Vol.33   No. 14

Did you know?

From OutwardBound.Org:

Outward Bound in Minnesota, which predominately runs courses in Minnesota and the Boundary Waters, re-opened the Texas base a little over three years ago. This course area provides a unique opportunity for backpacking and rafting courses, while also serving as a training area for Instructors. The Minnesota base runs courses in canoeing, backpacking, sea kayaking and dog sledding, all along the border of Canada. The opportunity to experience both and jump to the southern border of the country in Texas is unique—an experience that’s offered by the Boundary Waters Dog Sledding & Texas Big Bend Leadership Semester.

From Mimi Smith, publisher of the Big Bend Gazette:

The Big Bend Gazette is searching for its next publisher.

Back in the summer of 2021 when I asked John Waters about the availability of the newspaper, the process was as much an audition as a transaction. He and Marlys entrusted the paper to me, not to keep it the same - and I intentionally went in some more directions - but to find a good fit for all.

I will write more later, but I want y'all to know - especially Terlingua and South County - and I've taken a long time to announce this. I wanted to be sure.  The Big Bend Gazette is now some 25 years in print. Twenty or so under John Waters and Marlys Hersey, 2 with me, and born of the irrepressible genius of consummate journalist Barbara Bright Novovitch who started the Marathon Gazette at the turn of the century, as a late chapter in her lifetime of top tier journalism.

The Big Bend Gazette has a vital role in local journalism of the Big Bend.

Learning about the people of the Big Bend, their projects past and future, through the job of publishing this paper (also editing, reporting, and delivering the paper) provides so many views into the place itself,it's hard to describe - I need the language of geologists and archaeologists.

The archives of the paper provide rich material that should be republished.  I tended to go on such deep dives on articles that I did not republish as much as I had planned to, of gorgeous writing, great science writing, and enduring stories.   Outside of the Gazette's own material, I was always wildly surprised when generous permissions to republish were quickly forthcoming, from huge magazines (Audubon), and world class photographers like Ash Ponders, Katy Garren Hoskins, and Carolyn Norad Miller.

Feel free to text me at (432) 386-5508 or email msmith.justicetexas@gmail.com for more information.  If you want to call, please email or text me in advance, so I will recognize your phone number.
