FIREFIGHTERS AIDED BY WEATHER An increase in cooler temperatures and higher humidity has significantly paused growth of the South Rim 4 fire over the past 24 hours to 1,341 acres and 60% containment. Because there are no control lines in the rocky country, it will take at least several days of monitoring and "cold trailing" to check for hot spots, to increase further containment numbers.
Update: Big Bend Fire Suppression Evolves to Repair Crews Work to Clear Trails, Assess Fire Impacts. With increased success in fire containment and no growth in fire acreage, firefighters at Big Bend National Park have changed the focus from fire suppression to rehabilitation of damaged areas and repair.
Updated Update: SOUTH RIM FIREFIGHTERS CONTINUE TO MAKE PROGRESS. Hotspots remain in Boot Canyon and Juniper Canyon areas, but the size of the South Rim Fire continues to hold at 1,341 acres with containment at 60%. Hotshot crews will demobilize today (4/19/21), but the Diablos will remain on the scene. Fire personnel will continue to monitor the fire area and aid with rehabilitation of damaged areas. Bucket drops by helicopter will continue as needed.

Town Hall Meeting Brewster County Commissioner Sara Allen Colando will hold a town hall meeting on Saturday, April 24th 11:00 AM at the Red Pattillo Community Center to answer questions about Dark Sky Preservation measures in the tri-county area. We'll be focusing on the County's outdoor lighting ordinance, the recent debate over legislation to amend the tax code, and what "dark sky friendly" lighting practices look like. If the weather is nice, we'll stay outside on the Community Center front porch. If we have to move the meeting inside, mask wearing is recommended per CDC guidelines. I hope to see you there!
Be thoughtful Many of us share a dumpster and their fees. Costs are going up on everything imaginable. Be mindful of the honest, proportional sharing of your cost in relation to your allotment of dumpster space. Simply put: If you know 5 people are sharing, DO NOT take more than 1/5th of the dumpster space in a total week's time; from Thursday to Thursday. Be considerate; play fair.
Broadband Survey Are you tired of unreliable internet - or no internet at all!? Connected Nation Texas and the Tri-County Broadband Initiative (Brewster, Presidio, and Jeff Davis Counties) are conducting an assessment of the current broadband environment to determine usage, access, and needs of our communities. The survey responses will be used to inform a local technology action plan to improve the broadband infrastructure of the tri-county area. Basecamp Terlingua is looking for one or more full or part-time housekeepers. Pay starts at $12 but will move up to $15 if it’s a good fit. All full-time employees are guaranteed a salary of $40,000 after 9 months of employment. Must be hard-working, have strong attention to detail and be a team player. Must be available weekends. The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte. We wear masks during the meeting, and observe distancing. The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem. If you are ill, we respectfully ask that you stay home and call for a "telephone meeting" instead, 432-371-2073. From Ms. Reed: Competition Results from UIL Regional Academics held April 16-17th at Angelo State University: STATE BOUND: Caelan Devine Ryan: 1st Place Science, Top Biology Score, Top Physics Score, and 2nd Place Team. Additional team members earning 2nd Place Science Team out of 8 Teams were Chasin 24th, Jennifer C. 41st, and Maria 45th. STATE BOUND: Melenie Orozco, 2nd Place in Headline Writing. Also, representing the school's debut at Regionals, as a team, in Computer Science, and earning 4th place out of 8 teams: Jakeline 7th, Brody 8th, Kaycie 12th, and Ethan 14th.

Water Testing Kits Water testing kits will be available at Terlingua Ranch Lodge HQ this Saturday April 24th at noon. $10.00 each. (All the free ones are already gone.) Fresh water samples must be dropped off for testing in Alpine May 4 between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.
The Groundwater District is trying to arrange a pickup in Terlingua but they don't know for sure yet. If they can't pick them up for us, let's try to "carpool" our samples. Please see flyer for details about the water sampling.
Women Veterans Program The WVP will be participating in multiple events this month. Topics include: Connecting Women Veterans to Benefits and Services; Into the Light: Military Sexual Trauma; Women Warrior Empowerment; Uncommon Cents: Building a Solid Financial Foundation. These FREE events are open to all veterans and veteran supporters are encouraged to attend. And, don't forget about our Financial Wellness Series that's kicking off this week.
