TERLINGUA SCHOOL FIRE – as most of you already know, the band/robotics room burned Thursday night.  A neighbor notified Terlingua Fire and EMS, who responded along with Brewster County deputies and the National Park Service.  Crews were able to contain the fire and prevented it from spreading to the library and elementary buildings.  All employees that live on campus and the first responders are safe.  However, all items belonging to the BBHS Band, the Purobots robotics team and Bradley Anthenat, who is in charge of IT/Band/Motor/Robotics, were lost in the fire.
               Meetings with the Fire Marshall and insurance adjusters are scheduled this week.  Information on fundraising for students and Mr. Anthenat will be coming soon.  Stay tuned to the Moon for more information.

UPDATE:  This Saturday in The Community Garden at The Market, We will be collecting donations in Jeff's memory to help the students at The Terlingua School replace instruments that were lost in the fire that destroyed the Band and Robotics building last week. We are doing this instead of a memorial scholarship fund.

MARATHON'S FIRST MARID GRAS ‑‑ Put Tuesday afternoon on your calendar.  This is a time for locals to have a parade, a picnic, music and other activities.  Just for fun.  No charge, no judges.  Let's just get together, share food and music, and make memories.  Anyone is welcome.  Bet a few tourists and a bunch of people from south county would make it rock.

TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE AND FIRST ANNUAL UGLY FEET CONTEST ‑‑ Thursday, March 2 @ 5:30 pm.  Come celebrate the 187th anniversary of Texas Independence from Mexico with the annual impromptu parade, beginning and ending at the Ghosttown Porch, celebrating the sacrifices of those who won our freedom that has been so easily forgotten by native Texans and unknown by the naturalized and visitors.  The parade is scheduled to begin around 5:30 pm (but is notoriously late) at the Porch.  The route for the parade this year is tentatively scheduled to include the entire Loop of Ghosttown Road, including FM 170, pending approval.  Stay tuned.  Gathering for the parade will be at any time necessary for the preparation of your "float" to make the 5:30 start.  ALL FLOATS AND UGLY FEET WELCOME.  The Ugly Feet contest will take place on the Ghosttown porch right after the parade, FEATURING MUSIC BY THE MOONSHINERS.  Please try to attend with a float and enter your ugly feet into the contest, or just come as a spectator and spread the word.  Please don't be shy about entering your UGLY FEET.  Be proud of your ugly feet!  Terlingua is notorious for our ugly feet.  Don't let the tourists beat you because the entire planet is eligible to enter.

TERLINGUA BOTTOMS GROUP OF AA ‑‑ meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

TERLINGUA DOUBLE A BAR GROUP ‑‑ will hold AA meetings on Tuesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm at the Crisis Center in the Ghosttown.

SCHOOL OF CONSTRUCTIVE ARTS SPRING WORKSHOPS ‑‑ The School of Constructive Arts is hosting two earth building workshops taught by master earth builder Jim Hallock this spring!
               Workshop 1 - BABS ("Build A Brick Sh*thouse") - March 12th-18^th.  Participants will receive an introduction to soil testing and earth block production and construction while assisting in the ground-up construction of an earth block building and learning about off-grid waste management.
               Workshop 2 - Earthen Vaults - April 15th-16^th.  Participants will receive the same introduction to soil testing and earth block and study earthen roofs, arches, vaults, and domes while participating in the construction of a 14-foot span barrel vault roof.

CATCH TERLINGUA BURLESQUE ‑‑ at the 5^th annual Glenn Felts Memorial Alien Abduction Party, February 24th at the Goat Pens.  We hit the stage at 8pm.  Costume contest during intermission so bring out your best outfits!!  Let's get weird!!

PAISANO POST FROM TERLINGUA CSD
Congratulations to the Terlingua CSD robotics team Purobots! They traveled to El Paso last weekend and competed against 20 teams. They ended the regular season in 7th place. The judges were impressed with their robot design, sportsmanship and gracious professionalism. The judges nominated them for two awards. The Innovate (2nd place) and Inspire awards (3rd place). Because of the Inspire award nomination they advanced to the Regionals in Lubbock, TX. Congratulations Purobots! Good luck to Mr. Brad Anthenat and his team including: Giselle, Ethan, Severino, Laila, Romina, Luna, Rigo, Brooke, Evan, and Jennyfer.

PARADE ON THURSDAY, MARCH 2

Come celebrate the 187th anniversary of Texas Independence from Mexico with the annual impromptu parade between the Porch and the High Sierra celebrating the sacrifices of those who won our freedom that has been so easily forgotten by native Texans and unknown by the naturalized and visitors. The parade is scheduled to begin around 5:30 P.M. (but is notoriously late) at the Porch.  The route will leave for the High Sierra, then turn around back to the Porch.  Gathering for the parade will be at any time necessary for the preparation of your "float" to make the 5:30 start.  Please try to attend with a float or just as a spectator.  More to follow…..

Starting Sunday, January 29 at 8 PM CST the interior of Big Bend Ranch State Park (including Sauceda Ranger Station) will be closed to the public for a drawn hunt and will reopen Friday, February 3 at 8 AM CST. The River Corridor (FM 170 - River Road) will remain open along with Barton Warnock Visitor Center and Fort Leaton State Historic Site.

Terlingua CSD will begin checking out library books from our catalog for children or adults in the community. Library books will be reserved online and then available for pick up at the administrative office every Friday. The Terlingua WORD-OFF is back! 
The WORD - OFF is an opportunity to read or perform original works of prose and poetry. The time limit is 5 minutes and will be indiscriminately enforced by the moderators. This year’s theme is CLIMBING MOUNTAINS. 
As always, if you have something to share that is inspired by, kinda comes close to or has absolutely nothing to do with the theme, we would love you to share it.

6pm sign-up, 7pm words.
The Word-Off is a safe space for folks to read or perform their original prose and poetry. Folks feel more comfortable if they know they are not being recorded, so we ask that you turn off your phones and put them away for the duration of the event.
We’d also like to remind folks that it takes a lot of guts to get up there and read, and we’ll ask the audience to honor the participants with your full attention.

• Judging Results will be at 4:20, with awards to follow

Terlingua Ghostown Church-Santa Inez
The Big Bend Episcopal Mission will celebrate a bilingual Holy Eucharist on February 8th, Wednesday, at 5:30pm with Reverend Katie and Father Mike. All are welcome. Prayer books in English and Spanish. 

The Community Garden  This Saturday Feb 4th. 
 Bob from The School of Constructive Arts is the demonstrator at this Saturday's market starting at 11am at The Boathouse. He will discuss the school's mission, history, and next steps. He will talk about regenerative design and building of which earth building is one aspect. The hands on portion of workshop will be back in the garden under the market building in the shade. He will demonstrate how to field test soils and have a mini block press that we can use to make miniature earth blocks testing different soil mixes. People can take these home after the workshop. We are very excited to have these folks back and sharing their knowledge.

Ruth Elizabeth Oakes, age 83 of Monticello, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2023. Ruth was born in Sand Gap, Kentucky on June 25, 1939 to Harold Day and Roberta (Elliot) Day.  Ruth welcomed everyone in her home, her greatest joy was her family. She also enjoyed riding on the motorcycle with her husband, as well as boating with her husband and family on Lake Cumberland. 
Ruth is survived by her children, Randy (Sandy) Oakes, Chuck (Carolyn) Oakes, Becky (Gary) Plessinger, and Cindy (Tom) Dunn; his grandchildren, Tiffany, John Randall, Danny, Josh, Jessie, and Sarah; her great-grandchildren, Ryder, Jenna, Parker, Tucker, Tanner, Joshua, Maddi, Logan, Easton, Eden, Grace, Cason, Tate, and Abby and many other family members and friends. 
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles E. Oakes; her son, Douglas Oakes; her siblings, Joan Winkler, Eadie Spivey, Billie Phelps.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Brown Dawson Flick Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be held at Brown Dawson Flick Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Ave, Hamilton, Ohio, on Wednesday, February  1, 2023 at 11:00 AM with her daughter Cindy Dunn, officiating.  Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Cumberland.

The submission window is now open for Big Bend Literary Magazine's Issue Six themed “Creation”. The desert is always creating, even in dormancy, inspiring us to create and re-create ourselves. "Power In Prayer"      Communities, churches, schools, countries, family, friends, world, etc, etc....all need prayer!!. Big Bend Church will be keeping its doors open the first Sunday of each month for anyone wanting to come pray from 1-4pm..  Feb. 5th is the next time...  Anyone is welcome as we come and go, praying for so much and so many!!  

Temporary Closures to Protect Nesting Falcons

The Terlingua Word-Off is a long standing event celebrating local talent reading or performing original prose or poetry. There is a 5 minute time limit. Some of it is funny, some of it is sad, some of it is terrible and some of it is brilliant. All of it is welcome.

Johnson’s Ranch Presentation at the Cinnabar Theatre January 28th 7:30PM   
Through the focal point of the only documented aircraft crash at the ranch in 1932, the slide presentation will focus on the unique personal, cultural, and military aviation histories associated with a truly storied place, now but a remote marker and campsite on the River Road in the National Park. A forgotten photograph of a curious metal assembly found walking the area 17 years ago, leads to a search and rediscovery of the part, and the subsequent tying of it to the specific aircraft and crash. The story of the pilot, who later went on to be a German POW and a Brigadier General in the Air Force, helps illuminate a fascinating tale of survival, perseverance, innovation, and satisfaction in a pivotal era of the Lower Big Bend. The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem

Inspired by the awesome scale and rugged topography of Big Bend National Park, which was recognized by National Geographic as one of its “Best of the World” for 2023 among the 25 Most Extraordinary Places and Communities - see NatGeo.com/BestOfTheWorld - her newest series of manipulated photographs highlights distinctive features this region of far west Texas is known for.
Her goal with this and others in the series is to suggest that the viewer look through different eyes to see the landscape from the perspective of a natural mystic (like her).  The medium and style choice came out of the way that manipulating photography often highlights or brings to the surface atmospheric details and shadows that otherwise tend to take a back seat to the main subjects. In her direct experience of phenomenological events she would describe as 'mystical' if not 'paranormal,' she often perceives the life of a place in the atmosphere created by that force which animates it.
