Thank you so much to those of you that attended Lisa Sullivan’s, Texas Suicide Prevention Collaborative, presentation of the AS+K protocol. If you missed it, please don’t think this was your last chance! We are working on getting instructors trained to teach this very class in our region!

Please mark your calendars for Mental Health First Aid! September 30th and October 1st! 8:30-4:30, brought to us by PermiaCare! You won’t need to attend both days.   This class helps us understand the warning signs of mental illness, substance abuse and teaches us what resources are available and how to respond to persons in need. Help me expand our net of preparedness and join us!

Terlingua Fire & EMS is greatly saddened by the loss of Alan Baker.

Alan was an integral part of TFEMS and was instrumental in the creation of this organization. Alan was a wonderful human being who had a contagiously positive attitude. His passion for this organization and service to the people of South County energized and lifted those around him. Alan's impact was world-changing for this community and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.

John Alanson Baker died at his home in Terlingua Ranch on August 19, 2022 with his family by his side.  He was 83.   He was proceeded in death by his parents and his lifelong partner of 50 years Al Shipman.

Alan was born on May 22, 1939, in Austin, Texas to John "Lyle" Alanson Baker and Anna Boone Baker.  He graduated from Baylor University as a Certified Public Accountant.  He went on to work  20 years for Colortime as a lead accountant before he and Al moved to Terlingua Ranch in 1987.

They loved the Big Bend and their Terlingua Ranch community,  stepping up as dedicated community volunteers at countless events over the next 30 years.  Allan went on to serve on the Terlingua Ranch Board as a member, treasurer, and president off and on from the early nineties to 2004.  In 2005 he took on the position of Executive Director for the newly formed Terlingua Fire and Emergency Medical Services. He served his community in this role till his retirement in December of 2020.  Never one to be idle, he also took on bookkeeping for Big Bend Stone/ Lajitas Stables from 2015 to 2021.

Alan was loved by all.  Throughout his extraordinary life he never met a stranger.  He had an open-door policy and threw some great parties for his family and friends.   Travel was something he enjoyed,  in particular trips along the eastern seaboard.  For his 75th birthday, Allan traveled with his son and son-in-law to Germany.  Too much fun was had by all!

Those left to honor and cherish the life of Alan is his son Kenneth Alanson Baker and his partner Ricky Salazar Baker.  He also leaves his grand dogs Sapo and Loki, and his many beloved friends gathered over his lifetime.

His memorial will be at the Community Center in Study Butte, Terlingua, on the 25th of September from 12:00 to 3:00 pm.  It will be a potluck in honor of all the wonderful parties he hosted.

Services were entrusted to Alpine Memorial Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at: www.alpinememorialfuneralhome.com

Hello everyone! Kathy Wisdom and I will be hosting a haunted house fundraiser called The Desert Massacre on October 22 and October 23.  The proceeds will go to a non profit called Busuleba AC which help abandoned or neglected children in Chihuahua City and the other half will go towards a community member in need. I have spoken to many of you and know several are on board, but we will need all the volunteers we can get! We need people to help set up and also actors for the haunted house, and for clean up. If you are interested please reach out to one of us. It will be located in the crisis center. This is a wonderful cause and will be so much fun for our locals and tourists alike. So let's come together and scare some people and raise some money
