Terlingua Preservation Society
It’s time again for the Terlingua Preservation Society’s annual distribution of Big Checks! One check for $4,700 goes to the Terlingua Fire & Emergency Medical Services, a second check for $4,700 goes to the Terlingua Common School District. The third check for $4,700 will go to Activets early next week.

 Becoming Mechanic Center
Like all the other fluids and oils in your car, you want to change them as part of a routine maintenance schedule. Never do you want to wait until you are encountering a problem. As a rule of thumb, every 20- 30,000 miles is when you want to change your transmission fluid. Transmission fluid is a little bit different than engine oil because it has to not only lubricate, it also has to disperse heat.  Generators Update
Brewster County Emergency Management officials confirmed they have received tentative grant approval for generators in Marathon and Terlingua.
Matt Van Ostrand with Brewster County Emergency Management says FEMA approved grants for the two generators pending studies showing the devices will not damage historic buildings or the environment.
The generators were needed last winter, especially in Terlingua, where the lone power line into the city was cut due to inclement weather, leaving some residents in the border city without power for up to a week.
The installation date for the generations has not been decided.

Terlingua CISD Board Meeting
The Board of Trustees of the Terlingua Common School District will meet this Wednesday, October 21 at 6 pm for a regular meeting. The public is welcome to attend. The meeting will be at the Big Bend High School on Roadrunner Circle in Terlingua.

AA Meeting
The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

 Terlingua Community Choir
The Terlingua Community Choir calls all past and future members to sing for the holidays! This season’s rehearsals will be Wednesdays, 5:30-7 in the TCSD band/music room, as before. Rehearsal dates are: Oct 28; Nov.4,11,18; Dec.2,9. Like last year, we will be singing melody only for our favorite carols, but you are welcome to sing “parts”!
Performance dates set are: Dec 10@Party Barn, and Dec 18@Barton Warnock Center, both with school band and contributions from the younger grades. Starlight may request our presence for a tree lighting night, as before. Call Ted, 371-2263, with questions.

All of the books (English and Spanish) can be checked out at the library as well.  There are also on-line meetings.  You can now get all kinds of help and support in the privacy of your own home at a variety of different times each and every day.

 Hi there, Handsome!
HANDSOME came to the shelter in June and is more than ready to find his family.  He has a lot of energy and doesn’t like being in a cage 24/7, but once he’s out of his kennel he is as sweet and fun as can be, and ready for an adventure. He adores playing with the other dogs - especially OCHO. They romp, chase and trade toys, then plop down in the sun together when they’re pooped.  HANDSOME has a terrific personality, and will fit in wonderfully with any loving family who lets him run, play and interact. HANDSOME is about 2 years old and just under 40 pounds. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. Lilly was rescued from a ranch outside Alpine two months ago. The shelter couldn’t accept her from outside the city limits. Facing the worst of alternatives, Lilly came into a temporary foster arrangement, and now needs to be adopted. Lilly is an exuberant one year old black dog, weighing 40 lbs. For a dog who came so close to death, Lilly loves to play, loves other dogs, loves her training, loves her toys, loves water, loves grass, loves everything about life! She is one of those dogs that will inspire you out of bed and into adventure each day. Lilly has not outgrown her puppy charms and is ready to continue her training. She already knows sit, stay, and come. She would be delighted to have another dog to romp with. Lilly is spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on all shots. Billy Bothwell lived on Terlingua Ranch, then later lived at Study Butte RV park before being helped to relocate to Alpine where he was closer to medical services. His suffering has now come to an end. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

TERLINGUA CSD This is homecoming week at Terlingua School! Come out and show your support for the Paisanos on Wednesday, October 7. Starting at 4:00, there will be a fun run at the school track for students in K-6th grade and beginning at 4:15, the 5 miler Running Parade starts at the school, travels down 118 to the BBNP Entrance Sign and then back to the school. Reward stolen last Tuesday morning a Champion 3500rated watt/4000start7ng watt yellow in color from bighatdave at a frame by a short thick woman in a grey 4 door car. I will pay 100 bucks over what you paid her for it out of her trunk, we can’t have this in our town. The 2nd Annual Tolbert-Fowler Chili Cook-off Artfest is coming up on November 7th. Sixteen artists -- most of them local -- are participating this year. Come out to the cook-off behind the Terlingua Store and find yourself in a cultural paradise. The "gallery" will be open Saturday only from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. where you can also greet the artists.

PATRICK needs a home of his own! PATRICK is 8 years old and has spent most of his life making do with less than he deserves. He has been in the shelter for 7 months, taking great joy in human attention and the comfort of fellow small dogs. Unfortunately for PATRICK, his kennel-buddies keep getting adopted and now he is alone again. PATRICK wants a calm home that will let him discover family life at his own pace. A bit of an underdog himself, he has endeared himself to all AHS volunteers for showing a truly unique sweetness to the many dogs that have shared his kennel. PATRICK is 17 pounds, housebroken, a great leash-walker, and up to date on all shots. He will embrace life with mellow dogs or cats, or a home where he can be your one and only! La Kiva has set an opening date!!!  We will open the bar for business on Monday October 12, 2015.  We hope to be able to open the kitchen soon thereafter, but no date has been set for food service.  We will be serving ice cold draft beer, ice cold bottled beer and a complete assortment of mixed beverages.  We hope to see you at La Kiva soon!  Details in next week's Moon in regards to opening weekend festivities!  (Costumes, anyone?)

Barton Warnock Visitor Center celebrated National Public Lands Day with a Hike & Sketch. Families were invited to hike with park interpreter, Amber Harrison and artist, Crystal Allbright. Following a jaunt through the desert, the group returned to the visitor center to create art.

Photographs, creative writing and drawings were entered in the "Get to KNow" Texas State Parks Youth Arts Contest. From Panther Junction, Alpine, and Terlingua, families came out to hike and make art at Big Bend Ranch State Park: Cory Cason, Hat Cason, Bernadette Devine, Caelan Devine Ryan, Evin Hanke, Cassandra Perez, Felix Perez, and Zoey Sexton. Thanks to Martha Stafford for the creative snacks including bananas that look like dolphins! "We have plans to do these hikes more often!" says Ms. Allbright, "It is a great way to learn about the desert and have a chance to express yourself through art."

From BBNP: There will a ground breaking ceremony on September 26 at the Fossil Bone Picnic Area starting at 10:00 am to dedicate the coming Fossil Discovery Exhibit! This exhibit will be completed next year and will be our largest exhibit ever built in the park and cover our world class paleo diversity. This is a partnership project with the park's friends group.

Sept. 26, 2015 is National Public Lands Day - a day set aside to celebrate our nation’s public lands. Come enjoy the trails at Big Bend Ranch State Park and let nature inspire your family to create some art. From 9am - 2pm, The Barton Warnock Visitor Center will be hosting a guided hike followed by art activities led by local artist and musician, Crystal Allbright. Art creations can be submitted to the Arts in the Parks Youth Art Contest. Park entry fees will be waived for all participants. Monthly presentations at The Big Bend Library will resume THIS upcoming Thurs.  Sept.  24th at 6:00 p.m.  Please join us at the library for a program led by Jeff Leach entitled:   Chasing Our Ancestral Microbiome. Advances in next generation DNA sequencing and computational tools has begun to shed light on the role of microbes in common disease such as obesity, irritable bowel disease, autism, kidney stones, celiac disease, a vast array of autoimmune disease – and the list goes on.  In this presentation we will discuss our attempt to recapture our ancient microbiome through our work with one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer groups in Africa.  Big Bend Library is located on the campus of Terlingua Common School District.  Programs are free, open to the public, and refreshments will be served.  If you would like to help with refreshments or make a donation, please contact Glenda Luttrell @ 371-2552.  We look forward to seeing you there for this interesting and informative program!

Brewster County, TX, September 21, 2015 – The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office and the Brewster County Office of Emergency Management recently resumed the use of the CodeRED community and emergency notification system.  This system will be used to provide information to the residents of Brewster County about road closures, emergencies, and other information.

The CodeRED community and emergency notification system is used by the City of Alpine and Brewster County to provide emergency information to the public through several different means, such as a recorded voice message, text message, and email.  When residents sign up for CodeRED they can choose several different ways to receive these notifications.  Residents are highly encouraged to sign up for this free service at www.brewstercountytx.com/code-red.  For residents that do not have internet access there will be copies of the signup form available at the Alpine Police Department, Terlingua Fire & EMS station, and the Marathon Public Library.

Additionally, a CodeRED Mobile Alert app is available for Apple and Android smart phones.  This app is free and utilizes a smart phone’s GPS receiver to alert the phone’s owner when there is a CodeRED alert issued nearby.

Big Bend National Park invites all 4th grade students to visit the park for free as part of the White House’s new Every Kid in a Park program.  Starting September 1, 4th grade students can now go to www.everykidinapark.gov to complete an activity and obtain a free annual entry pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks. "We’re offering a special invitation to fourth graders and their families to discover not only Big Bend National Park, but all our national parks.  During the National Park Service’s 2016 Centennial celebration, we want everyone to get out and explore these national treasures,” said Superintendent Cindy Ott-Jones.  “We hope these free passes will introduce 4th graders, their classes, and families to places where they can explore, play, and learn.” To receive their free pass for national parks, fourth graders can visit the Every Kid in a Park website and play a game to access their special Every Kid in a Park pass.  Fourth graders and their families can then use this pass for free entry to national parks and other federal public lands and waters across the country from September 1, 2015, through August 31, 2016. Mark your calendars for National Public Lands Day Saturday, September 26th, 2015, at Big Bend National Park.  National Public Lands Day is a chance to join with others to support public lands, and to volunteer on a park improvement project.  All volunteers receive free entrance to the national park, camaraderie, and a fun-filled day! Big Bend National Park staff will host a volunteer project on September 26th cutting brush in the Chisos Basin.  This is part of an ongoing fuel reduction project that helps protect park facilities in the event of a wildfire.  The brush that is cut during National Public Lands Day will be transported to a site in the northern part of the park, where it will be used to help control erosion and re-establish grasses in historically heavily impacted areas.  The project is free and open to the public.  Volunteers and park staff will meet in the Chisos Basin parking lot (CCC Pavilion) at 8:30 am.  The park will provide volunteers with tools, work shirts, gloves and water.  Please call Daphne Sewing at 432-477-1110 (Daphne_Sewing@nps.gov) for more information. Terlingua Community Garden
Thanks to all who showed up to the meeting!  We are still looking for an assistant garden manager to assist Cassandra, treasurer/secretary to maintain financial records, Farmer's Market coordinator, and Green Scene coordinator.  The deadline to reserve a plot or two, and to sign the Gardener's Agreement is September 30th.  Our next Work Day is September 21st.  Our regular volunteer days will be Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the morning. If your schedule doesn't allow, email us at terlinguagreenscene@gmail.come and we will arrange something!  Thank you for your support!! Let's Grow Together!

Monthly presentations at The Big Bend Library will resume on Thursday September 24th at 6:00 p.m.  Please join us at the library for a program led by Jeff Leach entitled: Chasing Our Ancestral Microbiome.
Advances in next generation DNA sequencing and computational tools has begun to shed light on the role of microbes in common disease such as obesity, irritable bowel disease, autism, kidney stones, celiac disease, a vast array of autoimmune disease – and the list goes on.
In this presentation we will discuss our attempt to recapture our ancient microbiome through our work with one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer groups in Africa.
Big Bend Library is located on the campus of Terlingua Common School District.
Programs are free, open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

Big Bend Conservancy and Big Bend National Park announce the groundbreaking for the Fossil Discovery Exhibit.  The groundbreaking will be at the Fossil Discovery Exhibit site on September 26, 2015 at 10AM and is open to the public.  The groundbreaking ceremony location is eight miles north of Panther Junction on the road to Persimmon Gap.

There is a meeting scheduled for Monday September 21st at the Big Bend Church for anyone interested in learning about welding technology. The meetings will be at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. This class is designed to prepare high school age students for entry level skills in the welding industry but adults are welcome also. ROSS Needs a Home!!  ROSS was pulled from a shelter to avoid being euthanized and is in foster care in Ft. Davis. For many, many months he has been dreaming of the day that he can go home to his permanent family. One benefit of adopting from a foster arrangement is the opportunity for lots of info... ROSS is very good-natured, happy for outdoor activity and then to be a couch potato, loves people and gets along well with some dogs. He has shared a home with lots of other fosters dogs who have found their families, but will also be a great only dog. ROSS is great walking on a leash, riding in the car, splashing in his doggy pool, chasing after tennis balls (returning said balls, not so much), taking hikes and rolling on his back for belly rubs. He has an eager, impish personality that inspires big smiles. ROSS can travel to meet interested/approved adopters. Big Bend National Park Welcomes 4th Grade Students Through “Every Kid In a Park” Initiative
New National Program Encourages Families and Classes to Visit National Parks
Big Bend National Park invites all 4th grade students to visit the park for free as part of the White House’s new Every Kid in a Park program.  Starting September 1, 4th grade students can now go to www.everykidinapark.gov to complete an activity and obtain a free annual entry pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks.

One Day at a Time in Terlingua
AA is not affiliated with any religious organization but is grateful to the Big Bend  Church (north of the post office) for allowing us to meet there. Thursdays, at 7:30 p.m. (Closed Discussion). Anyone who has a desire to stop drinking or remain sober is welcome. Literature is available in our local library. Carpooling may be available to Alpine AA (Wednesdays) and Al-Anon (Thursdays) meetings. Contact phone numbers are posted on the church doors.
