KEEP BIG BEND WILD!
The KBBW team is in Washington this week, spending time every day in meetings on Capitol Hill with congressional staff from both parties and both houses of Congress. This follows a successful hearing last week on HR 2323, Big Bend Boundary Expansion Bill, as we wrote about last week. Rep. Pfluger (R-TX-11), Rep Stansbury (D-NM-1), and Rep. Randall (D-WA-6) spoke eloquently in favor of protecting Big Bend at the hearing. We truly do have bipartisan support.
Our visit follows on the heels of Hill visits by our allies in the No Big Bend Wall coalition. We will build on their eloquent descriptions of how the border construction has already begun, and is devastating the greater Big Bend area. We will discuss legislative strategies to pass laws that will enact the protections we need to see to stop these assaults and prevent them from recurring ever again. With the bipartisan, national attention Big Bend is receiving, this is very possible.
The House is in recess so there’s no opportunity to meet with any representatives; but meeting with key staff is frequently just as effective, as they do the legwork behind the scenes. We have confirmed meetings with staff of Texas Reps. Pfluger, Fletcher (D-TX-7), Weber (R-TX-14), Escobar (D-TX-16), Menefee (D-TX-18), Cuellar (D-TX-28), Veasey (D-TX-33), and Doggett (D-TX-37). We will also be meeting directly with Senator Cornyn R-TX, albeit it will be a very short meeting based on his busy schedule.
We’ll also meet with both Republican and Democratic staff of the House Natural Resources Committee, and Democratic staff of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Both committees will be critical if a “Protect Big Bend Forever” bill is to pass the Congress in the next term. Keep Big Bend Wild’s long-term goal is permanent, legislative protection, including a rollback of the authority DHS has to operate at will without accountability. With enough support, and enough voices, we will put brakes on the insanity and create binding legal protection for the park that can’t be waived at the whim of whatever administration is in power.
The short-term goal is to stop the funding for the border construction here during this year’s lame duck session via an Appropriations Committee amendment. That’s a long shot, but worth trying.
To pass Congress, we need supporters and sponsors who are on both sides of the aisle, and from states other than Texas, especially border states. Hence we have meetings set up with staff from Rep. Randall’s office, both Arizona Senators’ offices (Kelly and Gallego, both D), Rep. Grijalva (D-AZ-7); both New Mexico Senators (Heinrich and Lujan, both D); and all three NM Reps (Stansbury D-1, Vasquez D-2, and Leger-Fernandez, D-3). We’ve also got NY Rep Tonko (D-NY-21) on our schedule, a great supporter of public lands.
These are just the confirmed meetings; we have pending meeting requests in with a number of other Reps, both Rs and Ds. It’ll be a hectic week, and we expect to post regular updates on our social media.

MARK eYeBALL KNEESKERN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - TERLINGUA MUSIC BASH
It's less than a month until the 31st Annual Terlingua Music Bash (October 15-18). The Bash is hosted by Cabin 10, Inc. (a 501 (c)(3) and funds the Mark (eYeBall) Kneeskern Memorial Art Scholarship which is awarded to a graduating senior of Terlingua High School each year. For the school year ending in May 2026, a scholarship was awarded to 2 individuals. One was awarded to graduating senior, Ervey Sotelo, of the class of 2026. The second scholarship was a renewal of the Scholarship presented last year to Caitlin Staib who continues her pursuit of a degree in Fine Arts.
The scholarship funds are raised by way of a silent auction. This year’s auction will take place on the 17th of October. If you would be able to once again donate an item to the auction (or for the first time), we would be most appreciative. The Bash begins on Thursday, October 15 at 5:00 p.m. at The Whitmore’s. It is a 3-hour open mic/ meet and greet. From the Whitmore's, we’ll move to La Kiva (8:30 p.m. - close) for a continued party with The Starhill Players with Kelli King, Miss Neesie and Sara Flatten.
We know that most people in the Terlingua community have a lot weighing on their hearts and minds these days and are contributing so much to halt the efforts by federal officials and out-of-state contractors to destroy the Big Bend Sector/ Rio Grande Corridor. Cabin 10 is adamantly opposed to this work - not just in our national and state parks but against the property of private landowners, archaeological site, tribal lands and more . . . from Hudspeth County through Val Verde County.

Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.
We welcome new vendors. To make it easy for new vendors to try our market and to show our appreciation to our regular vendors, we waive set-up fees on the first Saturday of the month, offering free set-up on that day.
