FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 9, 2026

Presidio County, Texas, Officials and Community Members

Group Demands Dangerous Razor Wire Be Removed Before Flooding

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Joint Task Force—Southern Border told coming seasonal floods will dislodge the razor wire, endangering lives along the Rio Grande

A group of Presidio County, Texas, officials and community members is urging Joint Task Force–Southern Border and United States Customs and Border Protection to remove concertina wire installed in the Rio Grande floodplain in Presidio, Texas before seasonal flooding sends the wire downstream.

The joint letter challenges CBP’s May 7, 2026 statement that the wire is “appropriately secured to withstand seasonal flooding,” arguing that the installation fails to meet the Army’s own published engineering standards. Evidence suggests the pickets are driven into fine-grained alluvial soils that Army doctrine identifies as unsuitable for load-bearing installations and the wire itself is not secured to the pickets, likening the whole setup to “a toothpick pushed top-down through a stretched-out spiky slinky.”

The group warn that flood-mobilized razor wire would endanger residents, ranchers, livestock, wildlife, river guides, tourists, first responders, and border personnel while also trapping debris and altering river flows. They further argue that allowing flood-borne wire to obstruct the flow of the Rio Grande may conflict with federal law and treaty obligations governing the river as the international boundary between the United States and Mexico.

With recent regional flooding already requiring debris removal along FM 170 just downstream of the wire, the risk is no longer hypothetical and an immediate technical review and removal of the wire are requested.

The letter states that border security measures must comply with federal law, international treaty obligations, and established engineering and safety standards.

“We take the Army at its word: standards save lives. The standards are being violated. Lives are at risk as a result.”

COME SEE US AT THE SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET, open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Located in the Ghost Town, down in the Community Garden, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, sour dough bread, jelly, pickles, all natural lip balms and skin care products, all natural essential oil fragrances, beard oil and massage oils, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here.

Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.

We welcome new vendors. To make it easy for new vendors to try our market and to show our appreciation to our regular vendors, we waive set-up fees on the first Saturday of the month, offering free set-up on that day.

For more information, text or call 432.213.1863 or pop in at the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

KEEP BIG BEND WILD will be sending in our comments this week to CBP regarding their plans for border construction in the national park.  We’ll keep them civil.  We will post our comments later this week on the KBBW website at keepbigbendwild.org/border-issues/ along with a summary of points you can use for your comments.  There’s a lot of other useful info on border security and Big Bend National Park there as well.

In a typically confusing way, CBP has two distinct web sites which describe the proposed work in the national park and request comments.  They have similar, but not exactly the same, information. It’s worth looking at both this site and this one.

While we don’t know if CBP will pay any attention to comments, considering that they have waived all federal, state, and local laws that might force them to be accountable to the will of the people, we have to try.  Hopefully we can slow them down, and get them to back off, at a minimum, the most unnecessary and destructive aspects of their plansComments are due July 13 – please voice your opinion. Typically the most valuable comments are both fact-based and civil, and propose specific alternatives rather than just say “hell no,” much as we feel that way.

On the legal front, KBBW is working with the Center for Biological Diversity on strategy, and they have now amended their lawsuit to include the areas covered by DHS’ June 9 waiver – Colorado Canyon, the entire national park, and Black Gap WMA.  They have specifically referenced the park-specific border statistics that KBBW is using to show that the national park is at the other extreme from being an “area of high illegal entry” as it is the quietest section of the entire US-Mexico border.

The ex-superintendents have written another open letter to the DHS Secretary, which will be published this week and posted on that KBBW border-issues page mentioned above.  More on that in next week’s Moon.

Please learn more at keepbigbendwild.org, and consider supporting Keep Big Bend Wild.  There's no more important time.  Donations are welcome (we're financially sponsored by the El Paso Community Foundation, a 501c3), but we need you to allow us to list you as a supporter even more – no need to donate.  Local business supporters are especially appreciated.

We're also looking for additional people to join our core team (ie the board), especially from the Big Bend area. Contact bob.krumenaker@keepbigbendwild.org to discuss.
