BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK BEGINS TO RE-OPEN – Beginning June, 1st at 9:00 am, Big Bend National Park will resume Day Use Only recreational access for:
·        Scenic driving and bicycling along all paved park roads.
·        Selected frontcountry trails for day hiking.
·        Rio Grande for day-use river trips from paved road access points. Group size limits apply.
·        Panther Junction Gas Station and camp store.
·        Chisos Mountains Lodge restaurant for take-out meals only.
·        Fossil Discovery Exhibit
·        Restroom facilities.
While these areas are accessible for visitors to enjoy, a return to full operations will continue to be phased and services will be limited.
With public health in mind, the following areas and facilities will remain closed at this time:
·        All Visitor Centers.
·        Chisos Mountains Lodge overnight accommodations.
·        All campgrounds and backcountry campsites.
·        All gravel roads and backcountry roads.
·        The Hot Springs Historic Area and associated trails.
·        Boquillas Port of Entry.
Visitors to Big Bend must be prepared for the extreme summer heat of the Chihuahuan Desert. During the summer months, temperatures in the park's lower elevations and river areas typically exceed 100 degrees by late morning, and remain at dangerous levels after sunset. Hikers should stay off trails in the afternoon and carry plenty of extra water.
When recreating, the public should follow local health orders, practice Leave No Trace principles, avoid crowding and avoid high-risk outdoor activities.

THE BIG BEND COVID-19 PANDEMIC RELIEF FUND was established in March 2020 to help Brewster County residents deal with hardships caused by the pandemic. Volunteers from Alpine and Terlingua started the fund through Big Bend Citizens Alliance—a Terlingua-based non-profit organization.
To date, the Fund has awarded a total of $54,672 to 103 individuals and 3 non-profits in need. These funds have gone to help with housing and transportation costs, medical expenses, utilities, food, childcare needs and animal feed.
Our sincerest gratitude goes out to the volunteers, organizations and private individuals who so generously donated their time and money and who continue to give. This has been an outstanding show of community support and we couldn’t do it without you - THANK YOU.
To give our hard-working volunteers a break, the Fund will not be accepting applications for the month of June but will continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on the community. We are working to establish a sustainable system to provide continued financial support to those in need, with a focus on assistance not met by other agencies.
The Fund will update everyone as July nears. Questions can be directed to alpine.relief.fund@gmail.com
To donate online, visit bigbendaid.org. Checks made payable to Big Bend Citizens Alliance with “pandemic relief fund” in the memo field can be mailed to PO Box 202, Terlingua, TX 79852.
Thank you for your continued support!
