FARMER NEEDS OUR HELP
On February 8, far to the South, beneath the soaring condors and the formidable Andes mountains, I (CR Farmer) will be careening across the Patagonian steppe atop the celebrated Criollo horses of the Argentinian Gauchos on my way (hopefully) towards the finish line of the 2024 Gaucho Derby. Thanks to a group called The Equestrianists, who also organize and run the Mongol Derby every August, those of us who have always fantasized of riding fast and free across wild landscapes like the days of old have an outlet such delusions - not to mention competition! The Gaucho Derby is a 10 day, 500km, multi-horse endurance race that brings 40 riders together from around the world to test their horsemanship, survival skills, and their own personal limits.
The ride commences outside of El Calafate, Argentina and eventually ends near El Chalten, in the shadow of the immeasurably beautiful Mt. Fitz Roy (which resembles a much bigger Mule Ears). Riders are tasked with navigating via GPS to checkpoints along the way and must get themselves and their horses to each check-point in good shape (also known as “fit to continue” in the sport of endurance riding). The world of endurance riding is all about horsemanship and horse welfare - there are vet check points all along the way to make sure the horses are kept in good condition and the riders are taking care of them properly. What is different about this endurance adventure, though, is that contestants must ally with unfamiliar horses and ride across unfamiliar terrain with nothing but their own wits and orienteering and horsemanship skills to get them to where they need to go. Each rider draws a number out of a hat to determine which horse they will team up with for the next leg of the race. Competitors will draw seven horses total en route to the finish line from mixed herds of Criollos, Arabians, Draft crosses, and other breeds provided by locals. The Derby is coordinated with local landowners who graciously allow participants to ride across their estancias in pursuit of this bootless errand, and (I’m told) love to share their mutton and malbec with the weary travelers - although on most nights, contestants are on their own - camping out in the wilderness with whatever MREs or backpacking meals they’ve brought to comfort them.
What does it take to make it to the starting line? It takes a lot of time, effort, preparation, coordination, money, blind faith, and perhaps a bit of a death wish. My hope is to simply enjoy the ride (ha) and the adventure of it all, and to make it to the finish line in one piece. The overarching motto of the sport of equestrian endurance is “To Finish is to Win,” and for me that is the ultimate goal. I would never want to race so fast I miss all of the guanaco and flamingo sightings (or the Malbec tastings). If any of this interests you, you’ll be able to follow my GPS beacon in real time as I navigate the race from The Equestrianists website. Check https://equestrianists.com/gaucho-derby/ for updates.
One of the side quests we are tasked with leading up to the race is to raise money for a charity of our choice. I have chosen the Terlingua based dog rescue The Underground Dog - who has been tirelessly rescuing as many strays as possible, not just here in Terlingua, but from a staggeringly large swath of the West Texas frontier. The tenacity and determination of this organization is legendary and my hope is that I can help them raise enough money to ease some of their financial burdens so they can keep fighting the good fight.
So if it moves you, please consider donating to help this small, rural organization keep rescuing all the lost souls/sweet angels in need. One hundred percent of your donation goes straight to TUD. https://gofund.me/9ea0f632 Thank you for reading <3
REST IN PEACE KATHY HOWARD
Kathy Howard, former Terlingua resident, passed away January 10 in El Paso. Kathy and her partner Jack, hosted a popular bloody Mary brunch for many years at their home. She welcomed all and loved to cook and entertain. Condolences and remembrances can be shared at sunsetfuneralhomes.net under her obituary, Kathleen Anne Howard.
GOFUNDME DONATIONS FOR PATRICK SMITH
This fall our father suffered a series of medical issues that made living off-grid in the West Texas desert no longer safe or practical as he will need to be near medical care for weekly visits. Being 8 hours drive from a hospital is not sustainable at this point. As these medical events were severe & sudden, neither he nor his family were financially prepared for the need to quickly establish a new residence for him near his family in Austin. His Medicaid has not yet been processed and his full social security check is only enough to cover 75% of rent for a basic one bedroom. He is looking for help getting his housing expenses covered while he waits for Medicaid and affordable housing to become available. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

COMMUNITY GARDEN
Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're there every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.
Local art, handcrafted textile goods, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms and skin care products, essential oil perfumes, Zoey's leather goods, handcrafted, creative jewelry, including Kim's, many made with local stones, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel, Sandy's super cute pop-up shop and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here. Indeed, lately, chess players have been meeting up for a game or two or three.
We welcome new vendors. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com or pop in to the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).
Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.
