The Terlingua Moon
 May 29, 2018 -- Vol. 29, #22
by Ghostwriters on the Sly

Next MOON: MaeWestern

It's HOT out there!  May and June are typically the hottest and driest months of the year in Big Bend, with daytime temperatures often reaching 100 and heat indices near 120 degrees Fahrenheit! Protect yourself from deadly heat stroke by following some simple guidelines: hike early and be off the trail before noon, wear sun protective clothing and a hat, drink at least 1 quart/hour of water (1 gallon/day or more), eat salty snacks, and seek shade.  Drinking water alone will not keep you cool!  Here in Big Bend, even the mountain trails can  reach the high 90's in the shade in the summer.  Take care of yourself and your hiking buddies so you can hike another day.

IT'S A FLOWER MOON ...;) SEE YU THERE ...
Depending on the tribe, May’s Full Moon was called the Full Flower Moon as well as Mother’s Moon, Milk Moon, and Corn Planting Moon. The May Moon marked a time of increasing fertility, with temperatures warm enough for safely bearing young, a near end to late frosts, and plants in bloom.

There will be a SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BREWSTER COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT MAY 30 AT THE RED PATILLO COMMUNITY CENTER. (Anyone who signs up can have up to 5 minutes for a public comment before the Court.)  Please come to this public meeting at 10AM on Wednesday, May 30 at the Red Pattillo community center. [Editor’s Comment: Hopefully, there will be discussion about the recycling issue.  This editor will be out of town or I would attend and comment.]

On June 12, 2018, communities across the state of Texas will be gathering in recognition of Women Veterans
Day, to recognize the role of women in the military forces and commemorate the sacrifices of and valor displayed by Texas women veterans. On June 12, 1948, President Harry Truman signed into law the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to serve as permanent, regular members of the armed forces. Last year, Senate Bill 805 established June 12th as Women Veterans Day in Texas. As home to more women veterans than any other state, Texas is in a unique position to take the lead on many women veterans’ issues. For ideas on how you can help recognize women veterans in your community, and for a listing of already scheduled events, visit www.tvc.texas.gov/women-veterans/womenvetsday/

This happened approximately May 24th.  This editor doesn’t know if the tire has been recovered or not…. “A brand new Yokohama Geolander tire came loose from a strap on my truck right beside the “Welcome to Terlingua Ghosttown” sign two days ago. Some people saw it and let me know. It was gone when I went to look for it. I’m sure someone is keeping it safe and hoping to find the owner. I would love to get it back. Thank you all!  ~Marc Utter

Hey there, it's me Grizzly! I am a well behaved, 3 year old mixed breed and I am not one to brag, but I am "kind of a big deal." My manners, sweetness and overall amazing attitude make me a remarkable dog! Although I have been in the shelter for quite some time, I am patiently waiting for my forever home and I am not losing hope! I love catching raindrops on my tongue, making new dog friends and I get along with every dog I meet. I am wonderful with all humans too; I don't pull on the leash and am fully house trained. All I need is a loving home and belly rubs - and I will be so grateful! C'mon, come visit me at the shelter. I can't wait to meet you! I am micro chipped and fully vaccinated.
