Terlingua MOON

June 27, 2023

Vol.34   No. 26

by Million sMiles

"We have one life, one shot at all the glorious things of life, and we walk about constricted, apologetic, afraid. We have so little time; we have so little space upon which to spread our love and our talents and our kindness. Run toward life fulsomely and freely."            ~ Tennessee Williams

Terlingua Fire and EMS

You’ve seen a lot of talk about our upcoming Community Paramedicine Program; but what exactly is a Community Paramedicine Program?

In the most simple terms, think of it as an urgent care on wheels.

Community paramedicine is a new way of providing medical help in one’s own home in hopes of preventing a 911 emergency later on down the road. Paramedics will receive extra training to meet the specific needs of our communities in South Brewster County. They will work under the guidance of a medical director and the patient's primary care doctor to bring primary care to people's homes and act as a link between the medical team and the patient. The main goal is to fill the gaps in healthcare services and help patients navigate the complex system.

As our community paramedicine continues to develop, the role of the paramedics will expand and become more integrated into the patient's overall healthcare team wether it be chronic illness management, wound care, or simply patient education.

The more questions you, as a community, asks, the better we can help identify and resolve your questions and concerns.

Stay safe,

J. Thomason, FF/EMT

Bring Forth the Fleas!

Saturday 9 AM to whenever

Bring your goods to trade at the JackAss Pavillion north of the Little Burro Store

Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00.  We're planning to run right on through the summer. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're there every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.

Fresh eggs, local art, handcrafted textiles, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms, hand balms and perfumes, leather goods, Sandy's creative pop up shop and more -- you never know just what you'll find. Pop in to see one of our new vendors and her handcrafted, creative jewelry, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled.

We welcome new vendors. Come set up in the shade to sell your wares. Flea market items are welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com

or pop in to the market for a chat.

Do you have mad skills and smart, practical talents you'd like to share? We all love to learn about sustainable arts and useful skills here in Terlingua. Let's talk about a workshop.

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

My name is Adriana Sanchez. Most of you know me from my crafts for sale on Facebook, I live in Boquillas del Carmen...it's a small town across the river in Big Bend National Park, our closest city is 360 miles from here. ...so essential things like food, doctors and other things are quite far from us! I want to share that my father is sick with schizophrenia and requires treatment and hospitalization for a while in order to receive the necessary help for his health to improve! This type of medication is quite expensive and needs to be transported to the city because we don't have this type of help in boquillas...If you want and can help my family in any way, we will really appreciate it...thank you very much

Two Visitor Fatalities in Big Bend National Park On June 23, during 119 degree extreme heat, Big Bend National Park’s Communications Center received a call for emergency assistance along the Marufo Vega Trail. Rangers and Border Patrol Agents located a 14 year old boy deceased along the trail, and soon after located the stepfather deceased at the scene of a crashed vehicle. The incident remains under investigation.

BBRMC Art Show Update and New Opportunities:

BBAC Art Shows at the Big Bend Regional Medical Center will soon return!  There are still some details to finish up, but this art show opportunity will be renewed and improved, moving to a new location.  Not far from the original hall where the art shows were hung, is a wing of the hospital that will be focused on rehabilitation and extended stay patients.  It is a very pleasant hall with natural light.  Molding will be installed  on the walls to prepare for 2-D art displays which should begin in August.

It would be great to resume our traditional rotation where the art show at the bank moves out to the hospital at the end of the month, making room for the next artist to start at the bank.

One thing to consider, the hospital art shows are very vital, as art has been proven to have a positive impact on the mind and body.  Many studies show benefits of art in a healthcare environment.  Some of these include:

§  Artwork makes a connection and elicits a response that starts conversation, provides distraction or an escape

§  Artwork focused on nature or familiar landmarks reduces stress and improves patient outcomes such as decreasing need for pain medication and length of stay

§  Art can provide a focal point to reduce sensory overload from the setting such as temperature, lighting, sounds and pain

§  Artwork can also positively impact care staff

These positive effects are magnified when patients can participate in art activites.  The hospital is wanting to offer art workshops with hands-on  2-D or 3-D projects for able patients.  If you are interested in teaching or leading any kind of art project class, please contact me for more information.

Hopefully you will keep these helpful benefits in mind when it’s time to sign up to have your own art show or class/workshop at the BBRMC.  Be watching for future emailed updates.

Thanks.  Shelly 432-294-1538
