Big Bend National Park – Following rains this past week, Big Bend National Park’s fire danger has been reduced to Moderate, prompting park managers to remove restrictions that had been in place to protect park visitors and park resources during the past months of extreme fire danger.

Juniper Flats, Boulder Meadows, and Pinnacles backpacking sites are now open for camping. The park additionally has removed the temporary ban on charcoal fires and smoking in the Chisos Campground. The park would like to remind visitors that while fire danger has been reduced, visitors to the park should still take care to prevent human caused wildfires. The park’s regulations prohibiting ground fires, wood fires, and smoking on trails in the Chisos Mountains are still in place.

Dora is the explorer of the group and a 11 week old female tortoise kitten. Dominic is also 11 weeks old and he is a black and gray tabby male kitten with an easy going personality. Patches is 9 weeks old female, white with calico accents who is a shy but coming out of her shell. Billy Jack is a 8 week old Russian Blue male kitten who is personable and well adjusted. From Will Hurd: WASHINGTON, DC – Today, S. 2397, the Senate companion to U.S. Representative Will Hurd’s DHS Data Framework Act, was unanimously approved by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. In response to this great news, Hurd released the following statement:

“It’s 2018. Our law enforcement should be able to get the right information to the right people at the right time, to keep our nation’s enemies on the run and off our shores. DHS personnel need to share information quickly without compromising our nation’s secrets, and that’s why my colleagues on both sides of the aisle unanimously approved the DHS Data Framework Act in the House,” said Hurd, who spent almost a decade as an undercover officer in the CIA and serves on the House Homeland Security Committee. “I applaud Senator Maggie Hassan for introducing the DHS Data Framework Act in the Senate and her Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee colleagues for recognizing this initiative to keep Americans safe.”

 The DHS Data Framework Act codifies an effort at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop a data framework to incorporate all DHS component agency data related to homeland security, terrorist information, weapons of mass destruction, and national intelligence, into one system, thereby alleviating the current costly, cumbersome process of searching and vetting information against multiple databases with different log-ins, passwords, and legal restrictions.

Nori is an incredibly sweet 4 month old puppy and weighs 20 pounds. She will be the perfect medium-sized dog. From her above-average smarts to her beautiful fox-red colored coat, this is one special girl. Nori is well behaved, crated trained and working on being house trained. A special meeting of the Brewster County Commissioners Court is scheduled tomorrow, Wednesday, June 6 at 9 am in the Commissioners Courtroom, Brewster County Courthouse, 6th and Ave. E, Alpine.

Countywide Scam Alert

A scam targeting South County residents is being investigated by Brewster County Deputies. The caller claims to represent Big Bend Electric, and is requesting payment on overdue accounts. The number 888-583-4130 has been associated with this scam, but we remind everyone to be wary of anyone requesting information over the phone.

Terlingua Recycles This Thursday

Heads up! The amazing folks at Terlingua Recycles need volunteers for the next hauling day!

If you can help, it’s really beneficial for us to know who might be 

showing up (just in case we have to beg) - especially for the monthly runs into the Park. Please send Terlingua Recycles a FB message

The next trip into the park is this Thursday (June 7th). We meet at the Recycling Center (behind Terlingua EMS) at 8 a.m. to take the bins into the park, sort the items into the correct bins at the Park, and then head home. We’re usually back between noon and 1 p.m.

Balmorhea State Park Pool Update

Park staff have been advised that a preliminary time estimate for completion of repairs and re-opening of the pool is 2 to 3 months. Because there are five endangered species in San Solomon Springs, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is also in consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to gain concurrence with the Department’s plan to protect those species during the upcoming pool repairs. We will continue to post updates on the our Facebook page as we receive new information.

It's HOT out there!  May and June are typically the hottest and driest months of the year in Big Bend, with daytime temperatures often reaching 100 and heat indices near 120 degrees Fahrenheit! Protect yourself from deadly heat stroke by following some simple guidelines: hike early and be off the trail before noon, wear sun protective clothing and a hat, drink at least 1 quart/hour of water (1 gallon/day or more), eat salty snacks, and seek shade.  Drinking water alone will not keep you cool!  Here in Big Bend, even the mountain trails can  reach the high 90's in the shade in the summer.  Take care of yourself and your hiking buddies so you can hike another day.

My manners, sweetness and overall amazing attitude make me a remarkable dog! Although I have been in the shelter for quite some time, I am patiently waiting for my forever home and I am not losing hope! I love catching raindrops on my tongue, making new dog friends and I get along with every dog I meet. I am wonderful with all humans too; I don't pull on the leash and am fully house trained. MORE ON MESQUITE BEANS:
Many people have been asking about bean picking and it sounds like there will be several "pickin parties" going on when the time comes. For now it’s time to start taste testing.
The taste test is really important because you can have one tree that is sweet and one tree right beside it that is bitter and disgusting. We don't want bitter, disgusting flour, we want SWEET! So, when the beans on the tree begin to turn RED (some trees on Terlingua Creek are at this stage now) taste the bean and if it's good, mark the tree so you can come back to it later. Might be a good idea to pick up some flagging tape at Bee Mountain Hardware.
Remember that this first year we will be driving the beans to Tucson for milling into flour for a travelling hammermill so that we can mill our own beans in the future.

THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED SATURDAY FOR RANGE CLEAN UP DAY
There were 17 who raked brass & shot gun shells, built target frames and pulled a few weeds. Joel and Sylvia have put the finishing touches on Pistol Range #2 with the completion of the seats and tables. It is awesome. Thanks so much members. The range is now ready for the Women on Target Shooting Clinic on Saturday, May 26, 2018.
Since we are now "clean", please as you use the range, make an effort to pick up your brass and shotgun shells and clays. There will be barrels to put the brass in set up within the next week or so. The brass will be given to the boy scouts as a fund raiser. We will have a WOT volunteers orientation meeting at 6:00 pm Thursday 5/24/2018 on the Rifle Range. If you are wanting to help and cannot make that meeting, please just give Donnie Newberry 294-0272 or Linda Murray 915-204-1472 a call.

Last Community Taize Service of the Season
Taize, an ecumenical, inter-spiritual service of reconciliation will be held at 5:30 pm on Sunday, May 27, at St. James Episcopal Church located at 510 N. 6th St at Ave A in Alpine. A soup, salad and bread supper will follow that is free and open to all. This is the last Taize Service until September.
Taize worship consists of meditative singing and periods of silence in order to reach a contemplative state. Big Bend High School is holding their annual Fiesta Day on Friday, May 19, from 8:15-11:30 am. The activities will start at the high school flag pole. Wanted: TVA Facilitators

The Terlingua Visual Arts Committee is in need of one or more persons to take over the facilitation of visual arts events and promotion. Two or three people are recommended as the tasks, though not continual, can be several occurring simultaneously. 

No events are currently planned for the summer or fall. Now is the time to start the ball rolling with some fresh ideas and rewarding hard work. We have a good inventory of exhibit display materials and a history of successful shows, as well as an annual calendar fundraiser which the community has come to expect.

TVA is a non-profit committee of the Big Bend Citizens Alliance whose main purpose is to promote local artists and their work and to enrich the community through access to the visual arts.

Balmorhea SP Pool Closed

Due to structural failure found during the annual pool cleaning and concern for the safety of park visitors, the Balmorhea State Park pool will be closed until further notice, pending repairs. Park officials are evaluating the extent of the damage and taking steps to repair the structure. Please check our Facebook page and park website for updates.

Boquillas Crossing Hours Change

The Boquillas Port of Entry within Big Bend National Park, providing access to the town of Boquillas, Coahuila, Mexico, as well as the protected areas of Maderas del Carmen, Ocampo, and Cañon de Santa Elena, will change hours [AND DAYS!] of operation beginning May 13.

Pedestrians will be able to access the port between 9am and 6pm, Friday through Monday. This is a change from the current days of operation, which are Wednesday through Sunday. This change in days reflects visitation patterns, which are reduced during the extreme heat of the summer.

Visitors can cross by foot or by rowboat (for a fee). This crossing does not accommodate vehicle crossing or commercial importation of products. Passports, passport cards, or other official travel documentation is required.

The Boquillas Port of Entry is staffed by National Park Service rangers who can assist travelers with information about visiting the area.

Instructional Shooting Clinics

Big Bend Sportsman Club is sponsoring a Women on Target day. Women will be partnered up with an experienced shooter and taught how to safely fire their firearm. Class will be run by NRA standards.  KSAs • Ability to interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, drawings and specifications, and other technical guides of varying degrees of complexity • Knowledge of work practices, methods, processes, and skills in the crafts of electricity, carpentry, plumbing, ironwork, welding, painting, concrete work, and appliance repair • Skill in the use of test instruments, measuring devices, and hand and power tools • Knowledge of shop mathematics (arithmetic), building operational requirements and the impact of space moves and alterations when specialized needs are involved

 Minimum Qualifications Statement

 WG-10: You must have experience or training in at least two of the following building maintenance trades: Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning, Painting, Plumbing, and Carpentry. You must have the ability and knowledge to complete a variety of tasks in these trades and be capable of reading and understanding blue prints, factory manuals, and operating manuals sufficient to accomplish the described tasks. You must be familiar with all tools, equipment, and materials used by maintenance mechanics.
