The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. Mark Twain
Blair
Pittman, who recently suffered a stroke, “is doing pretty darn
well,” according to his wife, Jean Hardy-Pittman.
The
former long-time resident of Terlingua, who now lives in Alpine, and
author of the popular “Tales From the Terlingua Porch” books will
be in intensive rehab therapies in El Paso for some time, she said.
But
“he is very lucky,” Jean added.
“His
stroke was a hemorrhage, not a clot (embolism), and though it was a
large bleed area,” she said last week, “it did not get into the
ventricles which would have potentially caused much more damage.”
And
she was optimistic: “He might come out of this stronger than
before.”

The Truth behind the Reality Show
The producers of the reality show currently in production here have sent out several versions of the synopsis of their intended "documentary". You may go to terlinguamusic.com to check out the one they sent to a local resident, as well as the response to their request. Below you will find a slightly different version sent to John Waters of the Big Bend Gazette...
THE BADLANDS
Hundreds of miles from the nearest city sits a small town in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert populated by people who have given up modern comforts and financial stability for something that money cannot buy - freedom. Terlingua is effectively closed off to outsiders; strangers are eyed with suspicion. THE BADLANDS is an 8-part documentary series that brings this world to our viewers through an intimate look at the people who live here and the businesses that make the town function, all set against the backdrop of a murder trial that has torn the community apart.
Closed off to outsiders? Strangers are eyed with suspicion? Does that sound like Terlingua's tourist economy?
One would hope that those who have signed on to be a part of this production were unaware that the true intent of these producers and this reality show is to exploit a local tragedy and effectively damage the very nature of our livelihood.
Jeffro Greasewood presented a check for $1,200 to the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend last week. This money was collected as musician's tips at each open mic and was donated in support of Terlingua food distribution.
We'd like to give a big thanks to all the musicians who gave their time and talent on Wednesday's Open Mic in support of this ongoing effort. Next project: Voices from Both Sides.
Vinnie’s Big Bend Doughnuts- across from the Cottonwood General Store, Open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, 18th, and Sunday the 19th of April. Closed on April 25th and April 26th. Go to our Facebook page for more info “Big Bend Doughnuts.” Let us know if you would like doughnuts and snow cones this summer! Thank you for your support!

The Hal Flanders Recycling Center is temporarily not accepting glass. For the first time in many months, the glass crusher is down. We are waiting on parts to fix the machine and hope to get them in as soon as possible. The parts must be custom built and it could take a month or longer to be up and running again. We do not have the room to store glass, so please do NOT bring your bottles and jars until further notice. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience.
Investigating Creativity will meet Wednesday 10 am at Becoming Fine Art. We will be discussing new projects and new ideas for projects. Coffee, espresso and if I am energetic enough maybe some homemade goodies. Hope to see you there.
And remember, folks, all of the tips collected at Open Mic at the Boathouse, starting last Wednesday and through the date of the event, will be donated to Voices. Thanks to you and Collie, Jeff, for the great work you are doing to help show the world our love for and closeness to our neighbors, friends and family in Mexico. Terlingua rocks!

Jeff Haislip writes: "What a great time, what a great community! Playing with Charlotte Teer, Chris Baker & Patrick Smith was a magical moment for me. Thank you to all the musicians for their efforts & to everyone who participated. What huge hearts you all have. It struck me as funny that at a time when there was so much talk of a reality TV show being in town or run out of town (depending on how one sees it) that the REALITY is that in our community we are building a bridge with our neighbors in Mexico. Viva Terlingua!! I love you all!" More from Pat O'Bryan at http://terlinguamusic.com/voices-from-both-sides-benefit-2015/

Big Bend Library Program
Don’t miss this program on Thursday, April 23 at 6 pm in the Big Bend Library. Paul and Voni Glaves have been avid motorcycle travelers since the 1970s. They have ridden BMW motorcycles in all 50 states, all of the Canadian provinces and territories reachable by road, and in several foreign countries. Fresh from retirement - she as a teacher, he as a Community Development Director - they were considering rejoining the workforce to become motorcycle tour guides. As a result they accompanied Ayres Adventures on three different motorcycle tours, for almost two months, in southern Africa. They rode in South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Always avid photographers, they took a few thousand photos while in Africa. They have distilled them down to one hundred or so to help them illustrate and explain the adventure. This is our first travel program in our series and you won't want to miss it !!
Anyone interested in assisting with refreshments, please contact Glenda @ 371-2552. Thanks so much!
