 23 while supply to Study Butte has been restricted due to insufficient water production. TX Forest Service trucks are expected to arrive today to help transport water joining transport trucks from Pecos County, Big Bend National Park, and Terlingua Fire and EMS. Efforts yesterday continued to move water from Lajitas Resort to fill the Bee Mtn. storage tank.
A lightening strike 10 days ago damaged the pump motor to the main water producing well which was capable of producing up to 150 gallons per minute. The SBWSC is currently producing less than 50 gpm which is insufficient to provide the system pressure and volume needed for the community. Approximately half of SBWSC customers remain without water today. The specialized replacement motor is being built by Franklin Electric in Oklahoma City and is expected to arrive this week from Oklahoma.
Transporting water will continue throughout until the system can be restored to normal operations. SBWSC hopes to be able to begin pressurizing the system when sufficient water has been transported.
All residents are advised to continue water conservation while the system is being repaired. Study Butte residents will struggle again today without water as an all out effort will be made to fill the Bee Mtn storage tank.  Additional trucks are expected from Alpine and Ft. Stockton to assist in hauling water to the tank. When sufficient has been delivered SBWSC will again pressurize the lines to deliver water to residents.  Pressurization of the lines may take up to 24 hrs and residents are strictly urged to limit water use while pressurization occurs.

Transporting water will continue throughout until the system can be restored to normal operations. Expectations are high that the new pump motor will be ready for delivery tomorrow.  SBWSC hopes to be able to begin producing water this week after 8 days of restricted production.  Production remains at 42 gallons per minute (gpm) which is not enough to maintain sufficient pressure in the system and meet the demands of the customers.  At capacity, almost 200 gallons of water (GPM) can be produced.

With the all out effort, volunteers with a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) are needed to help relieve drivers.  Volunteers are encouraged to contact Terlingua Fire and EMS today at 432-371-3103 or Jason Blanton at 432-599-3232.

MOON XTRA #10 Water Crisis

For Immediate Release:
June 25, 2017
2:40 pm

Study Butte residents will soon be out of water again as heavy use has caused pressure and tank storage problems.  Residents began getting water yesterday as transport tucks delivered water to the Bee Mtn tank.  Unfortunately demand is too high to maintain a volume of water in the tank to pressurize the system.  As a result the water will be turned off from Study Butte to Desert Sports.  Ghostown residents and users should continue to have water.  The Level 4 Water Conservation Emergency measures remains in effect and the Boil Water notice is still in effect. This means water may be used for normal household use while watering lawns, gardens, washing vehicles is prohibited.  Any water used for consumption should be boiled prior to use (see www.studybuttewater.com for details).

Drivers with a CDL who can volunteer their time are needed to help transport water to the tank.  The water is available to transport however drivers are limited.  “If have a CDL and can volunteer your time to help move water please call 432-599-3232.  We could really use your help.” Noted SBWSC plant operator Jason Blanton.

Drinking water remains available to those in need at the Terlingua EMS building from daily 10am to 2pm.

Emergency water operations will continue until the system is repaired.OON XTRA #10 Water Crisis

MOON XTRA #9 on the Water Crisis

Water is now available to most of the area.  Use is very high and if use is not curtailed we will run out of water.  Running out of water means the system will be shut down until water volume can be increased in our storage tanks.

Level 4 Emergency Water Conservation conditions have been declared and it is important to not waste water.  Residents should not wash vehicles, water lawns, fill kiddie pools, use water carelessly; residents should make sure taps are closed, not leaking, and ensure each family member helps in our conservation efforts. Water needed for consumption should be boiled as per the posted Boil Water notice.

Water will continue to be trucked to the Bee Mtn tank.  Crews delivered another 14000 gallons today and will continue the effort tomorrow.

Drinking water remains availed to everyone at the Terlingua ESB from 10 am to 2 pm.

We have shown great concern for our neighbors during this crisis and we still need a strong conservation effort to ensure all our neighbors have water.

Holler at me for information or questions...

LA POSADA MILAGRO's Espresso...y Poco Mas will be open always 7 days a week..7:30-1pm.
Come and enjoy great Big Bend Coffee Roasters and French Toast/fresh eggs/Wrights bacon and smoothies and juices and sodas and lots of good delicious sandwiches, everything made as you like it.
We have free Wifi and please enjoy it even after we have closed. In the heart of the TERLINGUA GHOSTOWN. We may not have water but we are still open and the food and drinks are great.

Water was turned on to Study Butte this afternoon.  The lower reaches of the system are now getting water...the system is filling slowly to prevent hi pressure blowouts on weaker portions of the system.  For example, the La Kiva is the lowest tap and is getting water now.  Those living at elevations above Terlingua Creek will have water later than those residents living lower. Patience will see us through at upper elevations as await a fully pressured system.  The west side and Terlingua Ghostown are expected to be turned on as the eastern portion fills.
So far so good...let's sleep soundly tonight knowing we can shower in the morning.
Rob

Water has been restored to Study Butte and the lower elevations on the system are now getting some water. Upper elevations will likely have water by morning.  The pressure is slowly being raised to prevent damage to the system.  For example,  La Kiva is the lowest tap on the system and it now has water - those living at elevation will get water after the lower portion has filled.
The west side and Terlingua Ghostown will be pressured as the Study Butte side fills. We should all have water in the morning for a nice short shower...
There are a lot of folks to thank at this point...

NEWS RELEASE

Study Butte Water Supply Corporation (SBWSC)

For Immediate Release:

June 23, 2017

 Contact:         Rob Dean,      (432)371-2737
Terlingua and Study Butte residents and businesses continue to be without water today.  The transfer of water to the Bee Mtn tank is complete for today with over 71,000 gallons transported by Big Bend National Park and Terlingua Fire and Emergency Services tankers.  The SBWSC system will be slowly pressurized this evening to provide water to our customers.  If water pressure and demand allow, the system should provide water tonight and most of tomorrow.  We are asking customers to be very conservative in their water use.  A Level 4 Water Conservation Emergency is still in effect.  This means water may be used for normal household use while watering lawns, gardens, washing vehicles is prohibited. Tankers will continue to transport water through the emergency to insure demand is met.  Conserving water use will help to keep our system running.
County, local officials, and good neighbors are working to ensure drinking water is available to local water customers.  Water is available at the SBWSC plant during normal business hours and is subject to the Boil Water Notice (see www.studybuttewater.com).  Drinking water has been donated by the Red Cross, West Texas Food Bank, Big Bend Hospital District,  Big Bend Brewery, Family Crisis Center and others and remains available to those in need at the Terlingua EMS building from 10am to 2pm.
The new motor for Well #1 is expected to be arrive on Thursday, June29 with hopes of installation, testing, and production to be completed by Saturday, July 1.

Moon Xtra #4 on the Water Crisis

From Rob Dean, PIO:

Amigos,

As of noon today we have moved over 71000 gallons of water to the Bee Mtn storage tank.  At 6:30 this evening we plan on slowly pressuring the system and provide water to our customers.  Customers should be aware that the water is still under the boil water notice and can expect air in the lines as the pressure builds.  The water may be cloudy, brown, rust, or bubbly and can be used for washing and flushing.  We also remind everyone that the Level 4 Water Conservation Requirements are still in effect...please be very conservative with your water use.

While we will try to provide water continuously we should be aware that if we are unable to maintain pressure or water volume we will need to limit the hours of operation.

Please share as appropriate...my contact list is related to ignorance...

MOON Extra #3 on Water Crisis

UPDATE - Study Butte Water Supply Corporation 10 am
The Workers...
Today crews from BBNP and Terlingua Fire and EMS and Brewster County Sheriffs Office and volunteers continue to transfer water to the Bee Mtn. storage tank. We hope to bring the tank level to 70,000 gallons or more by 1 pm today. If you see them thank them for their efforts in getting the system back on line.
The Plan...
The operations plan calls for the system to be slowly pressurized by 6:30 pm today in hopes of providing water through the evening and tomorrow. We are turning on the water slowly so it does not blow out valves or connectors. Expect your tap to blow air as the pressure builds. Your water may be discolored and have air bubbles - remember a boil water notice is still in effect for your drinking water. The length of service will depend on usage, demand and storage volume. We ask that all users be very conservative in their water usage...the less we use the longer it stays on...
The Friends...
There has been an outpouring of support from our neighbors. Thanks to Brewster County Sheriffs Office, Brewster County Judge and Commissioners, Terlingua Fire and EMS, Big Bend National Park, Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend,West Texas Food Bank, Big Bend Regional Hospital District, Lajitas On The Rio Grande, Congressman Will Hurd, USDA, Big Bend Resorts and Adventures, the Red Cross...plus 100s of volunteers. I am sure that there are others that I have left off with apologies...let me know and I'll add to the list.
The Community...
Strong people with few complaints and lots of interest and support. Glad to be part of it...

Water operations will continue today with transferring water this morning to the Bee Mtn. tank. About 50,000 gallons were tansferred yesterday and another 20,000 will be moved this morning. Commissioner Ortega is hoping to deliver 40,000 by truck as well as find a well pump for the system while we await the new motor.
Once water transfer has been completed, the system will be slowly pressurized in an effort to provide some water to our customers. We will do our best to keep you informed of the progress.
Local neighboring communities continue to help with drinking water deliveries.
We appreciate the community outreach and the patience and understanding of everyone while we deal with this crisis.
Please feel free to give me a call if you need more information or assistance. I am available at 432-371-2737...leave a message and I will get back with you. Or you can email me at rgvranger@yahoo.com.

They also have potable water (up to 50 gallons per day) and non-potable water (up to 500 gallons per day) available for purchase at the Terlingua Ranch office. Terlingua Moon XTRA on the Study Butte Water Crisis

From Rob Dean:
Our community has rallied with this crisis and our neighbors have responded with support.  Those needing drinking water can pick up bottled water  at the Terlingua ESB generally from 10 to 2 daily.  The staff at the ESB are handing out and managing the water.  Water donations have come from the Red Cross, West Texas Food Bank,  Congressman Will Hurds office,  Big Bend Brewery in Alpine, and Laurie Holman is bringing water from Presidio.  Big Bend Resort and Adventures is offering water, laundry, and showers to needy residents - just check at the front desk.

With luck we may be producing water sooner than we think.

The board and staff of the SBWSC thank everyone for their support and we appreciate the patience and understanding of everyone without water.

Editor's note: If you want to help giving water, delivering/picking up water, or otherwise, please call Rob Dean at 432-371-2737. [Additional Editor's Note: Please call 8 am - 9 pm.]

Bebe is a purebred red Chihuahua who weighs 5 pounds. Previously, she had one eye removed. We don't know the story on that but having only one eye doesn't seem to slow her down one teeny tiny bit. Bebe wants to be your shadow, sit in your lap, and snuggle. When held, she wags her little tail against your tummy... She's delighted by attention and gives gentle kisses. Bebe is spayed, microchipped and up to date on all shots. For more information about Bebe or any animal at the Alpine Animal Shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com

BOIL WATER NOTIFICATION
Study Butte Water Supply Corporation
June 20, 2017
Due to a loss of pressure on the lines, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has required our water system, PWS ID 0220035, to notify all customers to boil their water prior to consumption.
To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to consumption. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from another suitable source.
Our system has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore adequate pressure, disinfectant levels, and/or bacteriological quality.
When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, water system officials will notify you that the water is safe for consumption. Instructions to discontinue boiling will be issued in the same manner as this notice.
If a customer wishes to reach TCEQ, they may call 512.239.4691

Brewster County has accepted a $500,000 donation from Trans-Pecos Pipeline, LLC for First Responder Initiatives. The funds are earmarked to purchase emergency response vehicles, equipment and cameras, and to finish the build out of the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department.
The new emergency response vehicles will be outfitted to serve as first response mobile units. New equipment will primarily consist of firefighter gear and apparatus specifically needed to safely secure hazards or fight fires. Additionally, the donation from the Trans-Pecos Pipeline will be used to purchase and install security cameras along the pipeline corridor to enable our Sheriff’s Office to monitor pipeline activity locally 24/7. This is in addition to the pipeline’s 24/7 remote monitoring and safety systems.
For more information, contact Judge Eleazar Cano at 432.837.2412 or email eleazar.cano@co.brewster.tx.us, or write P.O. Box 1630, Alpine, Texas, 79831. You can also find more information on the Brewster County website.

The Terlingua Moon
June 6th, 2017
Volume 28 ~ #23
By South County  Mud Clowns
************

The last, thinnest sliver of the waning moon has passed several days ago, as have two of the most remarkable of our community family. Farewell to the unique character that was and is  Doc Doug Blackmon, and to our beloved and brilliant Cynthia Hood.
Both memorials were well attended with love.

A final waning crescent is sometimes called the Crying Moon – a time symbolizing release of negatively, pain, hate, and a time to forgive and let go.  So fitting the paths both of these followed in life.  May they rest peacefully now.

Canyon Brew @ FFOC – Have you tried Cold Brew Coffee yet? Thinking about coffee, but it’s a warm summer day. How about a Cold Brew Coffee on ice? We got that! We also offer Espresso, Latte, Cappuccino, Macchiato & Chai. Don’t forget – bring your own Mug and save a Buck! Opening at 7am thru the summer.  Far Flung Outdoor Center 432.371.2633

Big Bend National Parks Rio Grande Village campground is to be closed from May 30th - September 1st. This closure is for the installation/replacement of a water tank and wastewater lagoon liners. Overflow camping during the process is being directed to the Terlingua/ Study Butte area, and to Stillwell's Ranch and RV Park.

The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

Lola is a beautiful and good-natured pit bull terrier mix (australian shepherd, maybe?) with a merle coat and one blue eye. Next Week’s Moon by   TwEyelight Raven

Keep Terlingua Green Hey friends - there are all kinds of ways to help keep Terlingua Green and we need your help! There are more and more beer cans, bottles, and general trash thrown along our roads of late; won't you take 5 minute wherever you're headed to pick it up and dispose of it properly? Keep a bag or box or bucket in your car and help keep the area clean? Much of what's "trashing" our beautiful Big Bend is also harmful to birds and other creatures (six-pack rings are especially harmful). Really, if most folks took even 5 minutes once a week to help clean up the area along their routes, it would make such a difference.

While you're at it, don't forget to recycle! Terlingua has a great recycling center located just behind the EMS station. There are separate bins for tin, aluminum, paper, cardboard, etc. and we're closer than ever to being able to handle glass. A few pointers that make the volunteers' lives a lot easier: take the tops off milk and similar cartons and step on them to compact them somewhat; make sure cans and other containers are clean; we can't accept the plastic grocery/ retail store bags so please don't toss them in with your recyclable plastic; finally - no styrofoam.

We typically take Terlingua's recycling bins into BBNP's recycling center the last Thursday of the month, leaving Terlingua around 8 and back around 1. Caravan with us in your own car or ride along with one of the other volunteers. If you can't make that but have a few minutes in your week to stop by the recycling center to help tidy up, that's great too. Please note, however, that as BBNP's center is closed for June, there won't be a run this month.
