NOVEMBER 10th - Mark your Calendars for the next Joee May Barnes Memorial Scholarship Benefit.  It will be held at the horseshoe pits in the Terlingua Ghost Town.  As usual we'll have BBQ plates, Horseshoe & Cribbage Tournaments, and an Auction to raise money to continue the Scholarship for a Terlingua High School Graduate.  We need volunteers to manage the horseshoe tournament, cribbage tournament and the action.  Please text 573.286.5285 to volunteer - Thanks!

Last year Last Minute Low Budget Productions staged its first talent show, and it was a big hit.  Locals and school kids who had never performed on our stage before got up, danced, acted, sang, and did magic tricks.  It was such fun, and raised hundreds of dollars for the Terlingua student council, that LMLB decided to do it again.  The show is scheduled for Wednesday, November 7.  There will be cash prizes for first, second, and third places.  Voting will be by the audience, so bring all your friends.  Here's what we need:    Name(s):  Contact info:  Short description of your act:  Estimated time (10 mins max):  Special needs (if any):

RECYCLING - Hi all you recycle helpers. Thursday, November 1 is the next run to PJ to unload the trailer. Lots of stuff to unload and sort so hopefully we can get some help. 8AM at the trailer or 9 or so at PJ.

OCTOBER TAIZE – A CONTEMPLATIVE SERVICE   Taize, an ecumenical, contemplative service will be held at 5:30 pm on Sunday, October 28, at St. James Episcopal Church located at 510 N. 6th St at Ave A in Alpine. A soup, salad and bread supper will follow that is free and open to all.

Taize worship consists of meditative singing and periods of silence. This month’s universal reconciliation service will focus on readings and chants exploring Liminal Space – the places between. For more information, contact Pam at pscook.herenow@gmail.com.

A Free Bi-Partisan Shuttle Service will be available to take anyone to vote on Election Day, November 6^th from 8am – 7pm (yes, the polls open at 7 am but we are only human).  If you live within 15 miles of Study Butte, near an accessible road, we want to bring you to the poll.  You will need to be previously registered, you will need to have your voter’s registration and ID with you, but we will bring you to the poll and bring you home.  Just call 371-2226 before 8pm on Sunday, November 4^th, if you want a ride, or, want to drive folks.  This is a non-partisan service.  No politics will be spoken in the vehicle, just neighborly chit-chat.  We want everyone to have an opportunity to vote.

Terlingua Preservation Society  T18 was a resounding SUCCESS!!! Time again for TPS President David Elkowitz to pass out this year’s Big Checks to TPS’s designated charity recipients: TerlinguaCommon School District; Terlingua Fire & EMS, and Acti-Vets. This $7500 for TFEMS is their 1/3 cut from the money raised at Friday night’s auction.This $7500 for BBHS/TCSD is their 1/3 cut from the money raised at Friday night’s auction—it does *not* include the $8000 donated for two 4-year scholarships nor the $1300 or so raised directly by the students who worked Thursday afternoon’s car wash. The Superintendent liked their Big Check so much, he’s going to mount it on the wall of the faculty conference room! (Don’t worry—they’ll be cashing the regular-dimension check we provided as well.)

On Wednesday the 24th there will be a special County Commissioners meeting at the Pattillo Community Center that has an update about the proposed Terlingua clinic on the agenda. The meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. Please spread this around. And just a reminder, the Hospital District meeting is on the 25th in Presidio at 5:30 p.m. The Big Bend Hospital District offices in Presidio are on 803 W. O'Reilly St. When you get to the hard left turn to go to OJ, take a hard right instead and the office is a couple of blocks down on the left.

Taxes......Maybe the most unpopular topic ever to open a conversation with. This November voters in South Brewster County will be asked to approve a 0.5% increase in our sales tax base.  It is important to understand that this increase and the monies it can generate will ALL be used to fund the emergency services and infrastructures in South Brewster County.  None of these funds can be used outside of our Emergency Service District. The boundaries of the ESD stretch from Elephant mountain south incorporating all of Terlingua Ranch, the park, and the greater metro area of Study Butte, Terlingua, and Lajitas.   The Terlingua Fire and EMS Board of Directors urges you to vote yes on this important proposition.  Our area is growing and along with that the demands on our local infrastructures.

Brewster County Referendum to Abolish Office of County Surveyor   When Steve Walker passed away this year after serving over 30 years as County Surveyor, Brewster County Commissioners Court addressed the future need for a County Surveyor and found that the office is no longer listed as part of county government structure and most counties have abolished the office.  The County Surveyor has no responsibility to provide services to county residents and counties without a County Surveyor typically hire a licensed surveyor as needed by the county.  Brewster County Commissioners Court called a special election with the general election on November 6, 2018 to abolish the office of County Surveyor. The ballot choice is to vote for or against the proposition: “Abolishing the office of county surveyor of this county.” The office will be abolished if a majority of the voters approve the abolition.

Sara Colando for County Commissioner 

Sara Colando was born to serve the public. Since arriving in South Brewster County and opening the family business, she has been working to improve the quality of life for the people in this community. Now she has the chance to do even more! 

Brewster County is represented by resident Commissioners in North, East, and West Brewster County, but the growing South Brewster County community needs its own Commissioner. We all know Sara is compassionate, but I can tell you she is also smart, articulate, and absolutely capable of being a strong voice in our county government.  Vote for Sara!    Hugh Garrett

 PRESIDIO, TX – The Texas Department of Transportation and Texas Pacifico Transportation, LTD. (TXPF) held a groundbreaking event Monday for the reconstruction of the international rail bridge at Presidio, Texas. The rail bridge was severely damaged by fires in 2008 and 2009 and is located on the TxDOT-owned South Orient rail line, a 391-mile rail line running from the Texas-Mexico border at Presidio through San Angelo to just south of Coleman.  The South Orient is leased to TXPF, a private railroad company that operates the line and is responsible for the reconstruction of the bridge. TXPF is funding the reconstruction of the bridge, which is scheduled to be completed by September 2019.

Now she calls the Big Bend home.  She works in acrylic, oil, watercolor, and pen & ink.

Temporary Closure of the Lost Mine Trail  Big Bend NP
Big Bend National Park is temporarily closing the popular Lost Mine Trail area due to increased bear activity. The closure includes the trail, trailhead, parking area, and north facing slope of Casa Grande Peak. Alternative areas for hiking and camping in the Chisos Mountains and throughout the park remain open to the public for normal use.

District Cross Country results from October 10th in Marathon: Competing in District 10-1A were Terlingua, Marathon, Rankin, Grandfalls, Buena Vista, and Sanderson. The Terlingua Junior High team included Odalis Valenzuela, Romina Escalante, Yareli Aviles, Iram Palma, Edwing Maldonado, Chase Willard, Neila Aviles, Melenie, Orozco, Giselle Hernandez, Jenny Baeza, and Kaycie Krueger. The Big Bend High School team included Alex Guevara, Joselyn Villa, Anahy Valenzuela, Fernanda Rodriguez, Yoali Aviles, and Grace Sullivan. Those earning a Medalists award for Top 10 finishes were Odalis Valenzuela (10th), Grace Sullivan (7th), and Alex Guevara (8th). Grace and Alex are Regional Qualifiers and will compete in San Angelo on October 22nd, along with the high school girls team that received the 3rd Place Team Plaque and they will all advance to Regionals as a team. We have almost enough requests for tanks to make a freight-free Wylie load, but only 4 of those have actually confirmed. We are in an iffy situation now,
whether to cancel the load or not. Please call and let us know how you stand.
Once a full order is called in, it doesn't take long to be delivered, especially this time of year.  We won't work on another load until Spring, and those loads take longer because of farm and ranch needs elsewhere in the state. We'll be available at the home phone for sure.

Comprised of Terlingua locals, the goats are always welcome to visiting musicians sitting in, so one never knows what's in store at a goat gig.

CAR RACES

Next weekend, will be the Annual Shelby Mustang Rally, held in Brewster County. There are several events held in conjunction with this annual rally. One of the events is a high speed run along a 10 mile stretch of Highway 118, on Saturday, October 13, at 2pm. The run will last approximately 1 hour, and will close that portion of the highway during that time. However, there will be deputies posted at either end of the closure, with the ability to open the roadway in the event of an emergency.

JOIN A HIKING CLUB

My sister, Erica, and I have started a new company here in Terlingua called Big Bend Boating and Hiking Company. We are offering river trips, guided hikes, Ghost Town Tours, and Mexico tours. Also we are trying to start a hiking club. Currently we only have 1 date per month for free guided hikes. If more interest develops in our community we will add more free hikes. We would like to give everyone the opportunity to go explore our parks with us. For the free hikes we will meet up, ride in our van, and we will pay the park entrance fees. BETTE DAVIS HONORED IN MARFA - OCT 27

Marfa Live Arts and Starlight Entertainment present All About Bette: An Interlude with Bette Davis by El Paso playwright Camilla Carr on Saturday, October 27th, at the Crowley Theater with actor Morgana Shaw portraying Bette Davis, one of the greatest actresses in film history. “It’s an honor to play this legendary icon, to bring her to life and to share the complete person with the world,” said Ms. Shaw. When asked what she liked most about Ms. Carr’s script, she said, “Looking into Bette’s heart. She was a strong woman, but the documentaries rarely show you the love she had for her family. She’s always fighting for the truth. Her eyes do not lie.” Playwright Carr describes how Bette Davis will forever be remembered because she was “Brilliant. A fighter. It never occurred to her to ‘retire.’  She was never about being ‘liked.’ She was all about the work. This play, is about her, I hope it reflects what steep hurdles actors of her time had to jump.” Carr did extensive research to create a play that accurately depicts Davis and her life. She says “Bette knew how to fight because she had to fight not only for her life as an artist, but for her mother’s and for her sister’s.”

All About Bette: An Interlude with Bette Davis received such positive reviews in its early days that it drew the attention of Michael A. Jenkins, seven time-Tony Award winning producer of Starlight Entertainment and Managing Director Emeritus of Dallas Summer Musicals. Jenkins optioned Bette and has been producing it ever since. As Carr says “What she is eternally remembered for all over the world, are her fearless, evocative presentations of the characters she portrays on screen. This was her contribution to perfection.” Camilla Carr is an El Paso based playwright, screen & television writer, novelist, actress and a three-time recipient of the Hollywood Drama Logue Award. The 10th Annual Terlingua GREEN SCENE Festival will be on Saturday, October 27 in the Ghostown!
We need volunteers, donors, performers, vendors, and demonstrators to make this celebration the best ever!  The Terlingua Community Garden has grown so much in the past 10 years, and we look forward to sharing our love for Terlingua Sustainability with You!  For more information, check out our website at www.terlinguagreenscene.org today.
There are several ways you can help.  Please consider helping us out this year!  There are four easy ways to participate:
-Volunteer:  We always need more hands to help with setup, cleanup, planning and organization.
-Demonstrate.  Anyone with an interning idea for a demonstration should reply to terlinguagreenscene@gmail.com
   We love learning what everyone can teach us about building, gardening, art, and sustainability.
-Sell.  Vendors must register with us to secure their spot at the Festival.  Forms an other helpful info is on our website.
-Perform.  We’re on the lookout for local talent to sing, dance, and entertain all day and night.

GALERIA CHISOS:  To celebrate the arrival of Autumn and cooler weather, Galeria Chisos will be having a sale on store jewelry and rocks & mineral items!  Starting Wednesday and going through Saturday they will be 30% OFF.   We recently returned from Denver with new merchandise, so come in and check out our new items.  Mention the Moon to receive your discount.  Our hours are 10 till 6 Monday through Saturday.

Otra Vez Thrift Shop, part of the Big Bend Episcopal Mission, will reopen on Saturday, September 29th from 9am-12pm. Until more volunteers return, the shop will be open on Saturdays only. There will be a Bag Sale: $5 per bag including clothes and shoes. Also, an anonymous donor has purchased $500 worth of diaper/feminine products. These are all FREE! Please spread the word and come pick up what you can use, while supplies last. Thank you to all of the community for supporting the Thrift Shop with purchases and donations. In just the past 2 years, the following outreach has been possible with the store's profits: 2017: $1,000 Fire recovery, $100 medical bills help for cancer treatment, $1,000 to Hurricane Harvey relief and 2018: $200 toward Missionary Scholarship, $500 toward vehicle help, $2,000 Fire recovery. The donation jar for School Kids has also contributed $80 a family's travel needs, $100 spending money for Field trip, and $40 towards desserts for the high school Prom. the the past we have also purchased a oven, an air conditioner, and a heater for locals. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and please let the volunteers know if you know of a special community need. We are hopefully that the new priest in Alpine and Marfa, Father Mike Wallens, will be able to hold services at Santa Inez in the Ghostown soon. Stay tuned.

Marfa Live Arts and Starlight Entertainment will present All About Bette: An Interlude with Bette Davis, a play that celebrates the life and work of Bette Davis on Saturday, October 27 at the Crowley Theater.
Bette Davis’ entire life was a drama with comedic episodes. With nothing but raw talent and raw determination, she became the most famous woman in the world, taking on the Hollywood studio system, the FBI and the Catholic Church. In fact, she requested, “SHE DID IT THE HARD WAY” to be etched onto her tombstone.
All About Bette stars Morgana Shaw (Salem, Friday Night Lights, Walker Texas Ranger) who fully embodies and becomes Bette, sharing and revealing her tumultuous ride through the male dominated golden era of Hollywood. Candy is an adorable, healthy Chihuahua/Boston Terrier Mix that is as sweet as can be. She is 6 years old, but age is only a number! Candy enjoys going for walks, loves to ride in the car and will be your best friend if you let her sit in the front seat! She is looking for someone that will be patient with her as she is fearful of most people until she gets to know them. Candy is house trained, spayed and fully vaccinated.
