Petrichor (PET-rih-kor) : a distinctive, earthy, usually pleasant odor that is associated with rainfall especially when following a warm, dry period and that arises from volatile plant oils released from the soil into the air. (Merriam-Webster) The word was coined by Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Grenfell Thomas in 1964  from Ancient Greek (pétra) 'rock' and (ikhor), the ethereal fluid that is the blood of the gods in Greek mythology. According to MESOWest weather stations, we have had 7.54” of rain in the Chisos Basin so far this year! We have officially surpassed last year’s total accumulated precipitation for 2024 (6.54”) in the Chisos Basin by 1 inch!! Keep doing your rain dances, Terlingua!

RULES OF ENTRY - New

• Each artist may enter up to 3 pieces; a set is considered one piece.
• Artwork must be original, handcrafted by the artist, and consist of at least 75% fired clay.
• Commercial ceramic forms, including slip cast molds, must be adapted, altered, or enhanced in an original artistic manner.
• Artwork must be completed within the last two years.
• Artwork previously exhibited in a BBAC show will not be accepted.
• All artwork must be for sale. BBAC will take a 20% commission on all artwork sold.
• If agreeable to the customer, artwork should remain in the exhibit for the duration of the show,  If not, then “cash and carry” sales will be allowed.  Replacement pieces will be allowed with curators’ approval.
• No artwork will be accepted after the submission date deadline.
• All artwork will be displayed at the curators’ discretion.

We welcome new vendors. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. 

We'll be here all summer, in the shade. This year, we're celebrating the summer season by waiving the set up donation on the last Saturday of each of our summer months. It's a great way for a creator or new vendor to try out our market. We typically have a table and chair or two to loan to new vendors.

July 28, 29 - Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower

 The Delta Aquarids is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by debris left behind by comets Marsden and Kracht. The shower runs annually from July 12 to August 23. It peaks this year on the night of July 28 and morning of July 29. Viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

Protect our dark skies! Turn out the lights at night, use warm colored, downfacing or shielded lights.

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE TERLINGUA MUSIC BASH ‑‑ It’s that time again!  We are getting ready for the 2025 TMB in beautiful downtown Terlingua Ghost Town.  There will be more posted about the music in a bit but for now we are putting out the call to artists and other individuals who may be interested in donating an item or service to this year’s Silent Auction.  The Auction benefits the Mark (eYeBall) Kneeskern Memorial Art Scholarship and is awarded to a graduating senior of Big Bend High School whose primary focus of university/college study will be fine art.  This year’s recipient was Caitlin Staib, and she will be attending Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

 2025 SUMMER SOLSTICE MOON

You may not have noticed, but the exact date and time that the summer solstice occurs, changes year to year. In simple terms, it has to do with how the Gregorian calendar interacts with Earth's orbit relative to the seasonal cycle and its tilt. This year the solstice occurs on June 20th at 9:41 PM CDT. It shifts between June 20th, June 21st, and rarely June 22nd. In Boise, daylight on June 20th will be longer than June 21st by a single second. The next occurrence of a June 22nd solstice isn't until 2203.

 THE BIG BEND AMATEUR RADIO CLUB (BBARC) will hold its annual field day June 28-29 at the Double Diamond pavilion, eight miles south of Alpine on Hwy 118. As in years past, BBARC will participate in national amateur radio exercises from 1 p.m. on Saturday to 1 p.m. on Sunday. This annual event is known as the American Radio Relay League (AARL) Field Day. It was first organized in 1933 by the National Association for Amateur Radio. BBARC has participated in these exercises since the beginning of the club’s formation 50 years ago. These exercises involve participants across North America who establish temporary ham radio stations in public locations or their homes to demonstrate their services and skills to the community. The use of these far reaching radio signals provides essential communication in the service of communities. These exercises highlight ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions and from almost any location, creating an independent and wireless communication network. BBARC Emergency Response Coordinator Bob Ward said, “Hams have a long history of serving our communities when storms or other disasters damage critical communication infrastructure, including cell towers. They function independently from the internet and phone systems, and a station can be set up almost anywhere in minutes.”

 Ward added, “Hams can quickly raise a wire antenna in a tree or on a mast, connect it to a radio and power source, and communicate effectively with others.” The BBARC will set up several radio stations at the Double Diamond pavilion, including one for voice communication, Morse code (CW), and digital operations.

 There will also be a “Get On The Air” (GOTA) station for adult and youth visitors who would like to make radio contacts under the direction of licensed operators. BBARC will also provide teaching and testing for prospective new hams, along with information on getting started and on-site testing at the Field Day site. The public of all ages is invited to attend the BBARC Field Day exercises on Saturday, June 28, between 1:30 p.m. and4 p.m. Visitors will witness hams in action, learn about their activities, and learn how to become ham radio operators.

 Interested parties should look for the Big Bend Amateur Radio banner alongside the road on South Highway 118 and check in at the information welcome desk. Visitors can tour the stations and operations on their own, and a map will be provided, or they can take a guided tour by a BBARC member.

Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items. You'll also be able to enjoy our fabulous local mobile library from 10:00 - 3:00. 

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, all natural lip balms and skin care products, essential oil perfumes, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here. 

We welcome new vendors. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. 

We'll be here all summer, in the shade. This year, we're celebrating the summer season by waiving the set up donation on the last Saturday of each of our summer months. It's a great way for a creator or new vendor to try out our market. We typically have a table and chair or two to loan to new vendors.
