FOOD DISTRIBUTION ‑‑ Family Crisis Center in the Ghost Town, Food Pantry truck will be arriving on Thursday, August 17th. Shout out to volunteers for unloading and packing. Food distribution will be on Friday, August 18th from 10 am to 3:30 pm.
TERLINGUA COMMON SCHOOL DISTRICT ‑‑ the school district is participating in the School Breakfast Program. Please see the announcement letter at the end of this Moon. In addition, more information is available in the attached “SBP Media Release Package 8-10-23” document.
REGISTRATION FOR SCHOOL ‑‑ is currently going on from Monday the 14th through Friday the 18th from 8am-4pm at the high school. Terlingua School Parents, Families, and Friends: PreK-4th school supplies have been donated by The Summit and 5th-8th school supplies have been donated by Billy & Jess Bartko. All of these supplies will be ready to go for the students at school and students in PreK-8th will just need a backpack and lunch box. The list for high school students is on the school’s website under the Parent Resources tab. Go Paisanos and thanks to The Summit and The Bartkos and Vane Palma for helping coordinate this effort.
DETAILS ABOUT THE GHOST TOWN BOOK CLUB ‑‑ there are a few spots left!
We will meet once a month in the Perry Mansion Great Room at 6pm the third Tuesday of each month. The first reading selection is “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. Selections for other meetings will be by member suggestion. Members will receive a Ghost Town Book Club membership card that will allow you 25% off all reading club book selections at the Terlingua Trading Company. Please come by the Trading Company to sign up!

DREAMERS WORKSHOP ‑‑ Are you looking for your dreams? Have you lost your vision? In this desert life, we often get lost in the silence or grow weary of waiting on long-awaited dreams and aspirations that haven't come to pass. With this summer's heat, it's been increasingly difficult to focus on our goals, dreams, and visions.
Ever had a dream you've been waiting on for years just to give up and let those dreams die? I have. It's time to revive your hope, vision, and dreams. Join me in a 3-week workshop on building hope and vision for the future. Awaken the dreamer in you! This gathering is meant to bring a fresh look at your dreams and vision for the future with hands-on participation and speaking our desires to bring our dreams into reality.
Build your dream muscles! This 3-week course will be complete with discussion and sharing; building a visual, tangible guide to reviving the dreams in your life with reflection and encouragement from your neighbors and community.
The workshop is free. It will be a 2-hour session every Monday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm for 3 weeks. All that will be needed is a pair of scissors. All ages are welcome! Let's get together and encourage each other!

SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET ‑‑ Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're there every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.
We welcome new vendors. Come set up in the shade to sell your wares. Flea market items are welcome. After all, a reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that.)
Fresh eggs, local art, handcrafted textiles, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms, hand balms, essential oil perfumes and sugar scrubs, leather goods, handcrafted, creative jewelry, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and up-cycled, and more ‑‑ you never know just what you'll find here. We even had some lovely locally grown produce this past Saturday and another vendor with hand-crafted practical and attractive planters. That vendor expects to be back this Saturday with his planters.
Do you have mad skills and smart, practical talents you'd like to share? We all love to learn about sustainable arts and useful skills here in Terlingua. Let's talk about a workshop.

BIG BEND CITIZENS ALLIANCE ‑‑ The Big Bend Citizens Alliance will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, August 24th at the Red Pattillo Community Center at 6PM. The BBCA is a 501(c)3 public charity supporting the Terlingua Community Garden, Canyon View Community Park, Terlingua Recycles, Voices from Both Sides, Terlingua Visual Arts, Terlingua Dark Sky Alliance, Terlingua Cares, and the South County Library Project. TERLINGUA COMMON SCHOOL DISTRICT ‑ Application Free and Reduced-Price School Meals
Terlingua Common School District announced its policy today for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the attached current income eligibility guidelines. Each school/site or the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by anyone on request.
Starting on August 14, 2023, Terlingua CSD will begin distributing letters to the households of the children in the district about eligibility benefits and any actions households need to take to apply for these benefits. Applications also are available at Terlingua CSD, 550 Roadrunner Circle, Terlingua TX 79852.
Criteria for Free and Reduced-Price Meal Benefits
The following criteria will be used to determine a child’s eligibility for free or reduced-price meal benefits:
Income
1. Household income that is at or below the income eligibility levels
Categorical (Automatic) Eligibility
2. Household receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
Program Participant
3. Child’s status as a foster child, homeless, runaway, migrant, or displaced by a declared disaster
4. Child’s enrollment in Head Start or Even Start
Income Eligibility
For those households that qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on income, an adult in the household must complete an application for free and reduced-price meals and return it to {insert name, title, and contact information}. Those individuals filling out the application will need to provide the following information:
1. Names of all household members
2. Amount, frequency, and source of current income for each household member
3. Last 4 digits of the Social Security number of the adult household member who signs the application or, if the adult does not have a social security number, check the box for “No Social Security number”
4. Signature of an adult household member attesting that the information provided is correct
Categorical or Program Eligibility
Terlingua CSD is working with local agencies to identify all children who are categorically and program eligible. Terlingua CSD will notify the households of these children that they do not need to complete an application. Any household that does not receive a letter and feels it should have should contact Azucena Garcia, SBP Director, 432-371-2281. Any household that wishes to decline benefits should contact Azucena Garcia, SBP Director, 432-371-2281.
Applications may be submitted anytime during the school year. The information provided by households on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility. Applications may also be verified by the school officials at any time during the school year.
Determining Eligibility
Under the provisions of the free and reduced-price meal policy, Azucena Garcia will review applications and determine eligibility. Households or guardians dissatisfied with the Reviewing Official’s eligibility determination may wish to discuss the decision with the Reviewing Official on an informal basis. Households wishing to make a formal appeal for a hearing on the decision may make a request either orally or in writing to Reagan Reed, Superintendent, PO Box 256, Terlingua TX 79852 or call 432-371-2807.
Unexpected Circumstances
If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size increases, the household should contact the school. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for benefits if the household’s income falls at or below the attached current income eligibility guidelines.
In accordance with federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, age, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity. Program information may be made available in languages other than English. Persons with disabilities who require alternative means of communication to obtain program information (e.g., Braille, large print, audiotape, American Sign Language), should contact the responsible state or local agency that administers the program or USDA’s TARGET Center at (202) 720-2600 (voice and TTY) or contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339. To file a program discrimination complaint, a Complainant should complete a Form AD-3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form which can be obtained online at: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/ad-3027.pdf, from any USDA office, by calling (866) 632-9992, or by writing a letter addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. The completed AD-3027 form or letter must be submitted to USDA by: (1) mail: U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights 1400 Independence Avenue, SW Washington, D.C. 20250-9410; or (2) fax: (833) 256-1665 or (202) 690-7442; or (3) email: Program.Intake@usda.gov.
