Edited by Cactus Jane

“Many forms of Government have been tried and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government –  except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”
 — Winston Churchill, House of Commons speech, November 1947.

Suuuuper Moooooon. Stick it out for happy endings! Thanks for reading and sharing!

The Blue Moon – Second of two full moons in one calendar month – will pass through the Earth’s shadow on January 31, 2018, to give us a total lunar eclipse. Totality, when the moon will be entirely inside the Earth’s dark umbral shadow, will last a bit more than one-and-a-quarter hours. The January 31 full moon is also the third in a series of three straight full moon supermoons – that is, super-close full moons. It’s the first of two Blue Moons in 2018. So it’s not just a lunar eclipse, or a Blue Moon, or a supermoon. It’s all three … a super Blue Moon eclipse!
Is it the first Blue Moon total eclipse in 150 years, as some social media memes are now claiming? It is … if you’re not considering the whole world, but only the Americas. More about that below.
IMPORTANT. If you live in North America or the Hawaiian Islands, this lunar eclipse will be visible in your sky before sunrise on Jan 31.

BUDDY NEEDS A HOME

He’s in his golden years but a happy dog who seems fit as a fiddle. For more information about any pet in the Alpine Shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com

Campground Closure at BBNP
Big Bend National Park will be working on deferred maintenance projects in the Cottonwood campground this winter.  The park will replace an out of date irrigation system with a modern system and restore the landscape to facilitate proper irrigation of the low lying areas.  The planned work will occupy the entirety of the campground and temporary closures will be enacted.
Closures are planned January 29th through February 28th, 2018 for the Cottonwood campground, including group sites.  Pedestrian access to the Cottonwood campground and river access adjacent to the campground will also be unavailable.  Visitors will still be able to visit the area including Castolon, Dorgan House Trail, Santa Elena Canyon Overlook, and Santa Elena Canyon Trail.
The park reminds visitors that additional camp sites are available in the park at Rio Grande Village and the Chisos Basin and outside the park at Stillwell’s Ranch and RV park north of the park, and within Terlingua and Study Butte just west of the park.  VisitBigBend.com provides additional information on the facilities outside of the park.
These projects will help in reducing the near $90 million dollars of deferred maintenance projects at Big Bend National Park, and will directly benefit visitors by providing a well-maintained campground. The park appreciates the patience and understanding of our visitors during this important upgrade to the Cottonwood campground.

Slim Fest thRee!
Hey friends of the Moon and all things Big Bend. Let us clue you in on an amazing deal happening February 8-11th at The Starlight Theatre. $40/ night or $75/ weekend (advance sales) is all it will take to stand exclusively in the funky confines of the Starlight Theater with 175 of your favorite Slim Richey-loving friends to see the infamous Carolyn Wonderland; Guy Forsyth’s Hot Nut Riveters, The Alan Munde Band, Dana Louise & The Glorious Birds; the chain’s-on-fire, boot scooting sounds of Doug Moreland and his Flying Armadillos and last, for the reason there might not be a Starlight after their gig as they could easily burn the place down, The Jitterbug Vipers and Slim’s All Star Jam.  What!!!???!!!!
On top of that, and all are welcome - no cover - the festival will open Thursday night (Feb. 8th) with Amy Sue Berlin and Jacob Alan Jaeger. Also, no cover, on Sunday the 11th, The Alan Munde Band will be hosting the GawdSpell Brunch at The Starlight and Sunday evening is an open-to-all Open Mic.
Go to www.faroutbooking.com for the ticket link for Slim Fest thRee. Ticket sales will cap at 175 but all sponsorships are sold out.

Blackeyed Pea Off
Weather or not, this year’s Blackeyed Pea Off was yet another fun filled day, celebrating “good luck” in the coming year.
This year’s winner was long-time participant, having entered many times in the past, Mike Taylor.  Second place was Rustin Furlow of Terlingua.  And third was his brother, Cade Furlow, from O’Donnell Texas.
We raised $2,000.00 (one 5 dollar bill at a time) for Last Minute, Low Budget Productions.  This will probably go towards the new “porcelain bush”.
Many thanks to the Hot Date Raffle donors, helpful volunteers, and our generous community for another successful Blackeyed Pea Off!!!

Highland Motel in Alpine, TX
I just wanted to tell the Terlingua area community that we offer a rate of $50.00 per night for Terlingua residents.  This price includes tax.  My family has roots in the Terlingua area since the 1880's and consider ourselves part of the Terlingua community.  A lady from South County suggested I inform the community that this price was available to them on their travels to Alpine and beyond.
