VOICES FROM BOTH SIDES - this year's theme is PICNIC! Saturday May 12 near Lajitas starting about Noon. Bring a disco, food to share, chairs and your personality. Live music, partying on the river all day long, drink responsibly (see poster, attached).
NOTICE OF PRIMARY RUNOFF ELECTION FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. Voting will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday May 22 for precincts 5, 6 and 7 at Red Patillo Community Center.
Early voting for precincts 5, 6 and 7 will be in Alpine at the Judge Val Beard Complex May 14 - 18th from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for all precincts or in Study Butte at the Red Patillo Community Center Monday May 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (precincts 5, 6 and 7), or at Panther Junction in the Conference Room on Wednesday May 16 from Noon to 5 p.m. (precincts 5, 6 and 7).

THE MCDANNALD RANCH FIRE WAS REPORTED as having a footprint of 19,000 acres and was 61 percent contained as of May 7. The fire no longer has a major flame front or head, but until it is completely contained, officials say new flare ups and fronts are possible (source: Marfa Public Radio). BURN BAN IN EFFECT. Due to extremely hazardous fire conditions in Brewster County, Managers of Lajitas, Texas have mandated a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for any type of fire, excluding propane cookers. NO CHARCOAL, NO WOOD, NO COMBUSTIBLES OTHER THAN PROPANE. Any fire resulting from grilling or the use of one of these cookers is an illegal fire.
TOURISM TO BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK CREATES OVER $40 MILLION in economic benefits (see press release, attached).
NOTICE FROM BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK. Eleven backpacking sites in the Chisos Mountains will be closed until further notice due to high fire danger: Juniper Flats, Boulder Meadows and Pinnacles campsites. The hiking trails will remain open at this time. The park has a has a charcoal ban and wood fires are not allowed. There is also a permanent smoking ban on the Chisos trails and the Chisos campgrounds.

Unfortunately, the Hillie Bills have had to cancel their Tuesday date. Due to health problems they had to cut short their tour. We hope to have them at La Kiva sometime in the future.
