KEEP BIG BEND WILD!

Keep Big Bend Wild is with this community on the border wall fight, and totally unconvinced that the map update quietly posted last week by CBP indicating that there is no longer a physical wall planned for Big Bend National Park and Rio Grande Wild & Scenic River is a permanent change that will allow us to rest easy.

If this is a true reflection of their intent, Keep Big Bend Wild, and the many allied groups and citizens locally and elsewhere that have been actively opposing this, would be delighted. The map still shows a wall in much of Big Bend Ranch State Park, which is just as destructive a proposal as in the National Park. We remain concerned and vigilant and would like to see a clear public announcement from CBP of their intent and a commitment that it won’t change again, before we will assume this is over.

We support a secure border, but a wall through the Big Bend would be unnecessary and highly destructive, as the number of people who cross have long been extremely low. The remarkable public outcry over the proposed wall here, though, has been a testament to the passion Texans have for Big Bend, and the need for all of to work together to assure its permanent protection.

Our talking points and “what you can do” handout is now posted on the KBBW website here. Download it, share it, post it, whatever is useful!

We’re also going to be doing a peaceful “First Amendment” tabling event in front of the Panther Junction Visitor Center (yes, we have a permit) on March 20-21. While we’re hoping to see as many spring break park visitors as we can from outside the area, come see us, and sign up then (or sooner!) to support Keep Big Bend Wild.  It’s not a protest, as the NPS is not the problem here.  They just can’t say anything because they’ve been muzzled.

If a wall is built in the park, it would be the greatest assault on the integrity of any national park since a dam was built in Yosemite more than a century ago. As I wrote in the op-ed for the Chronicle, stopping the wall cannot be the end of our work. We need to ensure the still-undeveloped portions of this extraordinary landscape are protected for future generations.

Please learn more at keepbigbendwild.org, and consider supporting Keep Big Bend Wild.  There's no more important time.  Donations are welcome (we're financially sponsored by the El Paso Community Foundation, a 501c3), but we need you to allow us to list you as a supporter even more.  Local business supporters are especially appreciated.  See who's already supporting KBBW at https://keepbigbendwild.org/our-supporters/, although we’re having trouble keeping up the fast-growing list up-to-date.  If you want to help further, reach out at info@keepbigbendwild.org.

SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET IN THE GARDEN

Come see us at the Saturday Community Market, open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items. You'll also be able to enjoy our fabulous local mobile library and portable free ‘porch’, even consult with Dr. Gigabyte if you have a computer problem.

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, sour dough bread, all natural lip balms and skin care products, all natural essential oil fragrances, beard oil and massage oils, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here.

Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.

We welcome new vendors. To make it easy for new vendors to try our market and to show our appreciation to our regular vendors, we waive set-up fees on the first Saturday of the month, offering free set-up on that day.

For more information, text or call 432.213.1863 or pop in at the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.
