Early Remote Voting – TODAY AND TOMORROW!  Tuesday, February 22, 2022 and Wednesday, February 23, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the J.W. “Red” Pattillo Community Center in Study Butte.  This is early voting for the March 1 Democrat and Republican primary elections for Precincts 5, 6, and 7.  Sample ballots and the complete voting schedule are available at http://www.brewstercountytx.com/vote/.

Terlingua Recycles ‑‑ just a reminder that we are open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, depending on the weather of course.  We are located on Road Runner Circle, the road going to the school, on the left side of the road behind the ballpark.

Curbside Covid-19 Testing  ‑‑ Big Bend Regional Medical Center is now expanding hours for our Curbside Covid-19 Testing!  Beginning February 21, we will be curbside testing Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.  Morning tests should receive results the same day, depending on the volume of tests.  For more information regarding our curbside testing, go to bigbendhealthcare.com and click the yellow banner at the top of the page.

The Big Bend High School Purobots, Team #11720, ranked 14th out of 36 teams at the Panhandle Regional Championship held at Lubbock High School on February 19th.  Their teacher is Brad Anthenat and those participating were Zach E., Ethan, Melenie, and Romina.  Congratulations!

               Big Bend High School's application was 1 of 250 schools chosen in the nation by the Vans Shoes team to move onto the next round of the High School Custom Culture 2022 contest!  They will be getting one pair of Authentics and one pair of Slip-Ons to customize as part of the competition.  Go Paisanos!

AlienFest ‑‑ the annual Glenn Felts Memorial Alien Abduction Party (aka AlienFest) is happening this weekend, Feb. 25th and 26^th, at the Goat Pens featuring live music and entertainment, including Terlingua Burlesque (Friday night) and The Red Elvises (Saturday night).  Saturday's daytime events are for all ages and family friendly, featuring all-day open mic hosted by DB Rouse.  Artists and vendors are welcome to come showcase your work and sell your wares.  We will have some food for sale but feel free to bring a picnic.  Beer and seltzers for sale at the bar; nighttime events are 21+.  See you there!  Dress for outer space!

TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE
Wednesday, March 2, 2022 @ 5:30 P.m. Come celebrate the 186th anniversary of Texas Independence  from Mexico with the annual impromptu parade between the Porch and the High Sierra celebrating the sacrifices of those who won our freedom that has been so easily forgotten by native Texans and unknown by the naturalized and visitors. The parade is scheduled to begin around 5:30 P.m. (but is notoriously late) at the Porch.  The route will leave for the High Sierra, then turn around back to the Porch.  Gathering for the parade will be at any time necessary for the preparation of your "float" to make the 5:30 start.  Please try to attend with a float or just as a spectator.  Hope to see you there!

Fundraiser to Bring Veterinarian to South County

In our efforts to provide a veterinarian for the community of South Brewster, we have been presented with challenges and need some help getting Letty down to our community. Letty had the opportunity to meet with Doc Sam; it was a productive meeting. We need help with relocating Letty and getting her certified in Texas to be south county’s new vet. The funds raised will go for helping move her here from Illinois to be with her husband Jon Risley who has established living in our community already. We have the property in place just off 118. We have the support of Alpine Humane Society with mobile donation units.  Due to the challenges we have all faced we are turning to our community for help and to reestablish a vet that fell in love with our community. Second Saturday Art Mart

Hello, fellow artists and craftspeople! Earth and Fire Gallery will be hosting “Second Saturday Art Mart” every month. This event will be a place for local artists and craftspeople to set up their art for sale or show. It will located in front of Earth and Fire Gallery from 9am till 2pm  each second Saturday of the month, so this is the weekend coming up. Artists need to bring their own displays, tables, chairs and ways of making change. All work must be locally handmade items. We are looking to create a venue filled with art, inspiration, fun and camaraderie here in the Terlingua area. From Mr. Anthenat: Congratulations to the Purobots robotics team. They traveled to UTEP on 2/5/22 to compete in the FTC League Championship. For the first time in our team history, they competed in the championship round and  placed 6th overall out of 15 teams.

From Mrs. Reed: Juniors and Seniors enjoyed a Geology Presentation and visit from Professor Jessie Kelsch of Sul Ross University. Biology students participated in a Zoom meeting with Graduate & PhD student and researcher Justice Brakache from Kennesaw State University in Georgia where they learned about continuing education opportunities in the fields of Biotechnology and Genetics.

Santa Inez Ghostown Church/Otra Vez Thrift Shop

All are welcome to attend a Volunteer & Patron Appreciation Soup Supper on Thursday, February 17th from 5pm-6pm outside at the Otra Vez Thrift Shop. Come by for some soup and sweets in honor of those that put in their time, efforts, and donations to keep the shop going and those that buy from the store which allows for the $1,000s that has gone back into our community to help those in need. Bishop Michael Hunn of the Diocese of the Rio Grande, headquartered in Alb.,NM will also be in town for a visit.

Last Minute Low Budget Productions would like to tip our collective hat to our dear friend, Pablo Menudo, in taking to a greater stage.  Pablo was a fixture for our community theater adventures for well over a decade  - as construction volunteer, backstage crew, and who-could-ever forget - an on stage actor.  Best we can come up with, Pablo was on stage in at least ten different shows:

We delighted in the time we spent with Pablo - so many stories!  We know his star from our stage, - now we watch for it in the sky.  

 

Well done, Terlingua!  There was a total of 46 residents that came for boosters today at the clinic provided by the TX National Guard out of El Paso. And 11 people came in for testing.

 

A big shout out to Espresso y Poco Mas and Mimi Webb Miller and her crew for once again providing breakfast for this team! And to Mague Garcia for helping translate for our Hispanic community! Nothing better than a community helping each other!

 

Paisano Post from Terlingua CSD   From Mrs. Mendoza:  Spanish Class Salsa Competition Results: 1st Place- Laila, 2nd Place- Rigoberto, 3rd Place- Gabriel. There were 13 entries total. Judges: Adam Daley, Brad Anthenat, Isael Rodriguez, Victor Garcia, Jennifer Contreras and Haziel Galindo.

From Mrs. Baumann: The sixth graders wrote to other sixth graders in the United States before Christmas break telling them about our school and community. One of the students has received letters from Olympia, Washington! The 7th grade has been experimenting with Slam or Performance poetry. They wrote poems then presented them to the class. After 3 rounds of performance, Bailee was declared the winner. The class is developing some very good poets.

TERLINGUA RECLING -- We are open every Saturday from 10 to Noon depending on the weather. We are on the road to the school on the left behind the ballpark. There is a sign on the road, and you can see the trailer.  We take Aluminum cans, Tin cans, Cardboard, and #1&2 Plastic without the caps please.

 

There will be no food distribution Friday or any other events at the CRISIS CENTER until we reopen.  We are closed due to illness. We will announce when we have determined a date to open the office. In the meantime, if you need an advocate, please call us at 432-837-7254 and one of our Alpine staff will assist you. Thank you all for your understanding as we work hard to prioritize the safety and health of our staff and the community.

Super Bowl Potluck Sunday at the American Legion Post 653.   Doors open at 4pm and the game starts at 530pm.  

Bring your favorite Super Bowl snack to share.  All tips going to help support sending Big Bend High School students to this year's Texas Boys' State in Austin, TX.  It's going to be a great day at the American Legion.

 

The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte. We wear masks during the meeting and observe distancing.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.
