UPDATE/POSTPONEMENT: Terlingua Public Library's next presentation with Marlys Hersey, founder of Far Out Hooping in Alpine, an evening of fun with hoops, originally scheduled for Thu. Nov. 19 at 6 pm, has been postponed because Marlys will be having surgery next week and needs to recover fully before she can get her hoop on and whoop it up with y'all at the library. Please join us to Thursday, January 21 @ 6 pm for an evening of hoopiness. Improve your health and well being; join us in using the hoop to take us through a full range of motion, loosening our spines, stretching and strengthening our muscles, improving our balance, and increasing our joy with this portable and inexpensive toy. Have a hoop? Bring it. Or borrow one of Marlys'. Male, female, young, not so young, tall, short, thin, or wanting to slim down a bit: this is a program for everyone. That toy you enjoyed as a child can be a great means to fitness, community-building, and a daily movement practice. Marlys Hersey is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Hoop Love Coach, and Hoola-Fit Instructor. Terlingua Public Library is located on the campus of Terlingua Common School District. All programs are free and open to the public.

Young, healthy and highly athletic, this happy dog will make a wonderful family pet or companion for an active person willing to take their dog everywhere. SPECKLES loves to play ball and is good with other dogs (but is truly man's or woman's best friend material)! Tipsy was a rescue puppy. She was born in Feb. 2014. My son lives in California with his father and needs much more support at this time in his life than I can provide so far away. I need the ability to go back and forth between here and California and when gone be away for longer periods of time. My husband is over committed with multiple and varied obligations and can not possibly add her care to his already overextended schedule. She is very sweet. Two different vets have said that she looks quite a bit like a greyhound. Her behavior is that of a sight hound (which means she is quick to chase things that move) so she needs to be walked and/or somewhere there is a fence. (She will run off.) She also needs to be in a home where someone can spend time with her (even exercise her) as she still has some puppy in her. She is use to living with another dog. She has not had any exposure to cats. She has been spayed and is up to date on all her shots. She does sleep in a crate at night but is just as happy to sleep out on the floor. If you (or someone you know) might be able to provide her a good temporary home (all food and vet costs will be paid for) please call me at (432) 371-2263 or email seagullcaller@mac.com. If fostering does not become available by mid-December, I will explore permanent placement.

SKY is a beautiful Husky who was rescued from the streets and is hoping someone will give him a chance to be a proper pet. He has a few things still to learn and is slowly rebuilding trust after what was clearly a tough time for him while he was on his own. SKY has had some experience with dogs and cats and loves water. He is about 60 pounds and not quite yet two years old. Come pay this striking guy a visit! SKY is housebroken, neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all shots. His adoption fee is $100. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. WELCOME CHILI HEADS

Next Big Bend Citizens Alliance meeting Wednesday, November 11, 5:30 at the Casa de Cultura (Crisis Center)@ See more at the end of this MOON

Stop by QUILTS by MARGUERITE and see the two, beautiful quilts to be awarded by drawing Saturday Nov. 7th, at the CASI Championship Chile site, after chili winners are announced. You don't have to be present to win a quilt.  Tickets for your chance to win are $5.00 each - or 5 tickets for $20.00.  You can pick up your tickets at Marguerite's; she's open from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.  These special quilts are displayed on the wall there.  The Art Class students at Terlingua Common School created unique, individual blocks for their quilt under the guidance of their teacher, Betina Kerns. The blocks were sewn together by teacher Donna Beck. A second quilt to be drawn for was created by Marguerite.  It is queen-sized and has a southwestern theme. As always, proceeds from the sale of tickets for both quilts goes to the TCSD Scholarship fund.

Big Bend National Park Announces Texas Artist as 2015 Artist in Residence
Terlingua, TX, October 29, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Big Bend National Park, in cooperation with the non-profit National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) and the Big Bend Natural History Association, announced today that Dawn Waters Baker, a painter from Dallas, Texas, will be the park’s November, 2015, Artist in Residence.  Dawn Waters Baker was born and raised in the Philippines as an expatriate, and only came to the United States when she was 18. This formative experience of witnessing poverty and grace has given her, in her artist’s path, a determined and searching viewpoint that does not take things for granted. Though represented at galleries in Dallas, New York, Scottsdale, and Tulsa, she takes pride in her volunteer work at ALERT, a non-profit where she coaches at-risk and trafficked girls to use art to express themselves. As well as working on new work while she is at the park, Dawn is looking forward to making a presentation or leading some painting workshops for the public during her time at the park.  National Parks Arts Foundation - Cecilia Wainright - 505-715-6492 - Contact - nationalparksartsfoundation.org

BEBE is a small and sturdy 3-year old pit bull/lab mix who really misses having a family. BEBE is an exceptional leash walker and all about his human: he offers his paw, leans up against you, and gazes deeply into your eyes. He interacts with people beautifully, and has clearly had some training. BEBE gets along with some dogs but not all, and would probably prefer to be an only dog. BEBE needs just moderate activity but steady human friendship. He is housebroken, neutered, micro-chipped, and up-to-date on all shots. His adoption fee is $100. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. All AAS animals are online at https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=TX1202 For more info emailheatherthemule@gmail.com

Becoming Mechanic Center:  If you didn't change your anti-freeze last year, you'll want to do it now. Your car's antifreeze is an especially important fluid in the winter because it keeps your car's engine, radiator and hoses from freezing. It also prevents engine corrosion. @Overview of Big Bend Citizens Alliance [BBCA] Operations

The Mission Statement of the Alliance:
The Big Bend Citizens Alliance is a community organization dedicated to addressing issues affecting the health, welfare and quality of life in the Big Bend area”.

The purpose of the Alliance is:
  1. To bring together persons with an active interest in addressing issues affecting the health, welfare, and quality of life
  2. To actively promote the preservation of health, welfare, and quality of life
  3. To actively discourage the destruction of the quality of life
  4. To maintain 501(c)3 non-profit status
Discussion:
The BBCA is a 501(c) 3 organization based in South Brewster County Texas; situated along the Mexican border and adjoining Big Bend National Park in West Texas. This remote, sparsely populated, rural location has a very active volunteer community dedicated to improving life in the Big Bend area.
BBCA manages through an elected Board of Directors and is staffed 100% by part-time volunteers. Operationally it functions as an umbrella organization with active distinct committees tied to the community. Each committee operates with an autonomous committee head or leader having limited spending authority.
Active BBCA committees include:
  • Terlingua Community Garden & Farmers Market
  • The Kids Klub
  • Terlingua Recycles
  • Terlingua Cares
  • Voices from Both Sides
  • Terlingua Artists
  • Ghost Town Charities

Over the past five years both the number of committees has grown as well as activity levels of each committee due to expanding volunteer commitment to the community and the mission of the BBCA.

A detailed description of each committee’s activity and assets follow.

Terlingua Community Garden & Farmers Market
https://communitygarden.org/find-a-garden/gardens/terlingua-community-garden/
Through dedicated volunteers over the past seven years, the TCG has created a sustainable community garden from barren desert and supported a weekly seasonal farmers market for locally grown or created food products. Individual plots are used to plant and harvest food for both personal consumption as well as support of community food bank. Operated on land owned by Ivey Enterprises, fund raising activities and volunteers have developed a supporting infrastructure including buildings, water harvesting system, fencing and shade structures.
The farmers market operates on Saturday’s from late fall through early spring.
Largest fund raising event is an annual one day event called the Terlingua Green Scene Sustainability Festival combining education, demonstrations, activities and fun.

The Kids Klub
The primary activity is operation and maintenance of Canyon View Community Park a softball/baseball park on four plus acres adjoining the Terlingua Public School. This facility was built from locally raised funds with a grant from the National Baseball League. It is used seasonally on weekends for informal games. Long- term goal is transfer of ownership to Brewster County from the BBCA to foster greater maintenance and use by the adjoining school.
Terlingua Recycles
To preserve the pristine nature of the surrounding desert environment, volunteers operate a recycling trailer for aluminum, tin, plastic, and cardboard. Residents can deposit these materials into a customized, dedicated trailer which is transported by volunteers 50 miles to a recycling center located within the adjoining national park. Recent support by the county has led to specific electronic recycling events for items not normally recycled nor accepted during normal trash pickup.

Terlingua Cares
The rich musical history of Terlingua along with the large number of local musicians has supported charitable concerts for needy individuals as well as local support groups. Hosted by several supporting restaurants, these Terlingua Cares concerts have raised thousands of dollars for people most in need in the community. This is a true ‘grass roots’ charity.

Voices From Both Sides

The closing of the Mexican border throughout the Big Bend region post September 11, 2001 created great disruption for families living on both sides of the river. Voices From Both Sides is a non-political effort to raise awareness of these border issues through music and cultural exchanges.
A cross-border musical event is held at Lajitas Texas in early May to highlight the diversity yet commonality of the Rio Grande region.

Terlingua Artists
The visual artist community is represented and supported through fundraising events throughout the year. Last year’s product was a 2015 calendar featuring local artists work.

Ghost Town Charities

The remoteness of the area from health and other services represent an additional hardship for the poor in the Big Bend region. Ghost Town Charites helps working people and families that experience hardships from time to time.  Examples include medical or dental visits, propane, utility bills and gasoline expenses.

Ghost Town Charities is also proud to help local visual and musical artists by providing them a venue to display and sell their art or perform their music at various local charity/benefit events.

Ghost Town Charities was founded by Herman Everett & Deanna Castillo of High Sierra Bar & Grill @ The El Dorado Hotel
