RESCHEDULED TRI-COUNTY VOTER PROMOTERS MEETING ‑‑ Tri-County Voter Promoters will meet at the Alpine Public Library at 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 11th. We will be organizing voter registration efforts throughout the tri-county area (Jeff Davis, Brewster, Presidio counties) during the month of January, prior to the January 31st registration deadline for the 2022 primary elections.

As in the past, we plan to register voters at grocery stores, post offices, food distribution centers, and other locations in Jeff Davis County (Fort Davis, Valentine, Davis Mountains Resort), Brewster County (Alpine, Marathon, Study Butte, Terlingua), and Presidio County (Marfa, Presidio). We need volunteers to help staff voter registration tables at these locations. We are especially short on Spanish speakers.
ANCIENT ROCK ART VANDALIZED ‑‑ On December 26th, a panel of ancient petroglyphs in the Indian Head area of Big Bend National Park was irreparably damaged when vandals chose to boldly scratch their names and the date across the prehistoric art. Anyone with information about the incidents, or the persons involved, should contact the National Park Service. BIG BEND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETING NOTICE ‑‑ the next meeting of the Big Bend Chamber of Commerce is Thursday, January 13, 2022. It will be held at the Lajitas Golf Resort in the Executive Boardroom beginning at 6:00 P.M. All chamber members and interested parties are welcome to attend. FREE HEALTH FAIR ‑‑ Big Bend Regional Hospital District is having a free community health fair on Monday, January 17, 2022 fPOSTPONED!
THE TERLINGUA BOTTOMS GROUP OF AA ‑‑ meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte. We wear masks during the meeting and observe distancing. The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem. If you are ill, we respectfully ask that you stay home and call for a "telephone meeting" instead, 432-371-2073. EARTH & FIRE GALLERY ‑‑ will be hosting our first Guest Artists reception of 2022. We are very excited to have Molly Dumas and Zoey Sexton as our January guest artists. The reception will be this Saturday, January 15th at the Gallery in the Ghost Town starting at around 5:00 P.M. and running till about 8:30. Come for the art, food, conversation and camaraderie. The Brewster County Tourism Council ‑‑ will host Human Trafficking Prevention training on February 14th and again on February 15th. The training will be free of charge for all hotel employees in Brewster County and is required by House Bill 390 which requires all full-time, part-time, and seasonal hotel employees to receive annual human trafficking prevention training. The training will be conducted by the Texas Hotel Lodging Association along with a Q&A session for our lodging partners with local law enforcement and a THLA staff member.
There will be an additional opportunity for the public to learn how the tourism council, or Visit Big Bend, operates followed by a Q&A, which will take place February 15th at 9:30 A.M., and a Brewster County Tourism Council meeting at 2:00 P.M.
The first training will be held on February 14th in Study Butte at Far Flung Outdoor Center in the Oasis Meeting room at 10:00 A.M. The tourism seminar will be held February 15th beginning at 9:30 A.M. in the same location. For more information or to register to attend, please call the tourism council office at 432-837-3915.
Terlingua Store Yoga ‑‑ will be open for business January 20-30 on limited schedule due to Kate being out of pocket. Check our FB Page or PM Kate to learn about awesome Guest Instructors who will be coming in to teach classes in her absence. Hooray! It takes a Village - and we are very happy to share that we have support to keep our sweet Studio open when Kate has to travel back east for a bit.
Editor Note – the beautiful Verdin photographed in my hands was the victim of flying into glass. Unfortunately, when you build a house with a lot of glass, birds will invariably fly into it. When I heard that heart-breaking thump of bird hitting glass, I went out and found this little creature unconscious on the ground. After a couple of minutes in my hands, it re-oriented, flew up on my head, then off to a perch on the porch before flying away. Happy ending!
