Get ready for Lasting Expressions: Seven Artists, Seven Expressions. The
art show features seven Terlingua artists and will be held during the
4th Annual High Sierra Chili Cook-off this Saturday, Jan. 31st, from 10
a.m. - 5 p.m. at the "shop." Bring your friends and visit with your
artist friends.
The Electronic recycling event in Alpine is Wed through Friday March
11th through the 13 from 9-6 at the Old Fire Station on the corner of
North 8th St. and West Ave. E. Also on Sat. March 14 from 9-3.

Singer/Songwriter Autoharpist comes to Terlingua!
Award winning Singer/Songwriter Autoharpist, Eileen Kozloff, will be
performing in Terlingua and Lajitas with local artist Hank Woji. Steeped
in the old time folk tradition of The Carter Family and The Weavers,
Eileen is a Pennsylvania native who now resides in Sarasota, FL., and
tours internationally. The duo of Woji & Kozloff has been performing
extensively throughout Florida and the Northeast for the last 2 years
and are now bringing their act to the Big Bend for the first time! The
Mini-Tour starts at The Thirsty Goat, in Lajitas, on Friday &
Saturday Jan 30th & 31st followed by performances at The Starlight
Theatre on Monday Feb 2nd, The Boathouse on Friday Feb 6th and The High

In case you have not heard. A suit has been filed against me, Ken
Barnes, in Dallas County, Texas, by Lajitas Resorts, (Lajitas Capital
Partners,LLC). The suit claims I did not have a right to donate fossils
that came off Lajitas property to The Shuler Museum of Paleontology at
Southern Methodist University in Dallas,Texas. I was given possession of
those fossils for scientific paleontolcgic purposes by both previous
owners of Lajitas, Walter Mischer in the early 1990s and Steve Smith in
2000. All of the fossils in question were in my possession before Steve
Smith filed bankrupt at his Lajitas Resort, in fact most of them were in
my possession before Mr. Mischer sold to Mr. Smith. I had two small
Labs and Museums off of Lajitas property starting in 1986 in Study Butte
and later on my own property in Terlingua. Mr. Smith built me a museum
building on Lajitas property, (that I designed), in 2002 that I called
Mosasaur Ranch Museum. I named it after property I owned and called
Mosasaur Ranch in Terlingua where I had found several Mosasaurs. I used
all of these facilities for educational purposes for school groups,
Elderhostel groups and the general public. The labs were used for the
tedious work of preparing and study of the fossils. I had a huge
collection of Dinosaur fossils that were donated to the University of
Texas Vertebrate Paleontology Lab in Austin by myself and the Gaddis
family several years back. The agreement with UT Austin was that I
stayed in possession of those fossils as long as I had a museum. The
____ head manager at Lajitas Resort ran me out of my museum because I
would not give them the mosasaur, not a dinosaur, fossils they had no
claim to so all of the dinosaur fossils had to go to UT Austin. The
Mosasaur fossils had already been donated and delivered to The Shuler
Museum at SMU in Dallas.------- LONG STORY SHORT IS WE HAVE A GREAT

She has a vast number of landscape oil paintings of the Big Bend and river area. Michele is now showing her work at the Gallery and is the guest artist for January.
Our hours of operation for January and February are Thursday - Monday, 9am-6pm. Come by for a meet the artist reception on Saturday, January 25th. Coffee and wine, as well as refreshments will be available 3-6 p.m.

The 14th Annual Terlingua Home Tour is scheduled for this Sunday, Jan. 25. This year we will be visiting the homes of Resa and Tim Callahan, Sandy Smith, Mimi Webb-Miller and Ed Sullivan. There will be two tours - the first at 12:00 and the 2nd at 3:00. Each tour is followed by a reception at Espresso y Poco Mas. Tickets are $30. Reservations may be made by calling Big Bend Library at 371-2639 or in the evening 371-2399. All proceeds go to Last Minute Low Budget Productions.
La Posada Milagro is now serving GLUTEN FREE alternatives on most of our menu selections, we have corn tortillas and fresh homemade bread for anyone who is hungry for a good old fashioned homemade meal but can't eat wheat. To all who participated in Health Needs Survey: As announced in the Terlingua Moon, the South Brewster Co. Health Needs Survey was conducted from Nov. until Jan. 15th. The survey certainly served its purpose. Great input from the community about what it wants for health care! If you did not get the chance to participate in this first of many steps in getting more health care down south, be assured you can voice more on the subject as we will be having several town meetings to discuss these results for taking the next steps to take care of our people! According to the AP, skunks are now the main target in a vaccine bait air-drop program credited with eliminating rabies strains that infect coyotes and gray foxes in Texas, Brewster County is included in a drop scheduled for later this month. This involves dropping doses, in fishmeal-coated packets, for wildlife to eat. Allegedly, the packets won't harm pets and proved safe in tests involving more than 60 species of animals. People should avoid the bait because wild animals are less likely to eat packets that carry a human scent. The vaccinations will be dropped in South Texas later this month with flights out of Del Rio, Alpine and Zapata. Parts of 18 counties will be covered including Brewster and Presidio. BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK REINSTATES TEMPORARY CLOSURES FOR PEREGRINE FALCONS
February 1 - May 31, the following areas will be closed to public entry:
The SE Rim Trail and a portion of the NE Rim Trail from Boot Canyon/SE Rim junction to just north of Campsite NE-4.
All SE Rim campsites as well as NE campsites 4 and 5 are closed during this period.
Technical rock climbing on rock faces within ¼ mile of known peregrine eyries, as posted, will not be allowed February 1 - July 15. The park does not plan to close any other areas, but restrictions may be modified if Peregrine behavior or nesting sites do not follow traditional trends.
The trial for the man accused of killing Glenn Felts, owner of La Kiva in Terlingua bar been set. Tony Flint will stand before a judge in Sierra Blanca on April 27 for the murder, according to District Attorney Rod Ponton.

The 14th Annual Terlingua Home Tour is scheduled for this Sunday, Jan. 25. This year we will be visiting the homes of Resa and Tim Callahan, Sandy Smith, Mimi Webb-Miller and Ed Sullivan. There will be two tours - the first at 12:00 and the 2nd at 3:00. Each tour is followed by a reception at Espresso y Poco Mas. Tickets are $30. To all who participated in Health Needs Survey: As announced in the Terlingua Moon, the South Brewster Co. Health Needs Survey was conducted from Nov. until Jan. 15th. The survey certainly served its purpose. Great input from the community about what it wants for health care! If you did not get the chance to participate in this first of many steps in getting more health care down south, be assured you can voice more on the subject as we will be having several town meetings to discuss these results for taking the next steps to take care of our people! According to the AP, skunks are now the main target in a vaccine bait air-drop program credited with eliminating rabies strains that infect coyotes and gray foxes in Texas, Brewster County is included in a drop scheduled for later this month. This involves dropping doses, in fishmeal-coated packets, for wildlife to eat. Allegedly, the packets won't harm pets and proved safe in tests involving more than 60 species of animals. People should avoid the bait because wild animals are less likely to eat packets that carry a human scent. The vaccinations will be dropped in South Texas later this month with flights out of Del Rio, Alpine and Zapata. Parts of 18 counties will be covered including Brewster and Presidio. BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK REINSTATES TEMPORARY CLOSURES FOR PEREGRINE FALCONS
February 1 - May 31, the following areas will be closed to public entry:
The SE Rim Trail and a portion of the NE Rim Trail from Boot Canyon/SE Rim junction to just north of Campsite NE-4.
All SE Rim campsites as well as NE campsites 4 and 5 are closed during this period.
Technical rock climbing on rock faces within ¼ mile of known peregrine eyries, as posted, will not be allowed February 1 - July 15. The park does not plan to close any other areas, but restrictions may be modified if Peregrine behavior or nesting sites do not follow traditional trends.
The trial for the man accused of killing Glenn Felts, owner of La Kiva in Terlingua bar been set. Tony Flint will stand before a judge in Sierra Blanca on April 27 for the murder, according to District Attorney Rod Ponton.

TCSD's bills are paid at regular, monthly meetings, and January 21st would have made some bill payments near past due on that date. This Wednesday's meeting - Jan. 14th - will be held at 5:30 p.m., at the Big Bend High School. This is the first meeting of the year, and with a fresh new Board of Trustees. Vote next Tuesday!
The special tax roll back election is Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 7 am-7 pm at
the Red Patillo Community Center in Study Butte/Terlingua. If you can’t
make it next Tuesday, early voting is going on now at the Brewster
County Courthouse in Alpine and will continue through Friday, Jan. 9,
during office hours. (This is the only location for early voting.) Those
who signed the petition last fall got this ball rolling. Now it’s time
to do something about it and make your voice heard. VOTE!
Let’s hope power is restored by the time you read this:
(Jan. 4) This is Dan Laws to all our members in Brewster County. We have
received calls from members stating that someone has told them that
power will be restored this afternoon. Unfortunately, that is not true. I
hate that people will start rumors like that. We are still estimating
that it will be Tuesday, January 6, before power will be restored.
I was on location today and can report there are five crews working to
restore power. In the morning there will be 7 crews working. The
pictures below were taken today so you can see what the conditions are
on location. As I am sure some are aware AEP has several lines down,
including the line from our Switching station to Alpine. Oncor, in the
Midland Odessa area has lines down and Texas New Mexico serving in and
around Fort Stockton has lines down. In my travels today I have seen
contractor crews working for AEP and Texas New Mexico making line
repairs to their facilities.
I mention that simply to make the point that RGEC and its members are not the only ones that have been affected by this winter storm. RGEC is not the only electric utility
that has lost lines during this storm and RGEC is not the only electric
utility still making repairs. We have had a number of members affected
by this line make all kinds of crazy accusations when they call in to
ask for a status update. They say things like they have been by RGEC’s
transmission line and no one is working on the line. folks that say that
either don’t see well, don’t really know where the transmission line
is, or are simply being less than truthful. The pictures below were all
taken today.
Muddy conditions pose the greatest problem for us
right now. We have two dozers on location to pull trucks up and down the
line and clear right of way, but it makes for slow going. While on
location, the contractor working for AEP asked the rancher where we are
replacing poles if he would use his maintainer to pull them through the
mud. Please know that we are all having problems.
I don’t want
anyone to be misled. We will restore power as quickly as possible, but I
would be careless to tell it will happen sooner than Tuesday afternoon.
The good news is we may catch a break and it will happen sooner, but
the reverse is true also, a worsening of the conditions could delay
resolving this problem.
Weather or not, we had a party New Year’s Day!
The 25th Annual Blackeyed Pea Off went off despite the odds, complete with a
little sunshine and a beautiful rainbow there at the end. This year’s
winners were: 1st) Paula Osborne from Gulala, CA, and her partner Pat
Hudspeth of Cheyenne, WY; 2nd) Stephanie Shiflit, newly of Terlingua;
and 3rd) Herman Everett (last year’s winner), owner of the El Dorado
Hotel and High Sierra Bar and Grill. There were 31 entries this year.
Honorable Mention goes to David Tinsley (all 12 of you!). Close to
$2,000 was raised for Last Minute Low Budget Productions, and what great
helpers they were in pulling this off.
Thank you to the musicians, too many to name here, but high energy music went all
afternoon long. Special guest Tommy X Hancock and Pam Ware had their
Tie-Off, with Pam winning 71-40.
A BIG shout out goes to the
area hotels, restaurants, and outfitters for another successful “Hot
Date Raffle.” And thank you, Deputy Patrick, for being a good sport and
letting us arrest and throw him in the historic Terlingua Ghost Town
Jail. Bail was met promptly and all got to start their new year off with
good luck!

Update from Rio Grande Electric Cooperative, Inc.
"Dan Laws here with a status update. RGEC crews are scattering new poles
and materials along the transmission line where poles are broken. Two
contractor crews will arrive soon to begin setting the new poles. Two
additional crews will arrive this afternoon to assist setting poles and
stringing wire. While all this sounds good, the ground is beginning to
thaw making it difficult for trucks to move up and down the right of
way. Accordingly, we have one dozer on location and another in route to
help pull the trucks through the mud. At this point I am reluctant to
change my predication as to when power will be restored. Although we
have a lot of downed line scattered throughout west Texas, Brewster
County is our number one priority, because of the number of consumers
impacted."

"To all of our members in Brewster County, this is Dan Laws.
Accumulations of ice on the transmission line that serves the county
have become significant enough that the poles and line have begun to
fall. At this point it looks like there are thirty poles on the ground.
The cascade effect began when a truck hit the line on highway 67, just
north of US 90. The line was hanging low due the accumulation of ice.
When the truck snagged the line it started a domino effect and pole
after pole began to fall.
The upshot of this event is that power will not likely be restored until
Monday or Tuesday of next week. We will do everything humanly possible
to shorten that time frame, but conditions are bad. Once the
temperatures warm then we will have mud to contend with."

is an annual event you don't want to miss!
Held on Thursday,
January 1st, 2015,
in the Terlingua Ghostown. Turn in time is 2pm
sharp, on the Terlingua Porch. There's a $5.00 fee per entry. You can
cook on-site or off. We have two rules: 1)Have Fun 2) No Beans! For
a donation of $5.00, you get a bowl, spoon and cornbread, starting at
2pm
(after the peas are turned in to the judges) you can get your
"good luck" dose of peas. There will be an open mike, cake
walk (this is a call out for cakes!), "hot date" raffle, and
a surprise arrest. Proceeds will benefit Last Minute, Low Budget
Productions. This year there will be a special guest Co-host, Tommy X
Hancock. The very first Blackeyed Pea Off was a contest between Pam
Ware, long time local, and Tommy X Hancock, which ended in a tie. We
are, 25 years later, having the tie-breaker contest on the side. The
public will have a chance to vote (for a $1 a vote) between Pot A or
Pot B (you won't know whose is whose). At 4pm
cut-off, we'll settle this once and for all! We would also like to
note that this year's event is dedicated to the memory of David
Tinsley, long time contestant of the Blackeyed Pea Off.Come join us
and start your year out with a fantastic party and get your "good
luck" peas.
There
will be a David Tinsley Memorial Service
at the Ghostown cemetery, 2 pm, Wednesday, Dec. 31 with a gathering
on the porch afterwards.

My name
is Diane Paul, and I live on the Terlingua Ranch as a property owner
for 8 yr. I work out of town, although, I get back and forth each week. I
am conducting a survey, along with some other health care professionals,
for South Brewster County about health care needs in our area, or lack
of. It is a 4 question survey, short and precise, about some of the most
important needs we have regarding available health care. I would like to post an announcement
in the Moon of 2 dates, and times, that I will be at the Cottonwood
Store in Study Butte to personally conduct this survey, as it will end
Jan. 15. I also have placed the survey at 4 local establishments in a
large brown envelope for our communities to get involved. Those places
are; 1. Needful Things Country Store, 2. The American Legion off Hwy
118, 3. General Store at Lajitas, and 4. Terlingua Ranch Office. The
dates I will be at the Cottonwood Store, will be, Jan. 6, on Tues. from
2-6pm, and Jan. 10, from 11am-3pm. My ph. # is 979-218-3769. If you have
any other suggestions in promoting this survey, please let me know.
The
recycling trailer has been emptied and is now accepting more. Thanks
to Todd, Barb, and Liam Bureau, Sue and Dan Carlson, John Calomeni, Sue
and Joe Rife, and the National Park for their help. PLEASE.... no hard
plastic, no batteries of any kind, no plastic sacks, Styrofoam, oil
containers (not even vegetable ones), or spray cans. We had to return
with two large sacks of TRASH.....trash is not recycling. However,
thanks to the rest of you who make our volunteer job easier

calendars featuring the work of local artists are nearly sold out!
There are some calendars left at two venues in town: High Sierra Bar and
Grill and the gift shop in the lobby of Forever Resorts (motor inn).
These calendars make great gifts, and are a wonderful tribute to our
fellow artist Mark Kneeskern, whose life was celebrated this past
weekend by friends and family from near and far. Many thanks go out to
the artists who donated images, and especially to Lauren Stedman for her
design, Ruth Jansyn for her support, and Mindy Hamlett for handling
distribution. Thanks also to George Womack for images of his collection
of Mark's work. Any profit on the sales will be used for promoting local
artists and their work.
The High Sierra will
be open all week, business as usual hours to ensure all visitors and
local residents can get the same great food, drink and other
accommodations as always. We will serve as "Sports Central" through
Sunday with music on Monday, December 29 with Rocky Top Alien Experiment
and on Tuesday, December 30th - Ted Arbogast.

time local Charles Gaushell passed away on Wednesday, December 17th.
Charles was a graduate of LSU, a police detective in Los Angeles during
the 1960's and Chief of Police in Monroe Louisiana. Locally, he drove
shuttles at Far Flung and worked as a jeep tour guide for Ten Bits
Ranch. Most people will remember him for always standing next to the
vulture statue at the end of the bar at La Kiva during happy hour. He
was one of the greatest storytellers this community has ever seen. Our
thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Anne.

On
Tuesday, December 16, The Barton Warnock Center had a truly spectacular
Christmas program thanks to the efforts of this wonderful community.
Due to being short-staffed and not having our usual contingent of
volunteers we felt that we would not be able to have the program at all.
However, Resa Callahan and Glenda Luttrell stepped up and volunteered
to coordinate everything. They worked with the other choir members and
Terlingua CSD staff to put together the program, lined up a Santa Claus,
got donations from the community, put a team of cookie bakers together,
bought all the refreshments, and got flyers printed and posted. They
had lots of help from many people who gave their time and enthusiasm to
“saving Christmas”, and we owe you all a big Thank You!
Special
thanks go to the Cottonwood Store, Harper Hardware in Presidio, Lajitas
Resort, Big Bend Resort and Adventures, Chili Pepper Café, and
Quicksilver Bank for all their contributions! We had a record turnout of
over 150 people. The Community Choir and the Terlingua School
Roadrunner Band put on wonderful performances (thank you Ted!), and
there were memorable and beautiful songs, dances, and readings from many
students and community members. And, GREAT NEWS! Resa and Glenda have
agreed to do it again next year! Thank you all, and Merry Christmas
indeed!

regular font size 9 or 10 and simple font such as Arial, not bold, so as
to make it easier to format for the editor. Also, in an effort to cut
down on the hard copy distribution list, please send us an e-mail at terlinguamoon@gmail.com and let us know if you REALY need us to deliver a hard copy. Remember we are an all volunteer staff.
