Partial Lunar Eclipse: 96.5% Partial 9:33 PM - 12:52 AM Terlingua will see a partial lunar eclipse on August 27, 2026 with up to 96.5% moon coverage for 3h 18m from 9:33 PM to 12:52 AM CDT.

Perseids Meteor Shower: Occurring from July 17- August 24, peak August 12-13. Made of tiny space debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle, the Perseids are named after the constellation Perseus. This is because the direction, or radiant, from which the shower seems to come in the sky lies in the same direction as Perseus. The Perseids are widely sought after by astronomers and stargazers because most years at its peak, one can see 60 to 100 meteors in an hour from a dark place.

FLOOD DAMAGE? REPORT IT
Due to the recent natural disasters affecting our region, Rio Grande Electric Cooperative is helping our local government share important recovery information with the community.

If your home or business sustained flood damage, one of the most important things you can do is document all damage before beginning cleanup or repairs. Take clear photographs, save receipts, and keep records of labor, materials, and repair costs. This documentation is important for insurance claims, disaster damage assessments, and any future assistance programs that may become available.

Residents and business owners are also encouraged to complete the TDEM iSTAT Damage Survey, which helps the State of Texas assess the overall impact of the disaster. Please note: The iSTAT survey is not an application for financial assistance, but it is a critical step in determining whether assistance may become available.

JERRY STEPHENSON – OBITUARY
My dad passed away from a heart attack last Thursday at his home on Terlingua Ranch. He was the most eccentric, brilliant, and impossibly independent person I have ever known.

My dad stubbornly and unapologetically lived life on his own terms, right up until the end. His fierce need for self-reliance was matched only by his kind and giving heart. He gave without question or judgment to strangers, friends, and family alike. To me, he gave the world.

He supported and encouraged almost everything I ever did—or tried to do—with one exception: the time I wanted to join the crew of a boat in Indonesia. For the first time, he begged me not to do something. Why? Pirates.

I laughed at him, then looked up pirate attacks off the coast of Indonesia. He was absolutely right. I did not go.

There are so many stories to tell about this interesting, quirky man who was fifty years ahead of his time, but they are not for today. For now, all I can say is that I loved him so very much, and I am immensely grateful to have had the great fortune of being his daughter.

A message to the community from Jerri: I'm so touched and honored by the thoughtful comments and messages you all have sent about my dad Jerry R Stephenson. After his accident a few years ago, the West Texas Food Bank generously provided food to him when his mobility and funds were limited. For those of you who may wish to honor him after his passing, I ask that you donate in memory of his life to the WTFB. I hope to have a celebration of life for him later this year in October or November in Terlingua if any of you are interested. Thank you!  - Jerri Stephenson

KEEP BIG BEND WILD!
There are increasing indications that groundbreaking border-related work may begin in our beloved Big Bend National Park in the next few weeks, AGAINST THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.  If you see any activity by CBP or its contractors that look like they are planning or starting construction activities in the national park, please take photos, and get as much information as you can – company logos, what they are doing, where they are doing it, etc.  Send that info to info@keepbigbendwild.org. Help us make noise!  We hope not, but it may take documentation of something truly egregious to turn this tide.  But please do not obstruct or otherwise interfere with any activities by DHS officials, employees or their contractors, as such behavior could well constitute a serious Federal offense. KBBW does not encourage or support this.

Have you seen the more detailed plans now on CBP’s site for the grossly destructive road over Mariscal Mountain?  Blow up the so-called “ Smart Wall” map (https://www.cbp.gov/border-security/along-us-borders/smart-wall-map) as much as possible and you can see the switchbacks they propose.  The road would rise 1700 feet above the river, and it would require explosives and massive blasting to construct this absolutely unnecessary patrol road. The blasting would also likely drive away, if not destroy, the habitat of endangered peregrine falcons.  Mariscal Canyon also happens to be have the highest density of peregrine nests in Texas.  How many people are likely to cross the Rio in the canyon, scale the vertical walls, and be apprehended by the Border Patrol on top of the mesa?  WE CAN STOP THIS!

SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET - 8-1 Set-Up Donation Waived!
First Saturday of August already!! We can hardly believe how fast this summer is going by. First Saturday means set-up fee waived, vendors set up free this Saturday Community Market, open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Located in the Ghost Town, down in the Community Garden,  we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, sour dough bread, jelly, pickles, all natural lip balms and skin care products, all natural essential oil fragrances, beard oil and massage oils, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here. 

Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. 

We welcome new vendors. To make it easy for new vendors to try our market and to show our appreciation to our regular vendors, we waive set-up fees on the first Saturday of the month, offering free set-up on that day.
