NO WALL ACTION - YOU ARE NEEDED TODAY - MONDAY, JULY 13, 2026
KEEP BIG BEND WILD has sent in our comments to CBP with specific, point-by-point suggestions for them to exercise restraint and follow CBP Commissioner Scott’s stated commitment of  "responsible stewardship of the land and [to] minimize harm to the greatest extent practicable" in Big Bend National Park.  We’ve posted a Call to Action which makes it easy for others to make similar points – it’s essential we flood them with as many comments with specific, practical suggestions for how they can modify their proposal – as irrational as that proposal is.  
 
There’s still time to send in your comments.  Do it.  Please.  We don’t know if they will take them seriously.  But we do know that if we don’t overwhelm them with comments, they’ll be able to say that their destructive plans did not raise any significant objections. Comments are due 7/13/26.

Here are the key points we encourage you to make in your comments – there’s more detail at the Call to Action link above.

    Data show that the border adjoining the national park is not an area of high illegal entry. There’s no emergency requiring immediate action.  Slow down, analyze the comments, modify your plans. 
    Honor CBP Commissioner Scott’s commitments to minimize unnecessary impacts to Big Bend National Park, eliminating all plans that are an any way inconsistent with his commitments.  
    Eliminate vehicle barriers east and west of Mariscal Canyon as there is no vehicle access in Mexico across the Rio Grande at these locations.
    Restrict proposed vehicle barriers near Lajitas and downstream of Boquillas Canyon to lands outside the national park, and they will accomplish the same purpose without impacting NPS lands and resources.
    Rather than build any new patrol roads in the park, upgrade the existing unpaved River Road to the standard agreed to by the NPS and USBP years ago.
    Do not pave any existing or new roads in the park. 
    Delete the section of new road north of Mesa de Anguila.
    Do not build a road across Mariscal Mountain or any other place in the park that would require blasting or construction of switchbacks.
    Do not locate any new patrol roads within any existing NPS visitor or administrative facilities, 
    Reconsider the proposed hardwired sensor configuration requiring communications and power cables, and improve or enhance the existing sensor network with updated wireless technology and solar/battery power.
    In lieu of fixed, hardwired sensors, deploy advanced aerial surveillance systems, including high altitude drones that cannot be detected by casual observers on the ground.
    Keep any laydown or staging areas to existing paved sites in the park or, preferably, use areas outside park boundaries. 
    Do not build a construction camp or house workers anywhere inside Big Bend National Park.
    Truck in all water needed for construction activities from water-abundant areas outside of Brewster County rather than overtax the park and county’s existing wells and delivery systems. 
    Do not install lights on any new infrastructure in the national park.

Come see us at the Saturday Community Market, open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Located in the Ghost Town, down in the Community Garden, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, sour dough bread, jelly, pickles, all natural lip balms and skin care products, all natural essential oil fragrances, beard oil and massage oils, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here. 

Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. 

We welcome new vendors. To make it easy for new vendors to try our market and to show our appreciation to our regular vendors, we waive set-up fees on the first Saturday of the month, offering free set-up on that day.

MOBILE VET CLINIC
I want to let you know that Alpine Humane Society, in collaboration with Operation Kindness, Be Veterinary Consulting, Petco Love, and the State of Texas, is bringing back the Free Terlingua Pet Clinic at the Red Patillo Community Center, 201 Rex Ivey Rd, Study Butte, TX, on Friday, August 28th, and Saturday, August 29th.

If your Pet received vaccinations from us at last year’s clinic, they will be due again at the same time this year. Wellness services will be available daily from 10 am to 4 pm on a walk-in basis. If you need spay or neuter surgery, it will be by appointment on a limited basis.
