Terlingua Moon
By TwEyelight raven

“The range of the human mind, the scale and depth of the metaphors the mind is capable of manufacturing as it grapples with the universe, stand in stunning contrast to the belief that there is only one reality, which is man's, or worse, that only one culture among the many on earth possesses the truth. To allow mystery, which is to say to yourself, "There could be more, there could be things we don't understand," is not to damn knowledge. It is to take a wider view. It is to permit yourself an extraordinary freedom:
someone else does not have to be wrong in order that you may be right.” Barry Lopez

Russ Strutt, much loved and long time snowbird and musician in Terlingua, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015, at home in Bowen Island, Vancouver, BC. He suffered a sudden heart attack resulting from a life long heart valve defect. As he wished, he was cremated in Vancouver. His family will have a memorial and celebration of his life in his hometown of Portage la Prairie, MB, sometime in May, perhaps on his birthday the 14th. He is survived by one daughter and two grandsons, a son, four sisters and three brothers, all residing in Canada. Russ was well known by many Terlingua musicians and at one time had a band called the Big Benders. It seems that a one time or another he played with almost all of the 'classic Terlinguan' musicians and was well known for songs "Big Bender", "Red Neck Trailer Trash", "Guacamole", "Terlingua Boogey" and others recorded on his CD "Big Bender".

Menagerie Press – Reception for Chris Fritton
Thanks to everyone who came to Menagerie Press for the open house and visit with itinerate printer Chris Fritton. He was very impressed with the friendly people they met and found the quiet and beauty of the area an experience they didn't expect. Those of you who were unable to attend are more than welcome to come up and visit any time you see the grey International out front.

Big Bend Library has partnered with Driving-Tests.org, a company dedicated to driver safety and education, to offer free DMV practice tests to library patrons. The new service includes free tests, written specifically based on the state DMV materials, and is the only site of its kind to include accessibility tools that allow users to hear selections read aloud, make them into MP3s, translate pages into other languages, magnify text, and mask sections of the screen for greater visibility on driving practice tests. The program includes study material for those seeking a license for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and the CDL.  Please visit our new partnered site at http://bblibrary.driving-tests.org or visit Big Bend Library on the Terlingua School campus.
Big Bend Library Program:  Don’t miss our presentation on (THIS) Thursday, April 23 at 6 pm in the Big Bend Library. Paul and Voni Glaves have been avid motorcycle travelers since the 1970s. They have ridden BMW motorcycles in all 50 states, all of the Canadian provinces and territories reachable by road, and in several foreign countries. Fresh from retirement - she as a teacher, he as a Community Development Director - they were considering rejoining the workforce to become motorcycle tour guides. As a result they accompanied Ayres Adventures on three different motorcycle tours, for almost two months, in southern Africa. They rode in South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Always avid photographers, they took a few thousand photos while in Africa. They have distilled them down to one hundred or so to help them illustrate and explain the adventure.  Anyone interested in assisting with refreshments, please contact Glenda @ 371-2552. Thanks so much!

TERLINGUA'S FIREMAN'S BALL:  This year's Terlingua Fireman's Ball was an all around HUGE success.  The community embraced the cause and helped raise a record amount of money for the non-profit TF&EMS.
It couldn't have happened without the wonderful sponsors who contributed so generously.  A BIG THANK YOU goes out to West Texas Gas, Big Bend Telephone, Lajitas Golf Resort, Big Bend Resort & Adventures, The Cottonwood General Store, Morrison's True Value Hardware, Bill & Lisa Ivey and family, and the Starlight Theater.
There were also silent Auction donations, too numerous to list, but a Thank You goes out to those who gave.  And Don McDowell and the Boathouse staff were outstanding!
Of course the lovely dance held out under the desert sky could not have been more perfect.  Craig Carter and the Spur of the Moment Band had everyone on their feet, shuffling and smiling the whole night long!  Again, we can't say "thank you" enough to those who made this event come together so well!!!
Terlingua Paisana Golfer Savannah Mendoza to Tee It Up in Austin:  Savannah Mendoza, a senior at Big Bend High School, will be representing the Terlingua Paisanos at the 1A State Golf Tournament in Austin April 29th and 30th.  Savannah finished second overall medalist at the Regional tournament held in San Angelo April 13th and 14th  Her qualification represents a historic milestone for Terlingua CSD as she is the first athlete from any sport to qualify for State UIL competition since Big Bend High School opened in 1996.  The Paisanas narrowly missed qualifying for the state tournament as a team finishing fourth out fifteen schools.  The top three medalists and top three teams qualify for the State UIL Tournament.  The team consists of Savannah Mendoza, Luisana Rodriguez, Arely Leyva, Perla Garcia, Kassandra Galindo, and Yadelin Hernandez.
Message from The Starlight Theatre: There will be another TV crew in town this week. Unlike the "reality crew", this production does have permission to shoot in the ghost town. This Dutch production will be following Jim & Anna and will be in the Starlight briefly on Saturday night and then will also be picking up some shots on Monday morning around the area.

Terlingua Cares, a local 501(c)3, received a letter of thanks from the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend, Inc.  The musicians who participate in The Boathouse Restaurant & Bar’s Open Mic Wednesdays donated their tips for the past few months to the Crisis Center, earmarked for the Terlingua Food Bank.  The monies were given to Pat O’Bryan, founder of Terlingua Cares, who in turn presented the Crisis Center with a check in the amount of $1,200.  Webbie Carvajal, Business Administrator for the Center said, “ . . . these funds will be used for the food program at the FCCBB Terlingua outreach office for food for the people we serve.  As always, every donation really counts.  We hope you know how much we appreciate your support.”

One Day at a Time in Terlingua. AA is not affiliated with any religious organization but is grateful to the Big Bend Church for allowing us to meet there. Thursdays, at 7:30 p.m. (Closed Discussion). The South County Music Corral invites you to join us as we launch a new venue for musicians, near and far. We are located at 1001 Terlingua Ranch Road (1 mi. marker).  This is a spacious, acoustically-awesome, Quonset hut, (formerly Susi’s Snak Shack.) This venue will give musicians who live further north a place to entertain us in their neighborhood. Future plans include inviting bands and musicians from elsewhere to perform as well.  SATURDAY, MAY 2 –6 P.M. Join us for brisket, chicken and sausage on the grill, chopped Barbeque on a bun and various sides for $10/plate. SUNDAY MORNIG, MAY 3 –8 A.M. Granados’ Menudo will be served with a complimentary Bloody Mary.  100 % of the proceeds from this benefit will go toward the hook-up, connection fees and deposits required by Rio Grande Electric.  Any amounts exceeding the hook-up will be deposited to RGE as a credit account toward, hopefully, the first couple of months’ electric bills.  BYOB, BYO-CHAIR, BYO-BEDROLL (just in case) and you might bring a lantern or two.

Becoming Fine Art:  Gallery will be open daily at 10 am.  We are looking at having a beginning clay work shop very soon. Should be fun!  Lots of things happening at the studio: painting, drawing, jewelry, furniture refinishing, clay, sculpture, sewing, and much much more. For more info call: 371-2694. We are going to have a porch sale this weekend to make room for coming renovations: lots of odds and ends and craft supplies.
