TERLINGUA MOON Vol. 34 No. 36 September 5, 2023

TERLINGUA MOON

Vol. 34. No. 36      SEPTEMBER 5, 2023

"Have as much fun as you can; it's the most important thing." --

Catfish (Gary) Callaway  5/26/47-8/24/23

CELEBRATING CATFISH

There will be a life celebration for Catfish Callaway on November 11th (starting early evening) at the Boathouse.

From his daughter Taylor:

I know this is the weekend after the Chili Cook-Off and it is also the day of the Joey May Barnes Memorial Fundraiser. I’m hoping that means more people are able to attend because they’ll already be in town.

It’s difficult to find a time that works for the tourist influx and also the locals, but after discussing with quite a few people in Terlingua, this seems like the best bet. Greg Hammer has graciously confirmed The Boathouse for the fiesta.

An event page will be posted in the MOON soon. In the meantime, please mark your calendar. A full obituary is forthcoming.

HELP OUT A FRIEND

Our friend Jerry R Stephenson is in need of funds to continue his stay in the hospital and therapy both in and out of the hospital. He is still unable to walk due to the accident in May. His daughter currently has COVID and is unable to take him home with her.

If you can donate even a little, please do. His PayPal is jerstep123gm@gmail.com. We are working on getting his CashApp information and other ways to donate. Even if you can't donate, please reach out to him on Facebook or via text at 432-244-9061 to give him some cheery words.

Jerry is also currently trying to sell his motorhome.

SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET

Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00.  Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're there every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.

We welcome new vendors. Come set up in the shade to sell your wares. Flea market items are welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com or pop in to the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Fresh eggs, local art, handcrafted textiles, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms, hand balms, essential oil perfumes and sugar scrubs, leather goods, handcrafted, creative jewelry, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, and more -- you never know just what you'll find here. You might even find a local painter displaying her lovely, colorful works and a locally famous jerky maker on hand selling his tasty wares.

RESIDENTS OF SOUTH COUNTY           Debra here from the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend. We are a non-profit organization with the objective of providing advocacy to victims and survivors of: domestic abuse, sexual assault, and crimes.  We have many services available to our clients including (but not limited to,) advocacy, counseling, group support, advocacy to other agencies, emergency funding, safe houses, and a small food pantry.

Our main office is in Alpine TX, with another office in Presidio. Deja Vu (in Alpine) is our thrift store, whose proceeds go to help fund the organization. Since South Brewster County is geographically isolated, our Terlingua Office is considered a satellite outreach office.  We also try to keep lots of aid and financial forms on hand.  We do our best to provide help with government agencies.

In South County we partner with West Texas Food Bank to keep our Food Pantry stocked and to provide a once a month food disbursement.  We order this food from the food bank and they deliver all the way down here to South County.  This is not a free government service. The Crisis Center pays for the food through generous individuals, fundraisers and charitable donations. At this time we are adding about 10 households per month.  We also rely on community volunteers to help make this monthly disbursement happen and to keep the center organized, maintained and clean. Thank you for helping make this happen monthly.

Onto the matter of “The Free Porch” area that has been utilized here at the Terlingua Office.  It will be closing.  Our porch has become the local drop off center of many good items, but also for a lot of trash. Our volunteers can be better utilized in upkeep of the center versus cleaning up and throwing away trash left on the porch. Since we have a thrift store in Alpine, we ask that if you want to make a donation please take it there. That is the only way those items actually benefit the Crisis Center.
